Chapter 40: Finding a House
A Kryptonian who traveled to a new world had originally thought his standard for finding a house was having no standard at all; as long as he could live there, it would do. But in reality, when he looked seriously, every single house had flaws that Henry could not tolerate to some degree.
One could also say that if these houses did not have these flaws, these seemingly well-conditioned houses would not have fallen into Fabio's hands.
In the circle of Los Angeles rental agents, he could only be considered lower-middle class. It was very suitable for young people who had nothing and came to Hollywood to chase their star dreams.
However, someone like Henry, who had a small fortune and, due to the secrets on his person, feared bringing unnecessary trouble. So while he said on his lips that he was not picky, in reality, wherever he looked, there were flaws everywhere. It had quite the flavor of the future generation of little fairies choosing mates.
Fortunately, Fabio had seen all kinds of people; to make money, running around more was normal. For the next two or three days, he simply took Henry and ran through every listing their company had, as long as Henry took a liking to it.
In the end, Henry picked an apartment building near a Portuguese-speaking neighborhood. Although it was not some high-end community, at least the neighboring streets had no street-walking prostitutes or silver sellers.
However, with the gathering of ethnic minorities, for outsiders, the security could only be considered passable. Unless one was of the same ethnicity oneself, under mutual care, the security level was invisibly raised by a large chunk.
The owner lived on the first floor and personally managed the entire apartment building. When new tenants came, they all had to let him take a look. If the owner was not satisfied, even if the renter wanted to rent, there was no way.
Although the apartment building was near a Portuguese-speaking neighborhood, the owner was not an immigrant from Brazil, but a family that had lived here since Hollywood first rose.
It was just that the family line was dwindling; by the owner's generation, he was left alone living by himself. He had a divorced wife, and the children were given to his mother.
To him, those immigrants were the outsiders. So he did not limit the house to be rented only to a certain ethnic group, or to people of any specific profession.
It just had to be that he found them 'pleasant to the eye'.
At first, when listening to Fabio's introduction, Henry thought this was some difficult character. But when he arrived and saw him, it was a bald little old man, full of effeminacy, wearing lipstick and eye shadow.
... He fully understood the reason his son wanted to go with the old lady.
My Kryptonian iron fist is itching again. So it turns out this isn't the owner picking tenants, but whether the tenants can endure the natural selection from the owner.
"Gary, I'm here." The Italian warmly embraced the bald owner.
The little old man glanced at Henry flirtatiously, making the visitor stare in shock and doubt his life.
"Another young person has come to this land of dreams. What kind of person are you? Chasing a star dream? Wanting to fulfill an American Dream? Or coming to a big city to find opportunities?" the little old man asked, full of flamboyance.
Although he was always ready, if the other party dared to attempt a cheek dance, the righteous Kryptonian iron fist could strike at any moment.
However, little old man Gary had very clear boundaries, and there was no feeling of delight at the sight of prey in his eyes. One could say that his appearance was just because he liked it himself, not because he wanted to hook up with anyone.
To put it another way, Gary was like someone who liked to play Cosplay, but he had no specific person to dress up as.
Besides, although visual rock bands originated in that corrupt country of England, the United States was also deeply influenced. Dressing up as demons and monsters was already acceptable; who stipulated one couldn't dress up as a flirtatious woman...
In short, old Gary had quite the feeling of completely letting himself go after his wife left and his children scattered. Although Henry still did not know whether the divorce from his wife was the cause or the result.
Since the other party asked, Henry certainly would not be so rude as not to respond. He said: "Mainly to see what a big city looks like, so I'll try a bit of everything. If I feel disappointed, I'll go back to Alaska."
This was the truth. Henry had no thought of necessarily living a life of indulgence in a big city.
After all, this was the Marvel Universe with mutants and Captain America.
And according to Old John's words, he had tried to join the Howling Commandos but didn't pass the threshold. So it was reasonable to suspect that the werewolves, vampires, Frankenstein's monsters, and mummies of the Howling Commandos were all real.
Who knew if there weren't more terrible things in there. Since my Kryptonian physique, which can transform by absorbing yellow sunlight, already existed, it wouldn't be surprising if a Bruce Wayne without parents popped out somewhere.
If that time truly came, Henry would cat back to Alaska. Relying on his Kryptonian dog eyes to pan for gold, living a life of truly picking up money, there was no way he could starve to death.
"Hmm, Alaska." Gary walked around Henry in a circle, looking as if he was critiquing him. He suddenly asked: "Are you someone from the West?"
The red empire in the West is in chaos right now. Those who could run naturally chose to run; even running into the home of an old enemy wasn't much.
If one really had to say it, he himself could be tied to the red empire a bit. But the matters in between were really hard to clarify; at least Henry did not want to expose the fact that he was actually an alien in this world. So he shook his head and said: "Just Alaska."
"Alright, just Alaska, Mr. If you intend to rent a house, come up and take a look." Gary stopped insisting on asking, directly picked up the large bunch of keys at his waist, opened the door to the first-floor stairwell, and immediately walked in.
The Italian was also behind, made a 'please' gesture, inviting Henry. At the same time he said: "Rest assured, Mr. Gary is very friendly. Just his habits are a bit special."
Do you know that before I transmigrated, I witnessed the divine power of Thunder King Lei Dian rooting out all bad habits. Based on the principle that if you don't correct them, you remain disabled. Anyway, as long as you are electrocuted into cerebral palsy, you can't do any bad habits anymore, right?
So Henry shrugged and said: "As long as you don't force me to do one thing, I won't have any discrimination." I am not Thunder King Lei Dian, but sending people to the afterlife is my profession.
Moreover, what Henry said was also the truth. Compared to the future America where weirdos were everywhere and political correctness came first, the mental patients of this era were much milder.
The house provided by old Gary was a corner room on the third floor of the apartment, with windows on two sides, not big, but the advantage was that all basic equipment was complete. Like a kitchen, refrigerator, bed, wardrobe, bookshelf, desk, there was also a bathroom and a washing machine.
All the furniture looked very neat and clean, showing the care of the resident or manager. It was a state where one could just bring a bag and move in.
Old Gary stood by the door and said: "The conditions here, I believe Fabio has already told you. I will emphasize the important ones again: no pets allowed. You can gather with friends, but noisy parties with music banging are not welcome.
"Whether you are high or not, I don't care. But if you dare to get crazy on drugs in my apartment and look for trouble everywhere, then I guarantee I will kick you out to sleep on the street. Do you understand?"
"That is very reasonable, I have no objection."
