Chapter 340. Why decimate a pregnant woman (Part 4)

~7 min read 1,346 words

The next day, the rain had stopped.

The sky was a murky grey, and the autumn wind carried a piercing chill.

Except for Li Shaohui, who had overslept, everyone else had gathered in the dining room for breakfast.

The Li family patriarch sat at the head of the table, reading the newspaper while he ate. The rest of the family bowed their heads and ate without much conversation.

It wasn’t until the patriarch had finished his meal and left the table that the others dared to get up.

Upon entering the living room and seeing the figure seated on the sofa, everyone was surprised.

"Mohan, how come you’re here so early? Have you had breakfast? Shall I have the kitchen prepare something more for you?" the patriarch asked.

Li Mochan’s brows and eyes were downcast, the corners of his eyes slightly lifted, icy and frosted.

"No need, I’ve already eaten."

"Uncle Five."

"Uncle Five."

Beside him, Li Jingjie and the others didn’t dare to be presumptuous, and called out in a well-behaved manner.

There was nothing they could do, they had grown up in the shadow of their Uncle Five.

"Mohan, did something happen for you to come back like this all of a sudden?" The patriarch was shrewd; he knew his son well to some extent.

This rascal didn’t come without reason; him coming back so early definitely meant something was up.

"Dad." Li Jingjie turned his gaze and saw Li Shaohui coming downstairs, greeted him warmly.

Li Shaohui’s expression changed slightly at the sight of the person sitting on the sofa, the discomfort from the hangover was instantly dispersed, and he became completely sober.

He stepped down the last stair, with a gentle smile, as if last night’s events at the VI Club had never happened, "Mohan, why are you here so early?"

Li Mochan’s eyelids lifted, his ink-black eyes cold and solitary, revealing no hint of emotion in the depths of his profound gaze.

Ignoring Li Shaohui’s pleasantries, his gaze remained on the patriarch, "Father, there’s something I need to talk to you about."

For so many years, it was the first time Li Mochan spoke to him with such seriousness, which indeed made the patriarch feel somewhat flattered.

"What is it?"

"I want all the rights to operate the properties under the Li family’s name that are in Shaohui’s hands," Li Mochan said straightforwardly.

As soon as he spoke, it was like a "King Bomb" had been dropped.

Such a righteous demand was truly unique in this world.

Everyone was startled, their eyes filled with disbelief as they looked at Li Mochan.

Across from him, Li Shaohui’s face turned awkward, his hand gripping his suit jacket tightly.

"Mohan, what are you talking about?" the expression of the patriarch was inscrutable, his hoarse voice carrying a hint of astonishment.

He had tried everything to give him the Li family’s property in the past, but it was all rejected outright; now he was saying he wanted Shaohui’s share, there must be something odd going on.

"All the things Shaohui has gotten from the Li family, I want them," Li Mochan repeated with rare patience, slightly slowing his speech.

"Mohan, making jokes about this early in the morning isn’t very nice. There are some things you can’t say carelessly," Weng Lan’s expression was a bit stiff as she regained her voice, "Did you have some sort of conflict with your elder brother? We’re all family, we can talk things out nicely, no need to make the atmosphere so tense."

"My mother only gave birth to me," Li Mochan spoke indifferently, his tone quite stifling.

His implication was clear; he had no elder brother, and he did not want to be lumped in with Li Shaohui.

"Mohan, what has actually happened? Did Shaohui do something to upset you?" the patriarch glanced at the silent Li Shaohui, then looked back at Li Mochan and asked carefully.

"Dad, the recent hits to the Li Family’s assets were all Mohan’s doing," Li Shaohui preempted, sensing that the old man was about to favor Mohan again.

The old master of the Li Family was already bothered by this matter, and when he heard Li Shaohui’s words, his face suddenly turned cold, "Mohan, is what Shaohui says true? Did you really do it?"

The others listened as they spoke in riddles. Only Li Jingjie, in the know, understood the recent frequency of contract breaches and stolen partners from the Li Group, leading to substantial losses.

If this was the doing of his Fifth Uncle, it would indeed have outsiders laughing till the Li Family’s face turned yellow with humiliation.

A house divided falls hard, and the beneficiaries were naturally others.

"That’s right, I did it." His cool voice was nonchalant, without any sense that what he had done had brought great loss to the Li Family.

"You ungrateful brat, why on earth did you do such a thing? Don’t forget, you also carry the Li name," the old master slammed his fist onto the table, his beard bristling and eyes bulging with anger.

He had been firmly convinced that it wasn’t his doing, but here he was, having stabbed the Li family in the back.

"Take back everything Li Shaohui got from you; otherwise, I will destroy it all, even if it means the end of the Li Family," Mohan said, meeting the old master’s angry gaze with an assertive tone.

He wanted the old master to personally retract everything given to Li Shaohui; he wanted Li Shaohui to watch, as the father he’d worked so hard to please took away everything he had been given.

"Mohan, how have I ever wronged you? Why must you be so ruthless toward me?" Li Shaohui was afraid the old master might impulsively heed Mohan’s words and asked angrily.

"Heh—"

A cold laugh escaped his lips, tinged with a touch of contempt.

"Then you tell me, my mother never wronged you, so why did you have to be so ruthless toward a pregnant woman?" Mohan’s eyes and brows chilled, his crimson lips curving into a bloodthirsty, cold smirk.

Before the words even fell, the tense atmosphere seemed poised to erupt.

Around them, utter silence descended.

Li Shaohui’s breath hitched, his mind a maelstrom of emotions.

Had he found out about what happened back then?

How could he have? He had made sure to deal with everyone who knew back then, how could Mohan have possibly found out?

Maybe this was just a bluff from Mohan to threaten him.

In an unnoticed corner, standing at the very back, Fang Hui’s eyes revealed an unnerving depth, and her palms began to sweat involuntarily.

"Mohan, what do you mean by that?" the old master knew Mohan wouldn’t accuse someone for no reason, and also knew he had no regard for the Li Family’s wealth.

Now that he was suddenly taking such a stance, there had to be a reason behind it, and Jiang Qian’s death must have been more than just a difficult birth.

Mohan shifted his gaze to Fang Hui, his voice ice cold, "Regarding this matter, I think you should also have a say."

Facing Mohan’s gloomy cold gaze, Fang Hui panicked, her lightly made-up face quickly draining of color.

"I...I..."

Everyone turned their gaze toward Fang Hui, even more confused.

Mohan spoke calmly and steadily, "One minute, if you don’t speak up, you will take the consequences."

"What do you know? Spit it out!" the old master glared fiercely at Fang Hui, his voice a severe bark.

"I, I know nothing at all," Fang Hui’s eyes dodged theirs, and her lips quivered as she spoke.

She couldn’t drag Shaohui down; as long as they firmly denied everything, with so many years passed since the incident, Mohan had no evidence to prove they were to blame.

Mohan scoffed coldly, picked up the folder lying beside him, and casually threw it onto the table.

His cold gaze swept over Weng Lan, "Open it and see."

Weng Lan suddenly froze, puzzled by the game Mohan was playing.
