Chapter 62: Hometown Dishes
As for the chef's question, Henry, this extra, naturally had no answer either.
Adhering to the principle of "since we are here, let us be at peace," Henry said, "Who cares? As long as everyone eats to their satisfaction, your mission is accomplished. Besides, haven't you already found the secret to success?"
The two looked together at the freshly replenished donut buffet, salad bar, and high-end coffee machine; the diligent American people were just that easy to fool.
If they actually tried molecular gastronomy or mushroom and clam soup, would they believe the customers would flip the tables on the spot? Truly, a wild boar cannot appreciate fine rice.
However, looking at that perfunctory buffet, even during normal dining hours when the variety would be richer, Old Black still asked with some guilt:
"Do you think I should make some changes? If the boss who hired me sees this, will he think I'm not diligent enough? In other words, this job is actually a test."
Henry spoke the blunt truth: "No matter how good the food is, if you make a huge platter of it for people to take freely, and then let everyone choose freely, eating whatever they want, once you do that, even if you use top-tier ingredients, that plastic-like cheapness cannot be removed."
"So, do you have any ideas?"
In these days, the only one who could chat a few words with Old Black about cooking, without commercial flattery, was Henry, this extra.
Whether one truly understood food or just followed the crowd, Old Black, as a chef, could certainly tell. That was why, at this moment, he asked for Henry's sharp thoughts.
"Perhaps... you could try your hometown dishes. Because I think those French, Italian, and Spanish dishes, the truly wealthy must be tired of them by now."
"What hometown dishes could I have?" Old Black was not Chinese, so he didn't have that much nostalgia for hometown dishes. He chattered on, saying, "Do you want to see roasted bananas, boiled bananas, dried bananas, banana platters, banana mush, and banana soup here?"
Henry frowned and asked, "Why is it all bananas?"
"Hey, bananas are the staple food of my hometown. Just like Asians eat rice, and Europeans and Americans eat bread. Do you want to know more ways to cook bananas? Now that you mention it, my inspiration has come back."
"Oh, God, spare me. Your face gives me the feeling that I will be immediately drowned by bananas."
"Not eating bananas is fine too; a very special dish is popular in my hometown, roasted lion." Old Black said, pretending to be mysterious.
This mention made the stunned Henry widen his eyes. He said, "You guys play so wildly; you can even roast lions!"
"Yes, this is a traditional dish of our hometown. Every time, we send three to four hunters to hunt lions. —"
"Wait a minute." Henry interrupted Old Black's words and asked, "Since it's called a traditional dish, what weapons do you use?"
"Just spears. You can't use guns. Using guns changes the taste."
"So? Using only spears, three or four people, can you hunt a lion? Your hunting skills are very impressive."
Old Black hummed twice and said proudly, "Because once a lion is full, its aggression and mobility decrease. At that time, the remaining one person can kill the lion and bring it back to the village to roast."
"Woo, wa~ah! Your village plays so wildly." Henry was in shock.
"This is the fairest selection method when many warriors want to marry the chief's daughter, because usually only one returns. Who can say a warrior capable of hunting a lion is not qualified to marry the chief's daughter?"
Henry shook his head and sighed. "Wa~woo, this is truly unimaginable. This dish has already surpassed the level of being delicious or not delicious."
Old Black, who had been speaking with a serious face, suddenly showed a happy expression; his two rows of big teeth were particularly white and bright, and he laughed heartily, saying, "Haha, I fooled you, didn't I?"
"You... Oh~, it's a joke, right?" Henry raised his hands in a surrendering pose and said, "You are amazing, Chef, you are really amazing. You really fooled me; I was about to think you guys hunted lions so wildly."
The two did a fist bump. Old Black, full of pride, said, "Maybe I wasn't lying. This was heard from my grandfather. My grandfather said he heard it from his grandfather."
"But you know, there is no written history, only oral tradition. Who knows which things are just those old folks bragging, wanting to gain their grandsons' that... um, how do you say it?"
"Clear and foolish eyes of admiration?"
"Yes! That's clear and foolish eyes of admiration. Don't people who want to be big stars especially like having people look at them with such eyes? Just like my elders; they can't fool my lord, so they can only fool children."
"Who knows?" With three strokes and five chops, Henry finished everything he had taken and also drank a large glass of soda water.
Because this was a film set and belonged to working hours, the restaurant did not provide alcoholic beverages. Otherwise, seeing a group of actors and crew members filming while drunk, wouldn't the producer explode?
Don't even talk about the producer getting drunk too. When seeing the financial ledger, even if drunk, he would explode on the spot.
Suddenly, Henry's ears twitched, then he quickly cleared the table, putting the plates and cutlery onto the return counter. He said, "Oh, I should go check the filming location. Maybe they are preparing to start shooting again."
"Go ahead, go ahead." Old Black naturally knew that people here prioritized filming and wouldn't force anyone to stay.
What Henry said was, of course, not nonsense. Under the attention of his super hearing, the assistant director in charge of extras had started gathering the actors who had been dismissed earlier to prepare for training for the next shot.
In a film crew, most extras are handled by several action teams. Their method is very simple: send one person who often follows the assistant director, or is stationed at the filming site.
As soon as the shooting team needs people, they can find all the members of their own team in the fastest time.
But there is a problem here: Henry does not belong to any action team. So when they call for people, they won't casually call Henry to gather together.
This cannot be blamed on them, because this is simply not anyone else's responsibility. Although requiring actors to be on standby at all times is somewhat unreasonable, isn't it even more absurd if actors are not present when shooting is needed?
And this is Henry's current situation. Although he was not specifically targeted, he was subtly ostracized.
However, this ostracism was not malicious; it was just that others had no obligation to do anything for him, so Henry could only find a way himself.
After all, he was not part of anyone's team. Henry hadn't thought about integrating into any clique.
Fortunately, the Kryptonian ability, super hearing, could solve such small problems.
As long as Henry made his behavior and actions look natural, and if luck was good, he just happened to wander back without delaying the shooting time, then no one would trouble him. Why not?
