Chapter 1358

"Shen Yaowei opened a video call. Want to take a look?" Wang Chuansheng walked over and asked Jiang Yuan in a low voice.

"Did Shen Yaowei go with Team Six?" Jiang Yuan looked up.

"Yeah, they got lucky." Wang Chuansheng was genuinely a bit envious. Going with the team to these eight locations—on one hand, it reduces some criminal investigation pressure on the Anwan Municipal Bureau; on the other hand, it's to claim merits.

This time, it's equivalent to a joint task between Shannan and Pingzhou. Pingzhou's provincial department has their reward system, and Shannan also has its own merit ledger. Not going would be a waste.

But really, only one person might actually get a share of the pork. It's mostly down to luck. Team Six hit the mark, so Shen Yaowei from the accompanying team at least gets a commendation, and if he can scrape together a bit more, even a third-class merit is easy.

"Captain Jiang, we're now taking the suspect's fingerprints." Shen Yaowei, in police uniform, saluted Jiang Yuan and switched the video to the front camera.

A man with a clean, non-greasy face, arms tattooed with veins bulging, was placed in the center of the video screen.

From a police officer's perspective, such a person also deserves to be said to have a complicated past. Those without sufficiently complex experiences couldn't tattoo such a large area of beautiful tattoos, nor could they develop the psychological resilience of ten officers clinging to them while remaining calm.

Two criminal investigators flanked the suspect, one on each side. The person on the right grabbed his hand and pressed his fingers onto the fingerprint scanner, rolling them back and forth.

A person's fingerprints aren't just on the front—sides have them too, and they're often where flaws are easily exposed.

After pressing all ten fingers, the on-site investigators also took prints of both palms and side palms. The principle is the same—just a much larger area.

"Report to command: Team Six has completed fingerprint collection." Shen Yaowei put his phone on the table and saluted the camera respectfully.

The accompanying officers all saluted as well. Everyone knew Jiang Yuan was watching from the other end, and each expression and movement was utterly serious.

The suspect, recently re-handcuffed, looked a bit dazed. His expression sank, then his face twisted as he suddenly shouted: "Leader, I'm innocent! They violated my privacy, threatened me, and even… even punched my stomach…"

"Have the prosecutor intervene early. Send the files over." Jiang Yuan's two short sentences were also directed at Shen Yaowei.

"Yes." Shen Yaowei quickly opened his laptop, connected the fingerprint scanner, and began packaging all the data inside…

The 1000dpi requirement isn't low—by domestic equipment standards today, most devices can't meet it. Shen Yaowei and the others had specially selected newer models.

The suspect sensed something was wrong and shouted again.

The officer standing beside the video call phone quietly lowered the phone's volume.

Meanwhile, Jiang Yuan, thousands of miles away, had already had someone take the phone away. Once Wang Chuansheng adjusted the received file's format, Jiang Yuan directly opened the newly collected fingerprints and began a one-to-one comparison.

Theoretically, comparing such fingerprints doesn't even require marking feature points. Many old-school criminal investigators from earlier eras mastered this technique: facing a suspect, they'd pull out a pre-prepared fingerprint card, have the suspect press a finger, and compare on the spot. Why not use phones or laptops? Because they hadn't been invented yet.

Jiang Yuan's current comparison work is essentially no different—just using a high-definition system to see the third-level features of fingerprints, thus raising the cost of fingerprint identification from a one-cent fingerprint card to millions, and…

He can prove a print belongs to a person using an even smaller area.

Among the third-level features of fingerprints, the most useful is the sweat pore feature—every pore on every person is unique, just like nostrils and eyes; no one can grow two identical nostrils or eyes.

So, when a forensic technician obtains a fingerprint fragment, if they can examine sweat pore features, they only need an extremely small piece to use as evidence.

Moreover, this is actually the most important point: sweat pore features make up nearly the largest category among third-level fingerprint features. Outside of this, whether it's ridge width, edge morphology of dot ridges, etc., they all require higher magnification to clearly display the features.

In other words, 1000dpi isn't quite enough—it needs 1500 or even 2000; otherwise, the error rate would be too high—especially for a country like the U. S., where if a project has a relatively high passive error rate, someone, both inside and outside law enforcement, will resort to mixing fish eyes with pearls to fabricate a high active error rate, achieving some shady purpose.

"Confirmed match."

As everyone held their breath, Jiang Yuan completed the comparison.

The fingerprint collected from the clothing was a discontinuous partial print. For second-level features, it's heavily damaged, but it barely affects third-level features. Although Jiang Yuan spent little time, he actually selected several positions and verified multiple times before confirming.

After all, if he confirmed it here, the suspect over there should be arrested—making a mistake would be truly troublesome.

Brigade Commander Liu Zhuangshi, waiting nearby, immediately picked up his phone and called Team Six on the front line.

Shen Yaowei was just tagging along to help; the team leader was naturally from the Anwan Criminal Investigation Brigade.

Wang Chuansheng picked up his phone again, turned up the volume, and showed it to Jiang Yuan and the others.

Still maintaining the connected video call, the suspect's hoarse shouting came through again.

He actually realized he was about to face punishment—especially when his initial sense of luck was proven impossible, and all the worst predictions were about to come true. The only thing he could rely on was strength!

"Ha…"

On screen, the suspect strained his arms, veins bulging, even his tattoos seeming to strain into three dimensions.

If this were the opening scene of a movie, he might really have a slim chance. But in today's scene, the Chinese police were only worried he'd hurt himself, so they hurriedly soothed him: "Don't get excited, it's fine. Once we clarify the situation here, you can go back first…"

While deceiving him, the officers on left and right each extended their electric batons.

Shen Yaowei watched the batons approach and couldn't help voicing himself: "Zizi…"

The suspect straightened his waist, puffed his chest, stretched his neck—like a shrimp shaking itself from bottom to top.

Then the room fell silent.

The suspect stopped shouting, and the officers persuading him no longer needed to lie.

"We've taken the suspect back." The reporting officer told Liu Zhuangshi, got permission, and led the suspect out.

Meanwhile, in the command center meeting room, Liu Zhuangshi kept his eyes bright and sparkling after hanging up—like his five-year-old daughter wanting a toy—and reached out both hands to Jiang Yuan: "Director Jiang, we still have lots of fingerprint-containing evidence!"
