Chapter 1495: War Before Winter
At this moment, America.
At night, the British Captain Qiaozhi led a troop of men to the rear of Sanhao Zhendi, onto a small path they had found.
They lay in ambush there, quiet as could be.
In order not to alert the enemy, Captain Qiaozhi conducted a sweep for the Indians whose tracks had not been found that day.
He discovered their dwelling place, but it was completely empty.
Captain Qiaozhi pondered for a while, and only after confirming that these Indians had all left did he issue the order to lie in ambush along the path leading into Sanhao Zhendi.
Waiting for Captain Gelin's frontal assault.
The front of Sanhao Zhendi and No. 2 Position.
At a position about three hundred meters from Sanhao Zhendi, Captain Gelin had long since dug trenches overnight in the area countless meters ahead, waiting for the sky to turn pale.
A burst of cannon fire!
Breaking the silent night, the final war between the British and the French before winter began.
The Long Flame Cannon had a very long firing range, and accuracy could be fully guaranteed within three hundred meters.
In half an hour, five Long Flame Cannons fired a total of thirty cannonballs.
All of them struck the front line of Sanhao Zhendi accurately and without error.
Under the dim sky, the great fire burning at Sanhao Zhendi, the thick smoke blotting out the sky and sun, and the flying stones blasted into the air all indicated one thing: the effect of this bombardment was very significant.
He did not see the French Cavalry charging out from the dust and mist.
Captain Gelin gave a cold smile, believing that these thirty cannonballs had caused immense damage to the French.
But this smugness did not last long on Captain Gelin's face.
Soon he heard the sound of the Frenchmen's horse hooves, breaking through the dust and mist, rolling toward them.
As if Captain Gelin had anticipated it, he had long since dug trenches in the ground to ambush the Frenchmen's advance.
The French Cavalry came on aggressively, moving at high speed under the artillery fire; artillery fire could pose a certain threat, but it was difficult to threaten cavalry in open terrain.
And this was precisely open terrain.
But Captain Gelin did not give up on using the advantage of the cannons to suppress the French Cavalry.
He had to hold the attention of these Frenchmen to buy space for Captain Qiaozhi, who was preparing to launch a sneak attack.
Just as the French Cavalry was about to reach the British trenches, the French Cavalry suddenly turned to retreat.
Captain Gelin was stunned, not understanding what these French Cavalry were planning to do.
But he absolutely could not let these Frenchmen retreat; the battle for Sanhao Zhendi had only just begun.
If these cavalrymen went back, they would bring great trouble to Captain Qiaozhi.
Captain Gelin had no time to think further: "Switch to Long Spears."
"Advance the battle line!"
He absolutely could not let these French Cavalry go back, but advancing the battle line meant abandoning the place he relied on for defense.
The first troop of British Soldiers switched to Long Spears and advanced the battle line.
Seeing this scene, the French Cavalry wore very mocking expressions; in their view, this move by the British was simply courting death.
The French Cavalry launched their charge once again.
The first troop of British Soldiers held Long Spears and Shields, holding the Shield in their left hand and the spear in their right, half-crouching on the ground, their bodies protected by the massive Shields.
The Long Spears in their right hands were all raised upright.
Defending against the French Cavalry's charge.
"Cover their eyes!"
The French Cavalry immediately covered their War Horses' eyes with black cloth; this was to prevent the War Horses from feeling fear after seeing the British Long Spears.
The French Cavalry also charged with Long Spears, only the Long Spears in their hands were nearly two meters long.
A bit longer than the Long Spears of the British Infantry.
The War Horses closed in!
Captain Gelin shouted loudly: "Thrust!"
The Shield Infantry heard the order, and with their right hands holding
the Long Spears, they thrust out violently.
The French War Horse cavalry crashed into the hard Shields without fear of death, emitting a dull thud!
Bang!
Under the frenzied impact of the French Cavalry, the British Shield Infantry's defensive line was quickly torn apart.
But the French Cavalry also paid a price for this; some War Horses suffered fatal wounds during this collision.
The attack angle of the British Shield formation was very tricky; although the Shield Infantry could not see, their attacks could strike the bellies of the War Horses with great accuracy.
However, not all British Soldiers were able to land a hit.
Even if they could strike the lower belly of a French War Horse, they would still endure a powerful impact.
Under the heavy impact of the War Horses and their hooves, these soldiers equipped with heavy Shields were very likely to be killed in a single blow.
In the first clash, the British were at a disadvantage, but they also managed to pin down the cavalry.
The French Cavalry also did not advance further because of the trenches.
But just at this moment.
A loud boom rang out.
A cannon from the Long Flame suddenly exploded, and Captain Gelin in the rear was shocked.
He had just seen that from a distance of three hundred meters, the French position had fired a cannonball.
And that cannonball had landed accurately and without error on this Long Flame Cannon.
At that moment, this Longyan Cannon was being loaded with a cannonball.
With just a single shot, the French blew this Longyan Cannon and its ammunition into the sky.
The violent explosion shattered this Longyan Cannon, and one of the flying shrapnel fragments grazed Captain Gelin's cheek.
Captain Gelin touched the warm, bright red blood oozing from his face and suddenly looked up toward the French Sanhao Zhendi.
"They have already equipped the Longyan Cannon!"
Captain Gelin suddenly remembered the two Longyan Cannons that the French had intercepted which should have belonged to them; his expression turned terrifyingly grim as he ordered: "Aim at the position that just fired, and take out their Longyan Cannon!"
"Yes!"
The Artillery immediately adjusted the direction and range, and a cannonball was fired with a boom.
It landed accurately and without error into the position where the French had just launched their artillery strike.
With a loud boom, dust filled the sky.
That place had been destroyed; Captain Gelin sneered, one hand covering his bleeding cheek, the other using a Telescope to look at the place that had turned into ruins, and the wound on his face seemed to hurt less as he secretly said: What Britain has obtained, you French shall not have.
But suddenly, Captain Gelin's pupils shrank sharply, and he exclaimed: "How is this possible!"
"Run!"
Before the words had even faded, Captain Gelin fled, while that artilleryman had not yet reacted.
A violent explosion rang out.
This Longyan Cannon also became shattered and broken.
Captain Gelin dove to the ground at the moment of the explosion, which is how he escaped unharmed, with no shrapnel hitting him.
However, that artilleryman was torn to pieces, and a complete corpse could no longer be found.
On Captain Gelin's blood-stained face was a look of terror, and he kept muttering: "This is impossible... this is impossible!"
"It is absolutely impossible for a Cannon to move that fast; it must be the other Longyan Cannon the French captured!"
Captain Gelin blankly raised his hand to look toward the French position; the location where the opponent had just fired was not far from the position where they had been blown up.
When he saw through the Telescope the exact same Frenchmen as before, now moving quickly while carrying the Longyan Cannon, the wound on his face throbbed with pain.
An invisible force seemed to be gripping his heart.
