Chapter 55: Gu Mianmian Pulls the Rug Out from Under Them

~7 min read 1,350 words

Gu Mianmian had no idea when she had bitten her own lips until they bled, nor did she notice.

By the time she came back to herself, she had been standing in place for a long while, so long that her body had gone stiff.

In that instant, Gu Mianmian realized deeply that she could not go on like this. Once Gu Wenyan was given more time, everyone in the entire Gu Family would soon revolve around Gu Wenyan…

Even her third brother, who doted on her the most right now, might change his attitude in the future and be led astray by Gu Wenyan.

She had to do something to win back everything she had lost!

Gu Wenyan paid no attention to Gu Mianmian. After returning to her room, she found time to go online and check what people on the internet were saying about the Gu Family now.

Although a family like theirs was not exposed in the media every day, there was still plenty of discussion about them.

Most of the focus right now was on the matter concerning Gu Mianmian. Clearly, to netizens, the fact that this Gu Family young lady had publicly apologized and done something so unimaginable was indeed a hot topic worth debating.

She watched the online reviews of Gu Mianmian grow worse and worse, and the corner of her mouth curved up slightly. This was rather nice—at the very least, she did not need to do anything on her own to keep the negative talk about Gu Mianmian going forever.

It was a tremendous blow to Gu Mianmian's state of mind.

Just as Gu Wenyan was about to go to sleep, she suddenly heard an extremely noisy commotion outside, as if someone were shouting for help.

"Somebody come!"

"Help! Second Miss, Second Miss, what's happened to you!"

"Second Miss, wake up!"

Gu Wenyan frowned, quickly got out of bed, threw on a coat, and went out.

The mother in the room was also woken up. Ye Yiwen hurried out and immediately saw a servant shouting anxiously: "Madam! Second Miss has tried to kill herself! Please come quickly!"

Ye Yiwen's face changed drastically, and she rushed into Gu Mianmian's room. Gu Wenyan followed behind, her steps unhurried.

After a few steps, she saw Gu Mianmian lying on the bed, pale-faced and unconscious.

A pill bottle lay on the floor, with a few pills still spilled out of it.

In an instant, the entire Gu Family was thrown into chaos. Servants hurriedly called an ambulance, and Ye Yiwen kept calling out to Gu Mianmian.

Others were notifying the three young masters of the Gu Family, as well as their Head of the Family, to come back.

Gu Wenyan picked up the pills from the floor and took a look, recognizing them as some kind of sleeping pill.

She raised an eyebrow and pressed down the curve of her lips. Gu Mianmian actually… dared to sacrifice herself like this.

At this moment, no one was paying attention to Gu Wenyan. Soon the ambulance arrived, and Gu Mianmian was rushed to the hospital.

Gu Wenyan stayed by her mother's side and said softly to comfort her: "Don't worry. She was brought here in time—she will definitely be saved."

Ye Yiwen wept in self-reproach: "It's all my fault. If I had paid more attention to your sister, she wouldn't have done this…"

When Gu Mianmian tried to kill herself, she also left behind a suicide note. The contents of the note were her repentance for everything she had done before.

She felt she had no right to face her family again and could only make up for her mistakes in this way.

Ye Yiwen clutched the suicide note tightly, nearly crying herself into a faint. Gu Wenyan knew nothing she said would help at this point, so she silently patted her mother's back, her expression still calm.

Gu Jue and Gu Yechen arrived at the hospital; Gu Mianmian had already been taken in for a gastric lavage.

Ye Yiwen waited in the corridor. When she saw them arrive, she immediately threw herself into her husband's arms and sobbed: "It's all our fault! How could we have driven Mianmian to such a point? How desperate must she have been to choose to end her life like this…"

Gu Yechen comforted his mother briefly, then walked up to Gu Wenyan and asked in a suppressed voice: "How is she?"

Gu Wenyan shook her head: "The situation is still uncertain, but she was brought here in time, so there shouldn't be too much of a problem."

Gu Yechen clenched his hand into a fist, furrowed his brow tightly, and looked toward the ward, his expression beyond words.

Gu Wenyan knew that Gu Yechen must also be blaming himself at this moment.

He certainly would never have expected Gu Mianmian to try to kill herself. To him, even though Gu Mianmian had done wrong, she was still his sister.

A sister he meant to treat seriously.

But now… Gu Mianmian had actually chosen such an extreme way to end her life. For Gu Yechen, it was bound to be a tremendous emotional blow.

Gu Yefeng and Gu Yeting arrived almost at the same time. Gu Yeting's face was terrifyingly dark. After checking on Gu Mianmian's condition, he turned his head and glared fiercely at Gu Wenyan, as if blaming her entirely for Gu Mianmian's suicide.

Gu Wenyan's expression did not change; she met his gaze calmly.

Gu Yeting gave a cold snort and went off to ask the doctor about the situation.

Gu Yefeng kept his eyes fixed tightly on the ward door, his cold, clear expression concealing all his inner turmoil.

Gu Wenyan's heart stirred. As she walked over to him, she happened to hear him muttering to himself: "I'm sorry, it's big brother's fault…"

Gu Wenyan also glanced at her father; his eyes seemed to have reddened.

Gu Mianmian's move of pulling the rug out from under them was indeed brilliant—in an instant, it pulled the scattered hearts of the Gu Family back together around her.

Gu Wenyan stood quietly to the side, waiting for Gu Mianmian's treatment to end.

The doctor soon gave them good news.

Much as Gu Yechen had just said, because she had been brought in in time, Gu Mianmian's condition was not too bad.

After some simple treatment, she could go home after a few days in the hospital.

The Gu Family members crowded into the ward. Gu Mianmian was still unconscious and had not woken up, but the three young masters of the Gu Family were already utterly distressed and full of self-blame. They surrounded her, and in that short time, there was no room in their eyes for anyone else.

Ye Yiwen suddenly noticed Gu Wenyan and sighed: "It's late. You should go home first. We'll talk after she wakes up."

Gu Wenyan agreed: "Alright. You should also go back and rest soon. As for my brothers… don't let them tire themselves out too much either."

Ye Yiwen knew that Gu Wenyan had no real affection for Gu Mianmian, and with the conflicts between them, it was hard to expect Gu Wenyan to feel much heartache or pity.

So she did not make any excessive demands.

When Gu Wenyan left, no one seemed to notice her either.

She glanced at the ward surrounded by people, walked out of the hospital alone, and suddenly missed Bao Sihan terribly.

At that moment, Bao Sihan was still busy in his study. Lan Tian had finally managed to beg the butler for a chance, and brought in freshly brewed coffee to serve him.

"Head of the Family, your coffee is here."

The man focused on his work did not even look up, his sharp expression unchanged in the slightest: "Set it down."

Lan Tian gazed at him with infatuation: "Head of the Family, about what happened today…"

Before she could finish speaking, Bao Sihan's phone suddenly rang. He answered, said a few words, and his expression changed. He immediately stood up and strode toward the stairs.
