Chapter 6: One Blinder Than the Last
The matriarch of the Gu Family, Ye Yiwen, bore three sons and one daughter; her eldest son, Gu Yechen, is now the CEO of Gu Group and the heir the outside world has high hopes for.
In the eyes of outsiders, this eldest young master of the Gu Family most resembles their father—arrogant, stern, exacting; whenever anyone makes a mistake at work and he catches it, he strikes without mercy, letting them taste the bitter flavor of a lesson.
But everyone in the circles knows that this eldest young master of the Gu Family, who makes many people tremble at his name, dotes on the Gu Family's adopted daughter in every possible way.
For instance, today, he actually deigned to come in person to resolve the conflict between his dear sister and Gu Wenyan.
"Elder brother."
Gu Wenyan greeted him politely upon seeing the visitor.
Yet Gu Yechen's cold peach-blossom eyes held not a trace of warmth: "There's no need for us to waste time on false pleasantries. Whatever compensation you want, or however you want this resolved, just say it outright."
His tone was cutting—the way he had always treated Gu Wenyan.
In his eyes, his only sister was called Gu Mianmian, not Gu Wenyan.
"Gu Yechen?" The man who had come out of the washroom saw him, raised an eyebrow, and gave a cold laugh. "What are you doing here?"
Gu Yechen was equally blunt: "Head of the Fu Family, I've come to settle a little family matter. I shouldn't need your interference, should I?"
Bao Sihan was in no way outdone by Gu Yechen's presence; if anything, he radiated an even more powerful pressure: "Wen Yan is my fiancée. Her family matters are my family matters as well."
"In that case, I'll be direct—here's one million, as compensation for emotional damages."
Gu Yechen held out a bank card pinched between two fingers, his gaze sliding over Gu Wenyan's fair, gentle face, as if sensing something was different.
But since Gu Wenyan's return, he had had almost no contact with her, and had already formed a fixed impression of her, thinking she was still that vulgar country girl.
"One million?" Bao Sihan scoffed.
Gu Wenyan pushed the bank card back as well: "No need, elder brother. Some matters should be resolved as they should be. I don't need you to dismiss me with money."
Gu Yechen looked at her arrogantly, his peach-blossom eyes full of disgust: "If you don't want money, what do you want? Isn't coming back to the Gu Family just about wanting money?"
Bao Sihan was about to flare up when Gu Wenyan held him back. She spoke with a smile, her eyes shimmering like rippling water: "Elder brother, you seem to have forgotten one thing—I am a Gu, I carry the Gu Family's blood, and I already have the right to inherit the Gu Family's assets."
"You—" Gu Yechen said mockingly, "so you really are just after the money."
Facing his mockery, Gu Wenyan did not get angry, only said softly: "Since elder brother has already made up his mind to think so, whatever I say doesn't matter. Without parents and brothers' affection, only money won't change, isn't that right?"
Her voice was like mountain spring water—clear and crisp, untainted, carrying a natural purity.
Clearly, those words should have made Gu Yechen dismissive… yet he couldn't help hearing a hint of hidden grievance within them.
Gu Yechen's gaze shifted slightly.
Bao Sihan heard it too. He gripped Gu Wenyan's hand in one grasp, fury blazing in his eyes: "Gu Yechen, every single one of you Gu Family people is blinder than the last. Since you'd rather give up your own flesh and blood for some stray you picked up, I'll take care of her from now on. All of you—get lost!"
Gu Wenyan's heartstrings were plucked.
She had just used those words to drop a hint to Gu Yechen, yet she hadn't expected the strongest reaction to come from Bao Sihan…
She looked at the man's resolute, cold profile, and suddenly regretted not cherishing him properly in her past life. If she had married him, she would probably have enjoyed his exclusive devotion forever, wouldn't she?
The exclusive favor she craved most, and hoped most to obtain…
"Elder brother, perhaps you still don't know exactly what happened from start to finish. Take a look at this video."
Gu Wenyan pulled her thoughts back, continuing to stay calm. She knew that for someone of Gu Yechen's temperament, only laying out the facts and reasoning would work.
In her past life, she had listened to Gu Mianmian's slander, insisting on facing them in ways that didn't suit her own nature—becoming reckless and crude, not even knowing why she was disliked.
Having died once, she finally understood where she had gone wrong.
Before her, Gu Yechen's face turned ashen, yet he still took Gu Wenyan's phone.
Gu Wenyan actually didn't care how the three brothers viewed her, but she knew Gu Mianmian had schemed in every way to win their trust, so she had to expose Gu Mianmian's true face in front of them…
"If after watching this video you still think I was being unreasonable, that I deliberately went after Gu Mianmian, then I have nothing more to say."
Time passed, second by second.
As Gu Yechen frowned and watched the video repeatedly, Gu Wenyan suddenly snatched the phone back: "Elder brother, you should understand now."
She said no more, smiled at Bao Sihan: "Let's go."
Gu Yechen was left standing there in the hospital room, his expression shifting unpredictably…
In the car heading back to Bo Family Mansion, Bao Sihan looked at Gu Wenyan's calm expression and asked lightly: "How do you want to handle it?"
Gu Wenyan blinked, a faint smile surfacing on her delicate, luminous face: "Not going to handle it."
The man raised an eyebrow, puzzled.
Gu Wenyan leaned in slightly, her eyes seeming to shimmer with starlight: "If we don't handle it now, she'll live every day in fear, terrified that one day I'll release the video…"
She said frankly: "For me, one, it lets me show my magnanimity in front of the Gu Family; two, it makes them feel even more guilty."
That was indeed a gentler approach, one that left room to advance or retreat as needed.
"If you've thought it through, then do as you say."
Bao Sihan's stern face showed no expression whatsoever, yet his words were full of indulgence—as if no matter what decision Gu Wenyan made, he would support her unconditionally.
Not long after, they arrived at Bo Family Mansion.
A four-story villa, personally designed by a world-class architect, famous throughout Jingcheng—grand yet elegant, exceptionally tasteful.
The butler and servants of the mansion lined up in order, having long awaited at the door. When the car stopped and Bao Sihan stepped out, they greeted him in unison: "Head of the Family, welcome home."
Bao Sihan merely gave a slight nod of his chin, then turned around. Soon, Gu Wenyan stepped down as well.
Many of the servants in Bo Family Mansion were seeing this Gu Family daughter, who was originally to marry the Head of the Family, for the first time.
The slender, graceful woman possessed a beauty as gentle and restrained as pearl and jade—not sharp or showy, with a pair of eyes that naturally brimmed with tenderness…
The crowd was somewhat stunned.
"Take everything upstairs." Bao Sihan's cold, distant gaze swept toward the butler. "Have the things the Madam needs been prepared?"
The butler, in his fifties, dressed in a Western tailcoat, bowed politely: "Head of the Family, everything has been prepared."
Bao Sihan looked at Gu Wenyan: "I'll show you around first."
However, a work call came in at that moment, so Bao Sihan could only arrange for the butler to show her around first.
The butler said respectfully: "Madam, this way please."
Gu Wenyan had just been about to lift her foot when she seemed to sense a gaze filled with hostility fall upon her.
