Chapter 1790: The Ball of Destiny

~7 min read 1,329 words

The noble Miss Kamila was just as sexy and beautiful as Kaine had previously described; her low-cut black gauze dress was like a curtain of night, and the bright moon rose from the mystery of her half-hidden cleavage, shimmering brilliantly under the reflection of the human lights.

There was no gentleman who was not conquered and moved by this bright moon; it was a beautiful scene bestowed by the heavens, and even Bonaparte, sitting far away, felt a sense of respect.

The average standard of European women was not as high as one might imagine, and Miss Kamila's bright moon could be considered a peak standing tall in the human world.

"How much can a woman really squander? I mean, even if she builds many gardens, and no matter how gorgeous the jewelry on her clothes is, how much of the national treasury can it really account for? It is wrong to attribute all mistakes to a lady who loves to dress up."

Miss Kamila's small voice was as wonderful and moving as a blue-headed rock thrush in the forest, and her sorrowful and pitiful appearance made the hearts of the surrounding gentlemen burn, wishing they could hold this delicate flower bud from the moon against their chests.

If a man were to say these words, he would surely be despised by everyone; the arrogant French did not have much affection for that Austrian Princess, and while the nobles were slightly better, the resentment of the commoner class could flow right out of their eyes.

But the tone flowing from Miss Kamila's moving little mouth was as sweet as honey, and at this moment, the noble youths who had no need to use their brains had become like grass on a wall.

"Ah, yes, yes, I agree with what Miss Kamila said; one cannot blame men's incompetence on women, it is too ridiculous."

"Men should also have a bit of sensibility; flowers and swords cannot just be swords. Just like a beautiful woman like Miss Kamila, she should not have to bear the pressure of men."

The crowd clamored in agreement; no one was stupid enough to debate national finance with a canary-like airhead at this time.

Kaine listened for a while, then squeezed in with a face full of smiles, "But this is thanks to her having a good husband—that king who cannot be considered successful, yet one cannot deny that he is a man who loves his family."

Kamila was holding her forehead to express her sorrow, and upon hearing these words, she turned her gaze toward Kaine.

This fellow truly had an upright appearance that could make a woman feel close to him.

However, a noble interrupted with dissatisfaction, "Are you serious?"

The privileged Noble Class at the ball

often discussed or even satirized the King and Queen as a matter of routine; everyone knew that His Majesty the King was a soft-hearted and kind-hearted pushover.

As for Queen Marie, she was a greedy and extravagant woman; likewise, neither of them had any ability, and they could not see which class was actually managing this country.

If there were those in later generations willing to pity Louis XVI, it is estimated that not many would pity the Deficit Lady; the greatest positive evaluation of her in history was merely that one should not attribute all mistakes to the squandering of one woman.

The financial problems of France were clearly not caused by the squandering of one woman, but she was the undisputed target.

Kaine said without showing any fear, "Of course, at the very least, the seeds of conflict were sown in the previous generation. The degree of France's victory in the war against Austria was inversely proportional to its diplomatic failure; the French resentment toward Austria increased day by day, and the Austrian Princess was naturally the best candidate to focus class contradictions—a scapegoat for the conflict between the Noble Class and the poor."

Kamila could not help but nod frequently upon hearing this; this Deficit Lady was merely a victim of politics. Now, when the nobles discussed her, they would more or less include sarcasm, but Kamila, being a woman herself, felt it was unjust for her.

"You truly have profound insights."

Kaine smiled understandingly, "Just one man's opinion."

He held a glass of wine and politely raised it toward Kamila.

"I have heard that your singing voice is as intoxicating as a nymph's; now that I hear your voice, I imagine how moving the scene must be when you are singing."

There is no one who does not like to hear praise; Kamila was clearly made to blush by this straightforward compliment, "You really know how to talk; it is not that good, I just like to sing."

Now the surrounding men were not satisfied.

Everyone was beating around the bush and bragging, so how did this guy pop out of the crowd to cut in line? Although everyone was thinking of winning the Beauty over, one still had to respect the order of arrival.

"I know you, Kaine of the Slov family; your family is an Austrian military-industrial tycoon. I even attended your engagement banquet with Miss Ingram at the time; your fiancée is truly a virtuous and kind Beauty."

A man exposed Kaine's background, and the expressions of those around him, including Kamila, changed

in an instant.

Kaine's handsome face stiffened for a moment; he could not deny the legitimacy of his lineage.

Another man laughed contemptuously: "Austrians might not understand the upper class of France; it is better for you to speak less on such matters."

Kamila shook her head and raised her glass to Kaine, "Mr. Kaine is a gentleman; I toast to you."

Kaine breathed a sigh of relief; fortunately, Kamila was not repulsed by his identity. He had almost failed at the last hurdle, and as for those few men nearby who were jealous, he naturally ignored them as if they were under the table.

Thus, Kaine pressed on, rattling off a few humorous jokes that made Kamila tremble with laughter, and the atmosphere became even more heated.

Bonaparte, watching from the side, felt like yawning; what a mess, it would be better to spend this effort on learning.

However, a familiar fragrance suddenly drifted by, making Bonaparte's heartbeat quicken a few beats.

"Kamila is just that popular; she is the center of attention everywhere, and there will always be men spinning around her."

The clear, sweet, and delicate voice did not sound any worse to Bonaparte than that Kamila's, and Sabrina's noble air was not so easy to approach; perhaps her background was the reason she did not have men spinning around her.

Sabrina had snuck over here again; clearly, this was a corner not easily discovered, and the little swan, having tasted the sweetness just now, seemed unsatisfied. She smoothed the skirt behind her hips, sat down, and began to pick and choose from the desserts the waiter had just brought over.

"May I take it that you are jealous?"

Bonaparte could not help but joke.

Sabrina's face turned slightly red, then she picked up a piece of fruit with a toothpick and stuffed it into her mouth, "If that is what you think, then so be it. I am indeed not as charming as Kamila."

But this straightforward personality was very much to Bonaparte's liking.

Wonderful music flowed slowly from the ballroom again.

People who had rested for a while began to take their dance partners again, walking in groups of three or five into the dance floor, dancing gracefully in the light and shadow after the crystal glasses had blurred their vision. Bonaparte saw that Kaine had successfully dragged Miss Kamila's little hand onto the stage, the smugness on his face like a victorious rooster.

Unfortunately, after Sabrina arrived, Bonaparte did not pay any attention to what happened afterward, but he had to admit that this kid really had a way with things.
