Chapter 163: The Idol Is White Fang

~10 min read 1,866 words

Kakashi, who was about to start moving, froze, thought for a moment, and finally followed behind Mu Yue.

If it wasn't luck, he was a bit curious about how Obito had managed it.

Then Mu Yue led Kakashi to begin tailing Obito.

With his Byakugan and the memory of Root training, Mu Yue's concealment was spot-on; Obito had no idea he was being followed, focusing entirely on finding the mission target.

"Light yellow fur, height twenty centimeters…" Obito muttered the mission target's info to himself while looking around.

Obito even opened trash can lids to check if the dog was inside.

Seeing Obito's antics, Kakashi felt a little speechless—what kind of dog would hide in a trash can?

"Isn't that little Obito? Are you looking for something?"

Suddenly, an old man smiled and stopped Obito to ask.

"I'm looking for a little light yellow dog, about this big." Obito gestured as he spoke.

"A light yellow little dog, huh? Haven't seen one. There aren't many people walking around lately, but I remember that guy Ueki likes to wander around. I'll take you to ask him." The old man said.

"Thank you so much, grandpa!" Obito said gratefully.

Then the old man led Obito to find the man named Ueki.

"A light yellow little dog? I think I saw it on the east side of the main district, but I've forgotten exactly where." The old man named Ueki thought for a moment and said.

"You're really old and your memory's shot—that's no different from saying nothing." The first old man complained. The entire east side of the main district was huge.

"Hehe, grandpa, it's okay! It went from all of Konoha to just the east side, that's a huge reduction in scope." After saying that, Obito thanked the old man again.

Then Obito headed to the east side of Konoha's main district. Because his searching look was too obvious, another old man stopped him, and so, guided by one old person after another, Obito quickly got the dog's location, then used Breathing Burst to capture it.

"Well? Do you still think this is luck?" Mu Yue turned to look at Kakashi and asked.

"No. It's a victory of information." Facing Mu Yue, Kakashi didn't argue.

He had also tried getting information from passersby, but the people on the street weren't as kind as the old ladies and grandpas Obito had met; most gave a perfunctory answer, and some couldn't even be bothered to respond.

The old people Obito encountered were practically eager to lead him straight to the mission target. If they didn't know themselves, they'd use their connections to ask around for him—they couldn't have been more enthusiastic.

"But under the same conditions, I could do better." Kakashi said.

Obito could have finished the mission in a shorter time, but because he kept doing some inexplicable things, it ended up taking nearly an hour.

Kakashi even saw Obito helping an old lady down the steps while doing the mission.

If he had the same informational advantage as Obito, Kakashi could compress the mission time to under forty minutes.

"Obito's ability to make your conditions unequal is his real strength." Mu Yue shook his head and said.

Forcing the idea of equal conditions is just being unreasonable—Kakashi could never have such high popularity, so there's no such thing as equal conditions.

"And why think about competing under equal conditions instead of using your own strengths to make up for your teammate's weaknesses?

Obito is a bit slow in doing things, but he has an information advantage. You can work together with Obito—your execution plus Obito's information, cooperating like that, the mission efficiency goes up." Mu Yue continued.

Kakashi didn't say anything, but based on his mission experience, Mu Yue wasn't wrong.

Then Mu Yue took the three of them to the Hokage building to turn in the mission.

"That was fast! You've already finished the third mission." The registrar said in surprise.

【Disciple Might Guy worked hard to complete the entrusted mission, obtaining Chakra +10, and was led by the teacher himself for an additional reward of Chakra +5】

【Disciple Uchiha Obito worked hard to complete the entrusted mission, obtaining Chakra +10, and was led by the teacher himself for an additional reward of Chakra +5】

"Fifteen points again this time. So even at the same rank, the reward varies with difficulty." Mu Yue thought to himself.

"Well, Kakashi, are you convinced now? Haha, I, Uchiha Obito, am Konoha's Mission King!" Obito said smugly, hands on his hips and laughing.

"You got so cocky from doing a few D-rank missions. Anyone would think you'd done an S-rank mission." For some reason, seeing Obito so proud irritated Kakashi a little.

"You haven't done one either, so how do you know I can't handle an S-rank mission?" Obito was very confident.

"Obito was awesome today!" Might Guy gave a thumbs-up in praise.

Finding it first once could be luck, but finding it first three times in a row—luck doesn't explain that. That's true ability.

"Today's the first day of the mission, so I'm treating everyone to grilled meat," Mu Yue said.

After three consecutive missions and all the random bits in between, it was already time for lunch, so instead of taking on another mission, Mu Yue decided to take her students out to eat.

"Alright!" Obito cheered.

"Yo, Kakashi, want to see who can eat more meat?" Might Guy issued a challenge. Obito had won all three missions today, and Might Guy wanted to win at least once.

Kakashi was a little speechless. Ever since he joined Mu Yue's squad, he was either being challenged or about to be challenged — even mealtime wouldn't let him rest.

But when the grilled meat actually arrived, Kakashi managed to enjoy a moment of peace, because everyone was too busy devouring the meat Mu Yue was grilling.

At first, Kakashi felt a bit awkward and embarrassed, since normally when you eat grilled meat, everyone cooks their own.

After taking a bite of the meat Mu Yue had forcibly placed in his bowl, Kakashi silently accepted her kindness.

Kakashi was deeply puzzled. They were all using the same grill, the same seasonings, and he hadn't seen Mu Yue bring out any secret sauce — yet the meat she grilled was far tastier than theirs, as if it weren't even the same dish.

Due to special circumstances, Kakashi had been cooking for himself from a very young age. He considered himself a decent cook, but facing Mu Yue, he truly felt lost.

"Could it be her control over the heat, making every part perfectly done?" Kakashi speculated inwardly.

If he didn't know that no ninjutsu could improve the taste of food, he would have seriously suspected that Mu Yue was using some kind of technique.

After eating their fill, the four of them didn't leave immediately but sat around chatting.

"Mu Yue-sensei, you're like my Sage of Six Paths!" Obito used a metaphor to express his gratitude and admiration toward Mu Yue.

"More like the Sage of Grilled Meat," Mu Yue said with a light laugh, tapping Obito on the head.

"Hehe, hey, who's your most admired ninja?" Obito scratched his head and smiled as he started the topic.

"When it comes to admiration, it has to be my father and Mu Yue-sensei," Might Guy declared with great enthusiasm.

Kakashi didn't join the conversation. At this point, he no longer had any ninja he admired or looked up to.

"Speaking of admiration, I actually have a ninja I really look up to," Mu Yue said with a smile.

"Wow, the ninja Mu Yue-sensei admires — I'm so curious," Obito's eyes lit up immediately.

To her students, Mu Yue was both a warm and mysterious presence.

Although she was initially just a chunin instructor, she had mastered all kinds of ninjutsu and forbidden techniques, possessed unfathomable strength, and told them not to reveal their master-student relationship outside. Even someone as thick-skinned as Obito could tell that Mu Yue was no ordinary person.

That such a mysterious and powerful teacher actually had a ninja she admired — Obito was really curious.

Might Guy also tilted his head, listening intently; he was just as curious as Obito.

Kakashi wasn't very interested; he figured it was probably one of the Sannin or the Hokage.

"He is a powerful ninja known as the White Fang of the Leaf. He once made great contributions to the Leaf and was feared on the battlefield. An extremely outstanding Leaf ninja." As she spoke, Mu Yue's eyes seemed to shine, her face full of yearning.

"The legendary White Fang of the Leaf? I think I've heard of him too — a super strong ninja," Obito said excitedly.

"I've heard of him too. He was a very strong ninja, but I think he died later," Might Guy added.

The White Fang's reputation was still strong in the Leaf. Even students still in school had heard of his fame.

Kakashi looked at Mu Yue with some surprise. He hadn't expected Mu Yue, such an excellent ninja, to admire his father who had committed suicide.

Even though he hadn't known Mu Yue long, Kakashi had to admit she was excellent in every way — much better than his previous instructor.

Hearing Might Guy's words, Kakashi recalled some memories, clenched his fists, stood up, and silently left the barbecue restaurant.

"Hey, Kakashi, where are you going? Too much to eat and need the bathroom?" Obito asked in confusion. Why would he suddenly leave in the middle of a good chat?

Kakashi didn't answer Obito's question and walked away without looking back.

"I've already paid the bill. You can sit here a while or go for a walk. We'll meet at Training Ground No. 22 at 1:30 PM. I'm going to check on Kakashi," Mu Yue said as she stood up.

"This Kakashi is so weird. Even the girls in our class aren't as hard to read as him," Obito couldn't help complaining.

Might Guy was also scratching his head, not understanding what had happened.

Leaving the barbecue restaurant, Kakashi walked aimlessly until he reached the riverbank. He sat down and stared blankly at the flowing water.

"Great contributions, extremely outstanding… If that's really the case, then why was he criticized to the point of suicide…?" Kakashi murmured.

"A ninja must strictly follow the rules and put the mission first — only then can he be considered a qualified ninja."

"Is that really what you think?" Kakashi suddenly heard Mu Yue's voice from behind.

Today I—I had insomnia last night and only fell asleep after 3 AM, then woke up after 8 AM, and didn't nap in the afternoon either. So sleepy, I can't write anymore.

Also, I'm recommending a friend's book.
