Chapter 179: A Deadly Move

~7 min read 1,335 words

Gu Wenyan could tell that Gu Yeting cared a great deal about this matter now, hoping that he could be a brother she could rely on — that kind of role.

But now, with Gu Yeting saying such things to Gu Wenyan, she wouldn't take it to heart at all.

So she merely smiled faintly and said, "Keep working at it. One day you might just get what you wish for."

Gu Yeting wasn't displeased. He knew all of this was his own doing, and now whatever attitude his sister took toward him was something he deserved.

It was the price he himself had to bear.

The few of them quickly returned from the lake to the shore. There were quite a lot of fish in the lake, but after playing for a while, the young masters had all lost interest. Gu Wenyan hadn't been all that interested to begin with either.

When they came back, Gu Mianmian was by Ye Yiwen's side, chatting with her to cheer her up. Seeing them return, she immediately said, "Brothers. Sister, dinner's ready. If you hadn't come back soon, I was about to swim out to find you!"

"Aren't we back now?" Gu Yeting glanced at Gu Mianmian, then shifted his gaze away. "What's for dinner tonight?"

Gu Mianmian quickly answered, "Wang Ma said she's making her specialty — sweet and sour spare ribs, and pork knuckle… all your favorites."

Gu Yeting was something of a foodie. Hearing there were dishes he liked, he immediately strode into the kitchen. "Wang Ma, you've worked hard tonight. Do you need us to lend a hand?"

"Third Young Master, don't joke around like that. Just go out and wait for me! I can handle the kitchen on my own!"

Wang Ma was a diligent sort, so she quickly took on all the work in the kitchen herself.

Gu Yeting came back out again, laughing. "We're in for a treat tonight."

"Brother, you eat Wang Ma's cooking every day. Once she retires, you'll never get to eat it again!"

"True enough… while I still can, I should eat more of it."

Gu Mianmian scooted closer. "Don't worry, Brother. I'm already learning to cook from Wang Ma. In the future, I can make delicious food too…"

Gu Wenyan noticed the eagerness to please in Gu Mianmian's eyes and deliberately said, "Instead of spending your thoughts on what tasty things to make, you'd do better to spend your time on something more meaningful."

Gu Mianmian pouted. "That is something meaningful too. Making my brothers happy is very important to me…"

Gu Mianmian was a little hurt. "Maybe to you, Sister, this just isn't something you care about, so you think my way of thinking is unambitious. But is there anything wrong with caring about your own family? There shouldn't be, right?"

Gu Wenyan gave a cold little smile and quickly changed the subject. She had no mind to argue with Gu Mianmian right now — that energy was better spent on something more meaningful…

For instance, deliberately telling Gu Mianmian just how precious the gift Gu Yeting had given her today was.

She rose and looked at Gu Yeting. "I'm going to put the gift you gave me in my room first. It's worth several million, after all — I can't just carelessly lose it."

"What if I do lose it… and you ask me to pay for it? What would I do if I can't afford to?"

Gu Yeting smiled casually. "What could you possibly not afford? Besides, would I be the petty sort who'd make you pay?"

Gu Wenyan shrugged. "Who knows? What if…"

"Don't worry. There'll be plenty more gifts like this in the future. What's this one little thing? I would absolutely never do something like that."

Gu Wenyan nodded. "Alright, I'll take you at your word for now. But no matter what, it's the thought that counts. I can't lose it — that would be too unfair to you."

Gu Mianmian, hearing their conversation, felt hatred rise in her eyes once more.

Gu Yeting had given Gu Wenyan such an expensive gift! How long had it been since he'd even thought of her?

Even if giving Gu Wenyan gifts was his own freedom — what about her?

Was she simply not important in his eyes at all? Had he just forgotten her… and would never again, like in the past… keep her matters close to his heart!

Gu Mianmian thought to herself — she couldn't wait any longer. She had to deal with Gu Wenyan tonight. Otherwise, what would she have left in the future? She would lose everything she had now, and there'd be no future at all…

What she wanted from staying in the Gu Family wasn't just this much. She wanted to become the most important sister in their hearts! She had to get everything she wanted…

Seeing the change in Gu Mianmian's eyes, Gu Wenyan knew that what she'd said today had worked.

That's more like it. How could she let Gu Mianmian feel at ease?

She had to make Gu Mianmian jealous, make her resentful, make her lose her reason — only then would she show more of her true colors…

For dinner, everything was cooked by Wang Ma herself. The food looked, smelled, and tasted wonderful — the very sight of it made one look forward to it.

"I also specially made some glutinous rice balls, one bowl for each of you. Eat them to warm up a bit."

So saying, Wang Ma brought the glutinous rice balls she'd dished out from the kitchen and set it before them.

Gu Wenyan looked at the white, plump glutinous rice balls in her bowl and could already imagine they would taste good.

Gu Yeting quickly ate one and nodded. "Whatever Wang Ma makes, it's always good no matter what it tastes like."

"Third Young Master, as long as you like it. Eldest Young Master, Second Young Master, and Miss Wen Yan… you eat too. See if it suits your taste? If it doesn't, I'll go change the filling for you… today besides sesame, there's also…"

"No need. This is fine, it's quite good."

So saying, Gu Wenyan prepared to take a bite.

Both Wang Ma and Gu Mianmian's gazes turned toward her at the same time, then quickly shifted away, as if they didn't particularly care.

But Gu Wenyan noticed.

"Oh… but I feel my stomach's a bit off today. I'll eat it a little later."

So saying, Gu Wenyan set the glutinous rice balls aside again.

Gu Mianmian visibly pressed her lips together, a hint of displeasure on her face. Wang Ma, however, remained composed as ever. "Alright, if your stomach's upset, don't eat it for now. I've also stewed some soup here — you could have some soup first to warm your stomach."

So saying, Wang Ma went back to the kitchen and came out with a bowl of soup. She really had thought of everything.

This bowl of soup, Gu Wenyan had no reason to refuse. "Thank you. I'll eat the meal first, and have the soup after."

After Gu Wenyan finished her meal and had just set down her chopsticks, Wang Ma immediately asked, "Have some more soup, Miss? Your stomach's not well — you really need to take better care of it."

"Oh, right, I almost forgot…"

This time, Gu Wenyan didn't refuse, and took a few sips of the soup in front of them.

She wiped her mouth with her hand and nodded. "Very good. Wang Ma's cooking skills are getting better and better. Now I understand why you've been able to stay in the Gu Family for so many years — who wouldn't like the food you make?"

"Miss Gu, you're too kind. What I make just happens to be what the young masters like, and the Madam as well…"

Gu Wenyan said meaningfully, "In the future, you may have one more person who likes it — me."
