Chapter 493, Urging the baby (first update)
The warm sun was resplendent, yet it imbued no warmth.
Snow in the courtyard lay fluffy and thick like a blanket, with the crisscrossed tracks of car tires deeply etched into it.
Bursts of laughter echoed through the living room.
"This is fantastic, Ahan has finally tied the knot with Xiaojiu." Holding two marriage certificates, Old Madam Jiang’s smile was so wide she could hardly close her mouth.
"I’ve finally lived to see this day."
Jiang Hai and Veya huddled to her left and right, staring at the marriage certificates as if they had never seen such things before, altogether too fascinated.
"Jiuliang, you two really rushed through this big event quietly," Feng Yi said, giving a thumbs-up to the nettlesome couple sitting together across from him.
"Exactly, you left early in the morning so quietly, we thought you were just going out on a date," Jiang Yisheng teased in addition.
Ye Jiuliang leaned against Li Mochan, arching an eyebrow, "Don’t forget the gift money."
With that said, she added, "I want a big red envelope. If it’s too little, you’ll have to deal with it yourselves."
"Hahaha."
Laughter intermingled, indiscernible as to who was laughing.
Feng Yi rolled his eyes at her, wondering who else would threaten people over gift money.
Could her cheek get any thicker?
Ji Mingqian couldn’t help but admire them; marrying with such casualness was unique to just this pair.
"Looks like there’s hope for my little grandchild now," Old Madam Jiang suddenly spoke up, "Xiaojiu, Ahan, you two need to work hard."
There was a brief moment of silence around them, followed by an outburst of laughter.
Even for someone who loved being out of tune, the topic made Ye Jiuliang feel extremely embarrassed.
Now they were rushing them to have kids, too.
"Did you hear that, Ajiu? I’m waiting to be an uncle," Ji Mingqian chimed in to mingle in the fun.
"Get lost," Ye Jiuliang scolded with a laugh, "If you want to hold a child that badly, find yourself a bride and have her bear you one."
Ji Mingqian was good at calculating, "How about this then, you guys have a daughter, and later on, she can marry my son."
"Why don’t you have a daughter for our son to marry," Ye Jiuliang retorted, "Dream on."
Jiang Yisheng’s eyes slightly drooped, a flash of desolation briefly surfacing in the depths of his gaze.
"Asheng, you look a bit pale, are you feeling unwell?" Feng Yi, who was sitting closest to him, noticed something amiss and blurted out his concern.
His voice, not deliberately lowered, allowed everyone to hear, and a wave of concerned glances gathered on Jiang Yisheng.
Under those searing stares, Jiang Yisheng couldn’t ignore them. Lifting his head, he said with an embarrassed smile, "I’m fine, I just played games too late last night and didn’t get much sleep."
"You should play games during the day and avoid staying up late at night," Veya said with a sigh of relief, nagging a bit.
Jiang Yisheng nodded obediently, accepting the lecture.
Suddenly, someone elbowed him gently on the side.
The low voice was deliberately hushed, audible to only the two of them, "Are you really okay?"
Jiang Yisheng didn’t look around and responded indifferently, "I’m fine."
Ji Mingqian frowned, sensing somewhat that he seemed unhappy.
Wei Bei stepped into the living room, where laughter filled the air, making it lively and warm.
In his hands were several documents, indicating he had just returned from the company.
His gaze fell on Ye Jiuliang, and Wei Bei said, "Madam, at the entrance I saw Mr. Ye, still waiting outside."
The chattering in the surroundings abruptly ceased.
Ye Jiuliang straightened up, her eyes losing all traces of mirth.
The news sure traveled fast; they’d come knocking on the door so soon.
"Keep chatting, I’ll go have a look outside."
She stood up, and the person beside her stood up with her.
Ye Jiuliang raised her eyes to look at the man beside her, tugged at the corners of her lips into a smile, and pushed him back onto the sofa, "Don’t worry, I won’t be abducted. I’ll be back after a few words."
Li Mochan took his coat and handed it to her, his voice cold but unable to hide the tenderness for her, "It’s cold outside, put this on."
Ye Jiuliang felt a warmth in her heart, took the coat, put it on, and walked out.
Mrs. Jiang had never met Ye Rong; she only knew from Jiang Yisheng that Ye Jiuliang and the Ye Family did not have a good relationship.
Watching Ye Jiuliang leave on her own, she couldn’t help but worry, "Will Ajiu be bullied going out alone?"
"Grandma Jiang, don’t worry, no one can bully Jiuliang," Feng Yi said.
He wasn’t just saying this to comfort her, if Ye Jiuliang could be bullied, then she wouldn’t be Ye Jiuliang.
Snow lay on the rooftops, turning the world a vast expanse of white.
"Madam."
The patrolling guard saw Ye Jiuliang, and his loud, clear voice was uniform, the white mist from his breath dissipating in the air.
Ye Jiuliang nodded, her gaze sweeping over the white sedan at the door, her red lips pursed.
In the car, Aren looked at the old master who was pretending to sleep in the back seat, his face showing helplessness.
"Old master, why don’t we give Miss Jiuliang a call?"
Waiting for a guard to relay the message could take forever; it might be better to call Ye Jiuliang directly.
There was no response. The old master Ye crossed his hands over his stomach, the bulging veins on the back of his hands revealed his inner turmoil.
"Knock, knock—"
Suddenly, someone knocked on the car window from outside.
Aren looked up, and through the car window, the delicate features of the woman came into view.
"Old master, it’s Miss Jiuliang," he said, then opened the car door and got out first.
Old Master Ye slowly opened his eyes, a sharp glimmer shining in their depths.
"Miss Jiuliang," Aren greeted Ye Jiuliang, then went around to open the car door for the old man in the back seat.
Ye Jiuliang withdrew her hand back into her pocket, her indifferent eyes fixed on the elderly man alighting from the back seat.
Her red lips parted slightly, and her voice carried a tone of detachment, "Grandfather."
Old Master Ye gave her a glance; her indifferent expression ignited the anger he had barely kept at bay.
His face hardened, and he scolded with furious eyes, "You still know I’m your grandfather. You went into my study to steal when I wouldn’t give you the household registration book. I only learned about your marriage registration from the newspaper. Ye Jiuliang, in what way do you actually regard me as your grandfather?"
Ye Jiuliang watched him with calm eyes, as if she had anticipated his reaction.
"Is there anything else?"
It felt like punching cotton, frustrating and ineffective. The old master Ye burned with anger, unable to let it out.
"Ye Jiuliang, do you have to provoke me like this?"
Ye Jiuliang gazed dispassionately at him, a mocking smile creeping over her lips, "Isn’t it tiring?"
The three short words hit Old Master Ye like a cudgel, heavily pounding on his head.
His face, still flushed with residual anger, showed a flash of astonishment, the twisted expression somewhat comical.
"What do you mean?" he asked.
"Pretending to be a good grandfather in front of me, isn’t it tiring? If I remember correctly, your attitude towards me changed after my father passed away. The reason for that change, I believe, is crystal clear to you, old man," Ye Jiuliang lightly tapped her foot on the snow-covered ground, her perceptive eyes staring directly at him.
"I don’t care what the reason is, but if you wish to control me like you do Ye Lei and the others, then, I’m sorry, that’s impossible," she said.
The granddaughter who was once looked down upon by him had suddenly come into favor. In the interest-driven Ye Family, the reason wasn’t hard to guess.
