Chapter 154: Obito's Regret

~7 min read 1,220 words

"The final exam is next week, so you can all review at home over the weekend," Muyue reminded after finishing the last class on Friday.

There will be no classes next week; exams run from Monday to Wednesday, and then vacation starts immediately.

"Another vacation already."

"What should we do during the break? Hiking? Picnic?"

"I hope I do well. If I get ninety in theory and thirty in practicals, I can enjoy a nice holiday..."

As the final exam was mentioned, the students in the classroom began discussing.

"Teacher Muyue, will there still be special training this break? Has it been decided?" Gang Zitie asked.

He wasn't worried about being in the top eight; he had the advantage of having attended one special training session, and he had never slacked off in his usual practice.

"It's been decided. There will also be special training after this term. It starts three days after the exam results come out, and the selected students will be notified by the school in advance," Muyue said.

The intern plan does not affect the special training during the break; both will proceed together.

"Will you still be teaching us, Teacher Muyue?" Shenyue Chuyun asked the question he cared about most.

If the teacher in charge wasn't Muyue, his expectations would drop somewhat, because another teacher might not teach as well as Muyue.

"I won't be in charge of the special training this time. I have other things to do," Muyue replied.

"But don't worry. This special training will be taught by three teachers together. The school places great importance on it."

Considering that other teachers might not be as capable as Muyue, Hiruzen Sarutobi arranged for two additional teachers to teach together, all of whom were chosen for their outstanding performance.

"Ah, then won't we not see you for a long time, Teacher Muyue?" Hongdou said with some disappointment.

"If I have time, I'll come and check on the special training," Muyue said with a smile.

After class, Muyue told his disciples about the intern program.

"This break, Obito and Guy, you two don't need to attend special training. You will get a head start on experiencing ninja work as intern ninja," Muyue said.

"Intern ninja?"

"Getting a head start on experiencing ninja work?"

Obito and Might Guy focused on different key points.

"Teacher Muyue, does experiencing ninja work in advance mean we take on missions?" Might Guy asked.

"That's right," Muyue nodded.

"But since you are intern ninja, you can only accept low-rank missions," Muyue said.

"Will we also get mission pay like regular ninja?" Might Guy asked excitedly.

If that were the case, Might Guy thought it would be great, because then he could help support his family early through his own efforts.

"The mission pay is the same as for regular ninja," Muyue replied with a smile.

"Just me and Guy? What about Rin and Shisui?" Obito thought for a moment and asked.

"The intern program is for fourth-year students. Shisui is a first-year student, so he can't participate."

"For the intern ninja program in fourth grade, only a small number of students are selected; the other students still have normal special training. Rin wasn't chosen," Muyue continued.

"I see. What a shame," Obito said regretfully.

Getting a head start on familiarizing himself with ninja work as an intern seemed like a good thing to Obito—it would let him earn money and help him become an excellent ninja faster later.

"It is a bit of a pity, but since I wasn't selected, there's no helping it. Please share your ninja work experiences with us then," Rin said with a smile.

Rin, who hadn't been chosen, felt a little regret, but not much. Even without this internship, she would graduate and become a ninja in a few months.

"Leave it to me! I'll be sure to tell you all about the mission process and my feelings," Obito said, patting his chest.

"Then I'll count on you, Obito," Rin replied with a gentle smile.

"This time, the intern assignments are pretty much the same as for regular ninja: three students per squad with one instructor. You and Might Guy are in the same squad," Muyue continued.

Hearing Muyue say that, Obito felt even more regretful. If only he could have been in the same squad as Rin Nohara — doing missions together every day would surely make her realize his remarkable qualities more deeply.

"Muyue-sensei, if it's three per squad, then who's the third person?" Obito asked curiously.

"You'll find out when the time comes. It's someone you know," Muyue said with a chuckle.

"Someone I know? Uchiha Tekka? Or Shiranui Genma?"

Obito blurted out several names, but Muyue shook his head at each one. Obito scratched his head and stopped asking — 'someone you know' was way too broad a range.

"Anyway, as long as it's not Kakashi," Obito thought to himself.

He felt that was completely impossible; Kakashi had graduated years ago, how could he possibly come back for a ninja academy internship?

"Remember to review properly when you get back. There's still a final exam before the internship," Muyue reminded.

"Ah, I almost forgot about the exam. Damn Shadow Clone — I told him to study but he ignored me," Obito groaned.

Even though using a Shadow Clone to study would still cause pain when dispelled, the pain from the clone was instantaneous, while studying on his own was continuous agony.

"You need to work hard, Obito. Your practical scores are up, but you can't give up on theory either," Rin Nohara said gently, cheering him on.

The next morning, Muyue got up early and went to the South Forest to teach his students.

Obito practiced nature transformation with the Breathing Technique, Might Guy and Shisui sparred, and Rin Nohara practiced medical ninjutsu.

"Fire Style: Phoenix Flower Claw Crimson!"

Obito formed a seal with his left hand while holding four kunai in his right. With just a single seal, he completed the ninjutsu release, and the four flame-engulfed kunai blasted small craters into the ground.

"Finally, no more mistakes — using a one-handed single seal for the technique," Obito said, very pleased.

"Leaf Whirlwind!"

"Leaf Great Whirlwind!"

"Leaf Strong Whirlwind!"

Might Guy, unleashing the Stone Breathing Technique at full power, tried to disrupt Shisui's rhythm with ferocious attacks.

Under Might Guy's immense strength, large trees kept falling with constant booming sounds. However, Shisui remained calm, repeatedly using the Body Flicker Technique to dodge and wait for Might Guy to expose a weakness.

Looking at the devastated forest, Muyue felt that from now on he would have to make them fight in an open area, or else the trees would keep getting thinner.

Muyue used Appraisal to check the two's progress with the Breathing Technique. Shisui had reached ninety-seven, needing just three more points, while Might Guy was at eighty-two, needing eighteen more proficiency points.

"Obito should win this time again," Muyue speculated inwardly.

If Obito didn't goof off too much, given Might Guy's current Breathing Technique progress, it would be hard for Guy to beat Obito.

But whoever won was pretty much the same — their theory scores were too average, so they were doomed not to get a perfect grade.

Here's a short chapter.
