Chapter 1958: Successful Rescue
Bang! Bang! Bang...
Leonard looked at another section of the French Army's defensive line, at the French troops appearing on the horizon.
These troops were very unfamiliar, but he knew the person charging at the very front all too well.
"It's Harris!"
"It's the General, he has come to support us, brothers, charge!"
The troops led by Leonard were invigorated, and they launched a charge without any fear of death.
The French Army, however, was stunned.
Attacked from both the front and the rear, they had no choice but to divert forces to resist the other unit.
They had launched their attack from atop temporarily constructed walls.
Below, there were also anti-Cavalry obstacles specifically built to stop horses; standing on the city wall facing the Cavalry charge of Leonard's troops, they would not be harmed.
The construction of such structures could directly render the Cavalry's charge useless.
After all, most of Leonard's Cavalry held Long Spears in their hands, not Muskets.
They had no way to cause them harm.
But this suddenly appearing unit not only had Muskets, but even had Cannons for siege warfare.
These temporarily constructed walls of theirs had no way at all to withstand the enemy's Cannons; they could not serve any purpose whatsoever.
One could even say that they were just like targets.
Facing the other unit, the French commander could only frantically order other troops to go out and meet the battle.
Their troops were fighting in two separate groups; the French Army, which had originally held a great advantage, was now at a disadvantage.
They were like a hot dog being squeezed between two units.
The battlefield situation had changed, but the fighting was extremely intense.
Whether it was Leonard, Harris, or Nashadier, all were very clear that they had to end this battle quickly.
The mutiny of Leonard's troops was already an indisputable fact.
The French Army must have already realized it by now, otherwise they would not have strengthened their defenses so quickly; in a little while, reinforcements for the French Army might arrive.
They had to end the battle before that.
On Leonard's side of the battlefield, the anti-Cavalry obstacles and the city wall were playing a fairly good role.
But this situation did not last long before Harris's Cannons blasted the city wall to pieces.
The breach that appeared in the shattered city wall was an opportunity for Leonard.
As long as they occupied the breach in the city wall, they could quickly pass through the defensive line.
This was a checkpoint temporarily established by the French Army; it was not complete, having only one city wall, and there were no military camps behind it.
But it was still very difficult for Leonard to pass through the breach blasted into the city wall; their troops had no way to launch a charge at this moment.
Although Nashadier's troops were attacking from the other side, pinning down their forces, it was clear that the French Army's commander had already made plans.
He was determined to take them out first, so the firepower attacking Leonard was even more ferocious!
But what the French Army did not expect was that the firepower of Nashadier's troops was not the least bit inferior.
He saw that the troops Nashadier brought had fifteen Cannons, which were erupting with intense bombardment at this moment.
At this distance and with this precision, one could say the hit rate of the fifteen Cannons was somewhat pitiful, but they could not withstand the desperate, relentless offensive trend of the fifteen Cannons.
Under such a method of attack, the French troops were beaten until they had no ability to fight back at all.
The French commander had no choice but to split off a portion of his own forces to face the attack from Nashadier's troops directly.
If this firepower point was not suppressed, the French defensive line would soon be crushed.
Once the firepower here lessened, it gave Leonard's troops a chance to counterattack.
Leonard on the other side seized the opportunity to rush toward that
breach that had been blasted open.
The French commander urged anxiously: "Stop them!"
But it was already too late; Leonard's troops had already passed through the breach.
The breach was occupied, and the situation was reversed; the cold weapons that had originally been unable to be put to use were now directly facing the French Army atop the city wall.
These cold weapons were finally able to be put to use; although Muskets were easy to use in close-quarters combat.
Under the iron hooves of the Cavalry's War Horses, inside the city wall where there was no room for maneuver, there was clearly no way at all.
Soon, Leonard's troops occupied the entire city wall, and the pressure on Nashadier's troops instantly lessened a great deal.
Facing such a pincer attack, failure for the French Army was inevitable.
Both sides were Cavalry; without the anti-Cavalry obstacles, the city wall, and those Muskets, the French Army was just a group of bugs easily crushed.
Cavalry have a near-crushing ability against infantry units that have lost their support.
However, after Leonard and Nashadier's troops converged, they did not continue to linger in the fight, but instead withdrew from the battlefield at the fastest speed.
It was not very cost-effective to wipe out all the French Army within this defensive line right now.
First of all, they did not know when the French Army's reinforcements would arrive; if they came quickly, they would fall into a very dangerous situation.
Therefore, retreating now was their best choice.
Without making too much of a stop, their troops immediately retreated.
But just at this moment.
The French reinforcement troops led by Smith had already arrived.
Leonard glanced at Harris and the man beside him whom he had never seen before; his face was written with the word "ferocious."
Even his own General, Harris, seemed to be using his eyes to ask for his opinion.
Nashadier looked at the War Horses appearing in the distance; the ones leading the team were the French Army.
"Retreat!"
As soon as his voice fell, that unit helping Leonard immediately withdrew.
They did not linger any longer.
Leonard looked at Harris, only to find him immediately turning around to follow that strange general and retreat.
Leonard was stunned for a moment, then hurriedly led his troops to follow.
They galloped at high speed under the setting sun, with corpses strewn across the ground behind them.
There were their own men, but even more were men from the French troops.
This time, Leonard was only able to lead his troops to break out from within thanks to Harris and his men.
Watching the troops about to withdraw, Smith shouted urgently, "Quick, quick!"
"Absolutely cannot let them escape!"
But the distance between them was already growing further and further.
Smith led his troops in pursuit, running a very long distance after them.
Not until that unit could no longer be seen.
Only then did Smith stop, looking at the sun setting in the distance, his teeth clenched in anger.
The ones who escaped this time were a very elite Cavalry unit; for their French troops, this would absolutely be a major loss.
In the future, it would very likely pose a major danger to them, but it was too late to say anything now.
They had already entered the sphere of influence of Nashadier; if they continued forward, they would very likely encounter an attack from the other side.
Now was not yet the time to start a direct conflict with Nashadier.
Gazing at the stars ahead, Smith could only say coldly, "Go back!"
"Prepare the defenses, be ready for battle at any time!"
This time Nashadier had gained a very elite Cavalry unit; Smith had a premonition that it might not be long before their troops would continue to expand toward the region where the Wahala Tribe was located, and he had to make preparations for this!
