Chapter 203: Super Intern
After returning to Konoha, Mu Yue first took his disciples to the Hokage Building to turn in the mission.
"There was an unexpected development during this mission—we encountered three Kumogakure shinobi," Mu Yue said to the registration ninja.
The last time he went directly to see Sarutobi Hiruzen was because the matter was more serious; this time there were only three chūnin, not even a jōnin, so there was no need to bother the Hokage.
"Another unexpected development?" The registration ninja looked surprised.
He remembered that not long ago, Mu Yue and his team had an unexpected turn during a C-rank mission that escalated straight to A-rank, and now they'd had another incident—what awful luck.
They had only taken two C-rank missions in total, and both had gone sideways. He wasn't sure what to say.
Mu Yue handed over the scroll containing the three sealed Kumogakure shinobi to the registration ninja, along with a brief description of the enemy's strength.
"Let's classify it as a B-rank mission for now. I'll send these bodies for inspection," the registration ninja said after a moment's thought.
"As for the reward, I can only distribute the mission's base commission for now. Any additional compensation will have to wait until after the inspection to determine the amount."
Mu Yue nodded in agreement. He didn't really care about the money anyway; the secret medicines in the system shop weren't expensive.
Ever since he could buy training secret medicines, Mu Yue had been giving each of his disciples a dose every half month.
"Look, we can easily handle A-rank and B-rank missions now, so why not let us take missions above C-rank?" Obito started chatting with the registration ninja.
"I think you want me to lose my job," the registration ninja said, exasperated.
"You're not even a genin yet—you're a trainee. Being allowed to take C-rank missions is a special privilege granted by the Third Hokage. Other trainees can only do D-rank missions. Don't even think about higher ranks," the registration ninja said bluntly.
Rules were rules. Even if Mu Yue's squad really had the strength to complete B-rank missions, he couldn't assign them one. If they succeeded, he got no credit; if something went wrong, it would be his fault.
*Smack! *
Mu Yue apologized to the registration ninja, then knocked Obito on the head and said:
"Don't cause trouble for others. Doing C-rank missions is fine. So far, we haven't completed a single C-rank mission yet. Don't waste the opportunity the Third Hokage gave us."
Kakashi was speechless. It was true—they hadn't completed a single C-rank mission, because one had turned into an A-rank and the other into a B-rank.
Obito and Might Guy were probably the only ones who, without having graduated, had a record of completing an A-rank mission. Whether there would be anyone after them was uncertain, but there certainly hadn't been anyone before.
An A-rank mission—even Kakashi rarely got to handle missions of that level. Opportunities were few.
"Hehe, I was just thinking that doing such low-level missions would waste your strength, Mu Yue-sensei," Obito said, pretending to be considerate.
*Smack! *
Mu Yue answered with action that this method wouldn't work.
After leaving the Hokage Building, Mu Yue split the money equally among his disciples and said:
"No training together today. Take the day off. We'll gather as usual tomorrow. But if anyone really can't sit still and wants to train, you can go to the forest and train—I'll come by later."
The three disciples nodded. Kakashi had originally planned to go home and rest a bit—learning from Mu Yue was somewhat tiring; they trained almost every day, and even when not on a mission, they trained during downtime.
But seeing the direction Obito and Might Guy were heading, Kakashi ended up going to the Southern Forest to train too. If Obito could be that diligent, what excuse did he have to go home and rest?
Looking at Kakashi on his left and Might Guy on his right, Obito thought, *Oh no. Aren't they going to rest? Why are they in such a hurry to train? *
Obito was going to the Southern Forest only because that was where Rin Nohara trained at this time, and he wanted to chat with her about his mission experience.
But if both Might Guy and Kakashi were going to do extra training, then Obito definitely couldn't sit still. Might Guy he didn't care about, but Kakashi was his short-term target to challenge—Obito didn't want to lose to Kakashi.
"Haha! Everyone's youth is burning bright today! Youth means more training!" Might Guy laughed, giving them both a thumbs-up. Truly his good friends—their diligence was almost catching up to his.
Obito: "…"
Kakashi: "…"
On the other side, Mu Yue checked the gains from this mission.
【Disciple Might Guy worked hard to complete the commission mission, receiving growth reward chakra +200, with an additional reward of chakra +100 for being personally led by the teacher.】
【Disciple Uchiha Obito worked hard to complete the commission mission, receiving growth reward chakra +200, with an additional reward of chakra +100 for being personally led by the teacher.】
【Disciple Hatake Kakashi worked hard to complete the commission mission, receiving growth reward chakra +200, with an additional reward of chakra +100 for being personally led by the teacher.】
The total chakra gain from this mission was nine hundred points. Honestly, that was much more than Mu Yue had expected—he'd thought it would be at most four to five hundred.
That was because the enemy they encountered this time was far weaker than the elite Kumogakure squad from last time, which had included two jōnin, one of whom was even an elite jōnin with a bloodline limit.
The total reward for the last mission was actually just 1,350 points of chakra, only 450 points more than this one.
Without a doubt, if judging by the strength of the opponents, the rewards shouldn't differ that much.
Muyue showed a thoughtful expression and found one possibility.
Although the enemies in the last mission were very strong, basically all of them were dealt with by Muyue; the disciples themselves only defeated two ninja through their own strength.
And although the enemies encountered in this mission didn't even have a single Jonin, only three Chunin, all enemies were taken care of by the disciples, with Muyue only protecting from the shadows.
"The greater the role the disciples play during the mission, the higher the reward?" Muyue guessed.
If that were the case, even if he took on an S-rank mission, the final reward wouldn't be too exaggerated, because for S-rank missions, Obito and the others were destined to just be Muyue's accessories—the Muyue Squad would go 'gagga' killing spree in high-level missions: Muyue is responsible for the killing, while Obito and the others are responsible for the 'gagga'.
Then Muyue took a look at his current panel.
【Name: Hanyu Muyue】
【Chakra:】
The increase was quite good, already approaching 40,000. According to calculations before the data was updated using Xiao Ka's unit, it was a full 15.3 Xiao Ka, taking another step closer to his small goal of 50,000 chakra.
Muyue returned to his home in the main city district. Walking to the street where the house was located, Muyue didn't go directly inside but activated his Byakugan to take a look at Minato's house. Minato was not at home.
Then Muyue found a letter protected by a sealing technique barrier at his doorstep.
Muyue removed the barrier, took out the letter, and found that it was left for him by Minato. Muyue walked into the house while opening the envelope to read the contents.
