Chapter 972

~6 min read 1,043 words

Danda Group.

The blue-glass building shimmered brightly, as if a treasure artifact from the Immortal Realm had fallen to the mortal world.

Inside the building, Chen Kunfu and others were locked in, moving dazedly like souls trapped within the artifact, as if working, yet doing nothing at all. Yet still, officers in uniform kept dragging people out of the tower.

This made the souls increasingly inclined to move inward, more willing to huddle together for warmth.

At this point, corner offices and 270-degree panoramic views became useless; most preferred to stay in the large open office, as if it offered them some measure of safety.

“New people arrived,” Chen Kunfu wrote on his documents, though most of his attention remained on the various chat groups.

Danda’s office building was packed with people, mostly ordinary workers; the police couldn’t confiscate everyone’s phone.

As for warnings against taking photos, they couldn’t stop people from posting pictures in small groups, or forwarding images from small groups to larger ones.

Chen Kunfu watched with great interest and even forwarded a few photos himself.

He now knew why the bosses had been targeted, and his fear had lessened.

What did the dirty deeds from Danda’s early years have to do with Danda now?

A colleague beside him was frantically scrolling his phone and asked casually, “What new people?”

“Police. This batch is from Economic Crimes Investigation,” Chen Kunfu paused, then said, “Criminal cases are done; now they’re going after economic ones. I think Danda’s stock rose too early.”

“Let these fools who grabbed stocks in the fire burn to death,” the colleague grumbled—he had money in his stock account too, but dared not buy his own company’s shares, and now regretted missing the surge.

Of course, what hurt more was watching others make money. That was truly worse than losing money yourself.

Chen Kunfu chuckled softly. “It probably won’t happen that fast.”

“Let me check,” the colleague was already excited, quickly opening his trading app.

“How’s it going?” Chen Kunfu waited a moment, hearing no reply, then looked over.

"More funds are locked in the ceiling. Retail investors are all insane; even some funds are acting like individual traders," the colleague shook his head. "Our crappy company, with all this chaos, it's a miracle it hasn't gone bankrupt yet."

“Well… not necessarily,” Chen Kunfu said.

The colleague stared. “You never said that before. Didn’t you always say this company would collapse eventually?”

“But things are different now,” Chen Kunfu said seriously. “I’m a manager now, you’re a supervisor. Six of the seven directors were cut down to three, all those VPs and above got axed— isn’t this exactly the company we dreamed of?”

The colleague was stunned. “Huh… actually, there is a bit of truth to that…”

“In fact, it’s even better than our dream company!” Chen Kunfu waved his hand. “This place was always ruled by villains; ordinary people couldn’t survive, couldn’t even slack off. Anyone with a way out had already left. Only people like us—hardworking, with no other options—were left behind. Now the villains are all arrested, the business still runs, production continues. Is there a better company than this?”

The colleague: “Really…”

Chen Kunfu: “Right?”

“So these people buying stocks… they actually know something?”

“Probably just buying blindly,” Chen Kunfu swore. He hadn’t dared buy his own company’s stock either.

Iveco vans pulled up one after another outside the police station; out stepped neatly dressed white-collar workers.

The Economic Crimes Investigation officers were all polite—not exactly warm, but certainly not as brutal as the Criminal Investigation team. After all, the people they arrested were those who wouldn’t jump over a one-meter-high wall.

Dealing with such criminals was like dealing with a golden retriever: big, sure, but anyone who knew better understood they weren’t dangerous. But criminal suspects? They started off as Akita dogs—aggressive, prone to fighting and biting, with inherently bad temperaments, and often came from terrible backgrounds.

Jiang Yuan’s system interface continued flashing numbers.

Finally, when the task progress hit 300, the task immediately settled.

Task: Purge Them!

Task Description: Criminal Zhang Weili chose an irreversible path—send his kindred spirits after him.

Task Progress: 300 arrested.

Task Reward: Mine Disaster Site Examination (LV5)

Jiang Yuan lit a cigarette, a small celebration and a small memorial.

These 300 people’s sentences may not be long individually, but combined, they’d be enough to outlive a hundred of them.

In Jiang Yuan’s view, a “Purge”-level task with 300 people was truly not much. He’d handled multiple cases arresting 300 people already; it no longer felt remarkable.

As for major Criminal Investigation teams, arresting 300 people wasn’t daily work, but it was certainly an annual occurrence.

Perhaps the reason was simply that Zhang Weili’s kindred were too few—most suspects linked to him had already been caught, and there was nowhere left to expand.

The task reward, however, Jiang Yuan glanced at, then paid it little further attention.

Mine disaster site examination was indeed one of the forensic duties, but Jiang Yuan had no desire to handle such work—and hoped he never would.

Of course, gaining a skill was good; technically, mine disaster site examination offered plenty of relevant technical details.

A LV5 skill was enough for anyone to spend a lifetime mastering; the information volume was absolutely sufficient.

Jiang Yuan nodded slightly, then turned to Tao Lu. “Chief Tao, I think my work here is temporarily complete. Zhang Weili’s case should be considered concluded.”

“Who?” Tao Lu didn’t immediately react.

“The fugitive thief,” Jiang Yuan said.

“Oh? Oh… him. Right, that thief’s been caught… no, Danda’s people are all arrested now. Zhang Weili’s case… fine, Zhang Weili’s case can be considered closed.” Tao Lu spoke slightly incoherently.

After all, taking down a listed company wasn’t rare, but it was certainly a major operation. From Tao Lu’s perspective, it had nothing to do with Zhang Weili anymore.

Jiang Yuan smiled and didn’t press the point. “I’ll go tell Commissar Huang.”

“Yes, yes, of course.”

“One more thing,” Jiang Yuan said, ending the previous topic. “When I checked fingerprints earlier, I noticed one that stood out.”

“Linked to any case?”

“Yes, but it’s only a partial match, and it’s an old cold case—there’s no guarantee we’ll find the killer.”
