Chapter 236: Unexpected

~7 min read 1,324 words

Ren Ce Fei had been looking at these pastries, about to pick a few more kinds.

Two kinds the Princess Consort likes, and one kind Meng Ce Fei also likes; she wanted to come out herself, so she ought to bring some back for them.

She was picking when she heard Sui Sui's words.

Ren Ce Fei followed her gaze and saw it was a tea house on the street corner.

To be honest, Ren Ce Fei felt a bit disdainful.

But Sui Sui liked it, and the Prince had already carried her over there.

Ren Ce Fei wasn't too happy inside, but after thinking, she still turned and followed over there.

Ren Ce Fei walked and said to Sun Auntie beside her: "I just feel sorry for the child; I'm not actually wanting to drink this stuff— that tea house looks undrinkable just by looking."

Before she could finish, she heard a loud bang behind her.

The sound was too loud; Ren Ce Fei felt it as if it were right by her ear, exploding suddenly; she was frightened like a startled bird, shrank back, then jumped up, and at the same time turned her head to look.

The noble lady's bearing kept Ren Ce Fei from screaming out.

Or when one is too afraid, one cannot make a sound.

Ren Ce Fei's face was full of terror, her body stiff as she turned.

Then she saw a person lying where she had just walked.

At that moment, the person's head was split open and bleeding.

The bright red blood slowly trickled onto the blue stone slabs, looking gory and frightening.

Ren Ce Fei had never seen such a scene before.

She hadn't even seen a chicken killed.

As the blood flowed, a flash of red crossed her vision; Ren Ce Fei could bear it no longer, let out a short scream, then her eyes rolled back and she fainted.

Sun Auntie was so frightened her face went white; she instinctively steadied the person, her breathing tightening considerably.

But, being older and experienced, she got past the initial fright; Sun Auntie quickly reacted: "Quick, quick, quick, help the mistress go rest over there!"

The maids and servants also finally reacted, everyone joining forces to help the fainted Ren Ce Fei to the tea house side, found a spot and sat down.

Prince Qi also got a fright.

He had been playing with Sui Sui, saying they would go kill a sheep to eat in the afternoon.

Sui Sui thought wool was nice and soft, so Prince Qi said he would find someone to make a wool mat for her.

Sui Sui also said she wanted to dye it a pretty pink, like her clothes.

Prince Qi had no intention of disagreeing.

He replied with a chuckle, about to say that just one pink would be too monotonous, shouldn't they dye some other colors?

But before he could finish, he heard a bang behind him, instinctively turned his head, and saw someone fall from the pastry shop's upper floor.

Then came Ren Ce Fei's scream!

Prince Qi really turned pale from fright.

His body had been weak lately; this fright made his complexion even paler.

But his hands stayed steady as he held Sui Sui.

Having reacted, not wanting the child to be scared, Prince Qi raised his hand and gently covered Sui Sui's eyes, then turned away: "Sui Sui, don't look, it's not something nice. By the way, Sui Sui, wouldn't just one color on the wool mat be too monotonous? How about adding a snow‑cyan or bamboo‑cyan? Actually blue would be fine too."

Prince Qi spoke as much as he could, to calm his own panic and to distract Sui Sui, lest the child notice more of that.

While shielding Sui Sui, he also signaled those nearby to protect Shen Hua Tang and Liu He Meng, not wanting the child to see such a bloody scene.

Sui Sui heard the commotion but didn't see what was happening.

Over there were many people; although she was held in her Father King's arms, her small stature limited her view, so she could see little.

She only saw something fall from upstairs, and after that she didn't know anything.

However, she did see that Aunt Ren had fainted.

At this moment, not worrying about the wool mat, Sui Sui anxiously tugged at her Father King's hair: "Father King, Father King, what's wrong with Aunt Ren?"

Prince Qi didn't want to frighten the child, so he instinctively lied: "She ate too much, got tired, fell asleep, and will wake up soon."

Ren Ce Fei had just been revived by Sun Auntie's pressure on her philtrum after fainting, and she heard Prince Qi say that.

She instinctively wanted to retort: "What nonsense are you spouting?"

The words rose to her lips, but she swallowed them back instinctively.

Right, Sui Sui!

They still have the child with them; we mustn't scare the children.

Having come to, Ren Ce Fei opened her eyes, glared at Prince Qi, but ultimately didn't rebut his words.

Sui Sui had been worried about Aunt Ren, but hearing she just ate too much and was sleeping, then seeing her eyes open, Sui Sui felt much more relieved.

She shyly slipped her arms around Prince Qi's neck, burying her head in his neck: "I know, Father King."

The child was obedient and soft; just looking at her made Prince Qi's heart melt, especially since the child was clinging to his neck so dependently.

Ouch!

His little cotton jacket!

It's so warm!

Prince Qi grew happier the more he thought, but he couldn't avoid asking about what happened over there.

So, after comforting Sui Sui with a pat, he carried her to the tea house, sat at the same table as Ren Ce Fei, and then had Sui Si go inquire.

Someone had fallen, split their head open, and was bleeding.

Passersby were startled, and nearby shop vendors were also frightened enough to be angry.

Everyone instinctively gathered together, and the pastry shop also sent someone out to look.

Upon looking…

They discovered it was their young master!

The boss and the helpers shouted "Aiyo wa ya," and a crowd gathered to help.

Sui Si watched the scene, then glanced over at the Prince; Prince Qi raised his hand, gesturing for him to also bring people over to take a look and see if they could help.

If it were in the past, Prince Qi wouldn't bother with these matters.

He well knows his own abilities are insufficient, and in daily life he rarely gets involved in trivial matters.

No matter if they're commoners or high officials.

Don't get involved in anything!

He doesn't like it!

But now…

Prince Qi raised his hand and touched Sui Sui's soft little face; his heart had already softened beyond words.

He thought, just consider it as praying for blessings and accumulating virtue for the child.

He rarely has a daughter.

And she will likely be his only daughter in this lifetime.

So he ought to cherish her.

Ren Ce Fei is so smart; she saw through the Prince's thoughts at a glance.

But at this moment, her thoughts are all on Sui Sui.

She thought, if it weren't for Sui Sui suddenly saying she wanted to come drink tea, they'd probably still be standing there.

Then the person who fell from upstairs might have landed on any of them.

Either her or the Prince!

If such a big person fell and hit them, who knows what state they'd be smashed into!

Ren Ce Fei the more she thought, the more frightened she got; her hands couldn't help trembling.

Prince Qi watched from the side, couldn't help rolling his eyes: "Look at your prospects."

Ren Ce Fei hearing this, directly snorted coldly, her gaze on Prince Qi's empty hand: "If you're capable, don't shake!"

The second watch is at 19:00.
