Chapter 94

~7 min read 1,329 words

Nightcrawler Kurt Wagner followed Storm Ororo Munroe, walking on the streets of New York City.

Except for a head of white hair, Ororo didn't have many striking mutant features. So she just wore casual clothes, like an ordinary girl, tying her hair up with a rubber band so it wouldn't fly around.

But Kurt's mutant features were quite obvious. That tail was barely hideable, and the blue skin and blue fur on his body couldn't be hidden no matter what.

So Kurt could only miserably wear a trench coat and a wide-brimmed gentleman's hat in the hot sun. He also lowered the brim of his hat, trying his best to cover his face.

This world seems to accept mutants. But the thoughts in the hearts of ordinary people, and the subtle gazes that mutants feel when walking on the street, all show that this "acceptance" is just a temporary attitude, not a heartfelt thought.

So Kurt still wasn't used to walking on the street, becoming an object for everyone to point at. This made him feel like a monkey in a zoo.

However, the place Ororo was taking him to, Kurt hadn't been to, and it was said that the place didn't welcome mutants using their abilities to invade. So walking there on two legs was the safest way.

The destination was in the downtown area of Manhattan, at a Y-shaped intersection. The place Ororo was going to was a triangular hotel at the intersection of the two roads.

The bellboy at the door wore a uniform with a red background and yellow lines, and was a Black man.

But when Ororo walked past and he tipped his hat to salute, Kurt noticed that there were shark-like gill marks on the bellboy's head; his eyes suddenly turned completely black, and then immediately returned to normal. It seemed he was also a mutant.

Walking into the hotel, there were a few people sitting scattered in the lobby. Some were reading newspapers, some were resting with their eyes closed, and one was drinking coffee while disassembling and cleaning his firearm.

Ororo walked to the front desk and directly placed a special gold coin on the table.

The Black concierge responsible for reception, who was also the lobby manager Charon, looked up, and only after seeing clearly who it was did he show a polite smile, saying: "Ms. Munroe, long time no see. I don't know what I can do for you?"

"When there is news of Jean Grey's whereabouts, notify us. You should know where to call, right?"

Pressing the gold coin with two fingers together, she moved it gently toward her direction. Charon said: "It's an honor to serve you. I don't know if you know, this morning Ms. Grey appeared on Genosha Island, and after defeating a special US military dispatch team, she disappeared."

Ororo frowned and said: "News that can't find the person doesn't count, you understand, right?"

"Of course, I know your commission very well. That news just now counts as a gift," Charon said politely, smiling without showing his teeth.

Seeing that the commission was successfully issued, Storm was about to leave. Charon called out to stop her, saying: "Ms. Munroe. We have quite a few jobs here that are suitable for you, have you considered making some extra money?" Saying that, he took out a stack of papers from under the counter.

Ororo, who had stopped, looked back and said: "The things on my hands are more urgent, I'll come over after solving them. You guys aren't in a hurry, right?"

"Of course not in a hurry." Putting the commission letter back under the counter, Charon showed his big white teeth and smiled this time: "Then I'll wait for your arrival at any time."

The moment Kurt followed Ororo out of the door, Kurt, who hadn't dared to breathe, finally let out a long sigh. He asked: "Ororo, what kind of place is this? I feel like it's very dangerous inside."

"The Continental Hotel. Don't come here to make trouble, the Professor's face isn't very useful either. But it's enough for me to be responsible for the contact here. It's just because it's on the way, so I came here first. The place I need your help with is another location."

"Where are we going?" Kurt asked.

Ororo looked left and right and said: "Let's find a subway entrance first."

Whether it was the gain brought by the teleportation ability, or the talent in this regard itself, Nightcrawler Kurt Wagner was quite sensitive to places he had been to, and his sense of direction was even more so. So he pointed out the direction of the nearest subway entrance and took Ororo over.

The reason for not using teleportation was to avoid scaring the ordinary people around. This was also Professor X's requirement for him; the teleportation ability is only used when necessary, or when no one around can see it.

And the New York subway is quite busy at any time. Thanks to being New Yorkers, most people are lowering their heads, stepping with hurried steps, and won't pay attention to the people around them for even a second.

This is also the reason why two mutants walked around them and no one cared. Perhaps if a Black madman came somewhere and shouted on the subway that there was an alien bug biting the carriage at the end of the train, everyone could still sit calmly.

Looking at the gate blocking people, Ororo had the impulse to jump the gate and escape the fare like other young people. But with Kurt, she was embarrassed to do so.

And she couldn't teleport to a place she hadn't been to and couldn't see, so Ororo bought the cheapest tickets for both of them to enter the station.

Kurt, who had never taken such a crowded subway, thought he would have a meal. Unexpectedly, just as he was about to catch the train before the doors closed, he was pulled by Ororo, standing on the platform, watching the subway leave.

"Um, it's gone. Aren't we getting on the train?" Kurt asked.

Ororo shook her head and said: "Not getting on. We go this way."

Because a subway train had just left, the passengers on the platform were quite sparse. Ororo led Kurt, jumped off the platform, and walked along the tracks.

Walking a short distance, they turned into the abandoned line of the subway.

As a world-class metropolis, the degree of underground development in New York is unimaginable to ordinary people. What is complex and complicated is not only the subway lines, but also sewage systems such as sewers.

There are those in use, those half-developed, those abandoned, and even some unknown organizations secretly digging. It can be said that no one has the ability to completely grasp the entire situation of New York's underground world, and this also gives some people a little convenience.

Compared to the street sleepers that can be seen on the street, there are many more wanderers wandering in New York's underground world, and life is even more difficult. As long as you fall to this place, there is no decent character.

This is a range that police and official forces cannot manage, and it has its own set of hidden order running, silently resisting the dark side from vampires, werewolves, and other non-humans... or bearing their exploitation.

Kurt, who originally followed his Gypsy foster mother in his hometown in Europe, was deceived to Germany and once had to fall into a place similar to this.

It was only when he was forced to conduct a life-and-death cage fight between mutants for the first time in Berlin that he was rescued by Mystique. Because of this, he joined the Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters and became a member of the X-Men.

So Kurt is lucky, he didn't get familiar with this underground world, until today he was brought in by Ororo again.
