Chapter 1954: Disguised as Refugees
Following the orders of Old General Li, the Longyan army dispatched a camouflage squad to infiltrate the refugees.
This camouflage squad brought weapons with them.
And several Muskets.
The captain of this squad, He Dong, led his team members; because they had guns and also carried a small amount of food, they were willing to share.
These refugees, who had been hungry for a long time, quickly accepted them.
"Brother, where did you get this food from?"
"You look like Longyan, did you really not swipe this stuff from inside Xini Cheng?"
He Dong smiled and replied: "You have been staying here for so long; do you think the situation inside Xini Cheng is any good?"
The refugees who had never been inside the city shook their heads, but they felt that Xini Cheng, such a large city, must surely have the food they needed.
It was just that the people inside would not come out and would not save them!
He Dong sighed: "You think there is food inside, but the people inside think there is food outside."
"I came out from inside, but the gun in my hand and this food were certainly not taken from inside."
He Dong patted the pouch in his hand, as well as his Musket.
The refugees swallowed their saliva as they looked at the pouch, but seeing that He Dong's hand never left his Musket, they could only lower their heads in fear.
"Let me tell you, all these things of mine came from the French!"
"I went to the port once and got these; if you want to have something to eat, you have to go to the port!"
Upon hearing the word "port," this refugee's eyes were filled with terror; for him, the port was not a good place.
That was where the French, who had taken everything from them, were gathered!
They also had guns in their hands.
The refugee was clearly afraid of these French, but watching He Dong take another small piece of food from his pouch and put it into his mouth, making chewing sounds.
Hearing this made his own mouth move, yet he could not taste even the slightest flavor.
The acid secreted in his stomach made him even hungrier.
He could only keep swallowing his saliva, trying to curb his hunger in this way.
But it clearly did not have much effect.
Finally, no longer able to endure the hunger, he gathered his courage and asked: "Will you go to the port again? Please take me next time; I promise I won't hold you back!"
Hearing these words, He Dong revealed a smile and said with feigned gravity: "We will go, but we don't have enough manpower right now. If you can find more people, that would be the best thing."
Hearing that there was hope, the refugee was like a puppet being manipulated, desperately spreading this news.
Soon, all the refugees staying under Xini Cheng were discussing one thing.
Whether to go to the port to find food.
Whether to go and kill those French!
This matter quickly spread like a virus among the refugees.
"It's death staying here anyway, might as well go and make a desperate gamble!"
"Anyway, there are people charging in the front; I'm just going to pick up the scraps!"
"It's fine, everything will be fine!"
Countless people came up with countless ideas; the thought of going to the port to find food clung to them like a curse.
After a few days, He Dong saw these refugees developing this matter more and more intensely.
It was as if it were a powder keg, ready to explode at any moment.
He Dong believed that the time was now ripe; seeing all this, He Dong felt that now was the best moment!
At this very moment, he led the Longyan Squad and stood out; he would lead the transformation of this war!
"Spread the word that we will launch an attack on the port tonight."
Soon, this news acted like a fuse, igniting and detonating the emotions of the refugees!
Upon learning that someone was going to take action tonight,
the refugees scrambled to act.
They found everything and anything that could be used as a weapon.
Yet no one noticed that the number of these weapons had suddenly increased; almost everyone had a knife in their hand.
Some even dug out Muskets and Bullets.
By the time night fell, they did not even need He Dong to lead them.
These refugees, who wanted to obtain food and were driven by hunger, set off without any concealment.
The mighty army of refugees numbered a full one or two hundred thousand people.
If this were a military unit, such force would be enough to change the battlefield, but this was not a military unit.
It was a crowd of refugees!
In such a massive crowd that had never undergone training or command, the only thing driving them was the desire to obtain food.
They were nothing more than prisoners driven by desire.
He Dong and his teammates also joined in this mighty expedition.
On the walls of Xini Cheng, Old General Li watched such a force set out.
For Xini Cheng, this was a good thing; the siege that had lasted for over a month was finally over, and without these refugees, their lives would be much easier.
But Old General Li's face was gloomy; he looked at the empty space below the city and did not say a word for a long time.
Xini Cheng's temporary predicament was resolved thanks to these refugees.
But Xini Cheng's predicament also came from these refugees.
After today, it is unknown how many of the French troops and these refugees will remain.
But the outcome will surely be extremely tragic.
Old General Li sighed and said nothing more.
He turned around, no longer looking at the battlefield that might soon appear, and said in a deep voice to his subordinate adjutant: "Open the city gates; we need to collect more grain and forage while those refugees are away."
"Bring all the refugees outside into the city; we need a more powerful force."
The adjutant acknowledged the order; he was not the least bit surprised by such an order from Old General Li.
Soon, Old General Li's men left the city to search for more food, and at the same time, those refugees were all brought into the city by him; the expansion of the Dragon Flame Army gave these refugees the opportunity to enter the military.
Many, many people joined the Dragon Flame Army of Australia in order to survive.
Meanwhile, on the other side, the group of refugees attacking the port tonight.
He Dong fired the first shot, they followed closely behind, and soon launched an attack on the French forces.
But just as He Dong had anticipated, although their force was large in number, their equipment was not refined, they had no training, and they only had desire.
Although such a force did achieve some results.
There was, however, even more death.
Under the circumstances where their weapons were not refined, He Dong still led them to take a town where a French force was stationed.
This town was mostly inhabited by French people and was considered relatively wealthy, even in the midst of such a war.
This town had not encountered many attacks.
But under the trampling of the great refugee army, the town was destroyed in less than a single night.
The French force guarding this town did not have many troops, only one thousand men; although they exhausted their ammunition and slaughtered a swathe of the refugee force.
Yet in the face of such absolute numerical superiority, they were quickly swallowed up by the refugees, becoming the first sacrificial offerings of this force.
Everything in the town drove these refugees mad; they burned, killed, and looted everywhere, and without any constraints, they only knew how to be driven by their own desires.
