Chapter 180: Handling Might Guy and Son

~8 min read 1,562 words

"Haha, if I could advance, who would want to be a Genin forever?" Might Duy laughed loudly, but there was a hint of loneliness hidden in his eyes.

If he had been content to remain a Genin forever, he wouldn't have trained the Eight Gates for ten years straight.

Spending twenty years training nothing but a single taijutsu was a huge test for both body and mind.

In the end, he managed to learn the Eight Gates as he wished, but it took far too long, and his performance during that time made him a despised figure, with no chance to show his worth.

Forget A-rank or B-rank missions—he could hardly even get D-rank missions.

Many D-rank missions were subsidies from the village to train newly graduated ninja, not a place for the incompetent to coast into retirement.

Still, Might Duy believed this experience wasn't entirely bad; at least it tempered his heart and made him strong inside. His suffering wasn't in vain—it was a trial run for Might Guy, and he wouldn't let Might Guy walk the same path he did.

"The current ninja world is in chaos; both the Land of Lightning and the Land of Earth have designs on the Land of Fire. Right now, Konoha is short on combat power. It's unreasonable for a taijutsu master like you, Senior Dai, to remain a Genin," Muyue said with a pained expression.

Aside from the special case of Tokubetsu Jonin, there were only three ranks for ninja, and reaching each new rank was a qualitative change.

Genin on the battlefield could only follow orders, always being directed, while Chunin could serve as squad leaders for missions that weren't particularly important. Jonin were the main combat power in war, basically always serving as squad leaders when on a mission.

Then Muyue told Might Duy about the encounter battle they'd had during a C-rank mission.

"If things go on like this, the ninja world will only get more chaotic, and a great war might break out soon," Muyue said with a sigh.

"Has it really come to this?" Might Duy's expression turned serious.

A perpetual Genin like him rarely got intel about the war, simply because no one ever told him anything.

"For certain special reasons, I have relatively easy access to the Third Hokage. If you, Senior Dai, are willing to use the Eight Gates, then even if becoming a Jonin isn't certain, being promoted to Chunin should be no problem," Muyue said with a nod.

Even after becoming a trainee teacher, he hadn't resigned from his tutoring job; he just no longer went every week like before.

If Might Duy could open the Sixth Gate without major injury, he could be considered an ordinary elite Jonin in terms of power. With that kind of strength, and in a time of war, Muyue didn't believe Hiruzen Sarutobi wouldn't be tempted by such combat capability.

Hiruzen Sarutobi might hesitate to promote Might Duy directly to Jonin due to his record and lack of merits, but becoming a Chunin shouldn't be too hard.

There were two ways to become a Chunin: one was through the Chunin Exams, held twice a year in Konoha, where excellent performance led to promotion.

The other was through accumulated contributions—specifically, reaching a certain number of completed missions.

Everything in Konoha was tied to missions. Muyue's classes at the Ninja Academy counted as missions, and various actions during war were also calculated as missions.

Making Might Duy take the Chunin Exams was naturally impossible—Might Guy's birthday was tomorrow.

Although Might Duy's mission data didn't meet the requirements, his strength was high, which could make up for part of it.

Once he became a Chunin, Might Duy would have a chance to prove himself, and then by relying on his strength and merits, becoming a Tokubetsu Jonin wouldn't be difficult either.

As for becoming a full Jonin, Muyue thought it would be a bit tough, because Konoha's requirements for Jonin were very strict. A specialist like Might Duy would find it hard to become a regular Jonin unless he made major contributions in the war.

"Even if you only open the Sixth Gate, Senior Dai, your strength already surpasses many Jonin, and you're more than qualified as a Chunin."

"What do you think of this proposal, Senior Dai?" Muyue looked at Might Duy's rugged face and asked.

"Excellent! As expected of you, Teacher Muyue!" Might Duy nodded readily and gave Muyue a thumbs up.

"Thank you so much!" Might Duy stood up and gave Muyue a deep bow of gratitude.

While Muyue was speaking, Might Duy thought a lot.

The first thing he thought about was how to repay Muyue's kindness, and then he realized he had nothing to give.

The only thing he knew, the Eight Gates, Muyue also knew, and Muyue's strength was unfathomable—even with just two gates open, without using ninjutsu, he could surpass the power of Might Duy's six gates. So Muyue didn't need his help either.

But in the end, Might Duy agreed to Muyue's proposal—not because he wanted to prove himself to others, but for the sake of Might Guy.

He had trained all the way himself, and he knew that building a strong body required money; various supplements and training medicines were very expensive. Without money, the result was a lower ceiling and a pile of hidden injuries.

He hadn't had the chance before, so that was one thing. But now that the opportunity was right in front of him, if he didn't seize it, he wouldn't be a worthy father.

Accepting Muyue's favor without being able to repay it would make him feel guilty, but if he didn't seize this chance to make Might Guy's growth path smoother, he would feel even more guilty.

"Senior Dai, you don't need to do that. I'm doing this for the sake of Konoha as well," Muyue said with a smile.

Since Might Duy agreed, everything was set. Tomorrow, he would definitely give Might Guy a huge surprise.

"I have a secret medicine here, specially designed for taijutsu users, which can eliminate hidden injuries in the body. I'll give it to you, Senior, as an early celebration of your promotion," Muyue said, taking a medicine pill out of his ninja tool pouch and handing it to Might Duy.

Now that such medicines could be bought directly with money, they weren't as precious anymore. Helping Might Duy now was helping Might Guy in the future.

"Eliminate hidden injuries? At my age, I don't need that. You should take it back or leave it for Kai." Might Duy shook his head and refused.

Over the decades, he had accumulated a body full of hidden injuries; one secret medicine wouldn't be enough. He would rather leave such a good thing for Might Guy.

"I've set aside one for Guy over there; this pill is an extra. Senior Dai, you can take it and see the effects." Mu Yue placed the secret medicine in front of Might Duy.

Although Might Duy was reliable, Mu Yue still needed to see Might Duy swallow it to feel at ease. The medicine's effects were too good; if it leaked out, it could easily cause trouble.

"After all, I'm not as skilled as you, Senior Dai, in the Eight Gates Released Formation. In the future, you'll have to personally teach Kai more in this area." Mu Yue took out the Juesha.

He had already figured out how to handle the father-son duo of Might Guy. To get Might Guy's gold coins, he had to start with Might Duy; to make Might Duy obedient, he had to start with Might Guy.

Mu Yue had said it to this point, and Might Duy was not one to hesitate; he directly swallowed it in one gulp.

Might Duy soon felt a little warmth, which slowly spread throughout his body, until finally he felt a lightness in his body that he had never felt before.

Might Duy knew he owed Mu Yue another debt. This was definitely no simple secret medicine; the effects were too strong, almost immediate.

He felt that if he could take a few more of these secret medicines, his strength, which had long been difficult to improve, could rise again.

"Senior, try to stay home tomorrow. The Third Hokage should want to see your strength in person. If needed, I will send a shadow clone to find you." Mu Yue reminded him.

Might Duy nodded and gave a thumbs-up to indicate no problem.

"The tea is ready." Might Guy trotted over and poured tea for Mu Yue and Might Duy.

After drinking a cup, Mu Yue said his goodbyes and left.

"They really just chatted for a while." Might Guy scratched his head as he watched Mu Yue's receding figure.

"Dad, what did Teacher Mu Yue come to see you about?"

Might Guy asked curiously.

"Haha, it's a very powerful, very youthful thing. After it's done, it will definitely shock you, Kai." Might Duy laughed after drinking the hot tea.

Mu Yue had told him not to tell Might Guy until the result came out, saying that this matter wasn't one hundred percent certain to succeed, so as not to disappoint Might Guy if it didn't work out.

"What's so mysterious about it?" Might Guy became even more curious.

"There should be more coming."
