It had become one of the few moments of peace she could find within the Palace as Edward was always calm during such trips, seemingly enjoying the outside. Despite this, she was extra happy today. She turned a corner and saw Alfred sitting under a canopy in the distance. Of course, he wasn’t alone, being surrounded by his Royal Guard; she was the same., but they were always silent unless spoken to.

As if he sensed her presence he turned to face her direction giving a soft smile. She smiled back speeding up, getting a laugh from Edward. Standing up, Alfred walked over to the little boy in his chair and carefully picked him up. "You’re getting heavy Edward." He laughed and said, spinning the little boy around in the air.

"He has been eating well recently. The doctor said that he must have gotten accustomed to his pains now." She replied watching Alfred take Edward and sit down, placing him on his lap. It was a far cry from how he first was when returning to the Palace. He had been unable to even touch the boy feeling disgusted to do so. Isra had been patient and gave Alfred time, letting him slowly come back to his usual self. She could see he had become colder in the way he acted with his vassals and the need for control seemed stronger, but in front of her and Edward, he always returned to his usual self. She was happy but also proud about it.

Proud she was able to do her job and make herself someone Alfred could be relaxed in front of. Proud that she was the one who was able to let him heal. She still had a way to go, but if he could act like this in front of the two then it was fine for her to take it slow.

"How have you been? I’m sorry for the neglect recently but you know work is hectic these days." Alfred’s question broke her thoughts.

"I’m fine. He has slowly become less needy and stopped crying every day, so finally I am getting more rest." Her words were happy but Alfred heard the bitterness deep within.

"I’m sorry Isra." Alfred could only lower his head and apologize. "I’m sorry I forced you to stay alone. I know you already were struggling back then and I left you when you needed me most." Isra’s smile dropped and she looked down at her fidgeting hands.

"I know it’s your job. You have reasons and motivations that you won’t even tell me. But it hurts still. Many nights I woke to his cries and looked for you to help me, but I quickly realized you weren’t here." She could feel her eyes watering and took a deep breath trying to stop it. "I just wished you could have delayed it. Even by a day. I wanted to you stay here with me, with Edward. You missed his birthday for goodness sake."

Alfred’s head hung low. He could see it was something she had bottled up. She had kept it to herself for so long because of his own pain. But he had neglected hers. He was selfish. Once again he only focused on himself. "Isra." He quietly said getting her to silently lift her head. Reaching his hand over the table she grabbed it, getting him to squeeze tightly.

"No words can express how I feel. I dreaded leaving Edward and you. I had wanted to be there for his birthday. How many times I would wish to be lying next to you and waking up beside you? I left with a smile on my face because I wanted you to not worry, to be able to know I would definitely come back. But I dreaded the moment. I had wanted to see my son. I wished to hear his first words. I wanted to play with him." Alfred stopped. He squeezed her hand tighter. "But I couldn’t."

"But why?" Isra said on the verge of tears. "Why must you do all this? Why can’t you be satisfied with what you have, what we have."

Her voice broke his heart. He looked down at the little boy on his lap and saw his face radiated with a smile in his direction. At that moment he thought about stopping everything. Maybe she was right. Maybe it was better if he kept what he had.’Have I prioritized the wrong thing?’It was a question he asked himself. But someone else answered.

An immense rage stemming from betrayal at even asking the question came from within. He could feel the little boy whose body he took, anger directed towards him. He had promised him before anything. He had promised he would sacrifice anything to see his vision. To even question it was a betrayal for Little Alfred. Alfred could only force a weak smile. He knew what he had to do. "Everyone listening. I order you to take ten steps forward and not hear a word I am about to say. If you do you are ordered to forget everything." Alfred gave the order and the royal guard in unison moved away from him.

"I made a promise Isra. One I never told you. I don’t know why I kept it a secret. Maybe I was afraid it would hurt you, make you feel less, maybe I couldn’t fully trust you with it or maybe I just forgot. I don’t know." Alfred started to talk, his voice full of regret. She looked at him with a small smile. "You know my circumstances, but you don’t know the circumstances of the original owner of this body."

His words caused her to be confused. She assumed the original had just disappeared. Alfred could see this thought and shook his head. "He’s not dead nor alive. He is simply trapped. A prisoner in his own body. Me and him over the years have slowly become one but a distinct difference or line always exists, that separates us. He has all my memories as I do his. But he is unable to do anything only watch."

Alfred paused letting her digest all the information he had just told her. "The day I fought my uncle and came back from the forest I met him for the first time. Before that, I had no idea where all those feelings came from that I told you about. The ones that influenced me on the battlefield. You told me it was probably something I never had the chance to experience before but after meeting him I knew. They were his not mine."

"He has silently been forced to watch everything I do, only able to have a say when his emotion reaches its peak. But when I met him. I realized what I had done, forced this boy to suffer and so I made a promise to him. Create an Empire for him. Make his name known to the entire world, no matter the cost."

"But it’s not your fault Alfred. You don’t owe him anything." Isra said sadly. She sympathised with the young boy but she wanted Alfred herself. "You have a choice."

"I always have had a choice. You or him. Edward or his promise. I had it when I left for war and I will have it in the future." Alfred removed his hand from hers and fell into them. "Every time I must make a choice. I have to decide, my family or him. I stole his whole life Isra. I fight with myself every time but I can’t turn my back on him. He is the only way I can justify everything I have done. I have killed hundreds. I have made children into soldiers. I have allowed starvation to take place so I could look better. I have had babies murdered in their own beds."

"Tell me Isra. What should I do?" His voice broke slightly asking, "I can’t just stop. It’s gone too far. If I stopped I wouldn’t be able to live with myself. The amount of blood I spilled. The number of innocents I have condemned. I can feel them clawing at me. Trying to take revenge that can never be fulfilled. This promise is the only thing I have that can justify everything. It’s the only way I can look at you, Edward, everyone, and still keep my sanity."

Isra watched as Alfred’s voice became more frantic. He says he kept his sanity but Isra felt different. He was insane. Not in a traditional sense but compared to who he was when he first came. He had become something his old self would never recognize. He had become so obsessed with a promise that he was willing to throw his humanity away. Isra loved Alfred but she knew he wasn’t without flaw. She knew he could be caring, loving, smart, and strong. But she also knew he was ruthless, arrogant, and cruel. Sometimes she felt he represented both sides of a coin.

He had humanity and yet also didn’t. He was a loving father yet killed a child in their bed. He made education a priority for all his people but starved thousands so he could look like a hero. He had gone insane long ago. He didn’t enjoy cruelty but was willing to use it. She wondered how the teacher of the old world would react seeing Alfred.

It also hurt her. She saw how he acted with this promise but couldn’t help but wonder if had forgotten the one he made to her. She had slowly embraced her new life, forgetting her old world, but Alfred seemed that have ignored it completely. He had done everything in his power for this one but not for her. It knew she had other priorities now. Ones which couldn’t allow her to live in the past. She loved her new life. She had the freedom to do what she wanted. She just felt Alfred ignored her own wishes so she would come to love this life/
",1700,"2026-06-03T11:17:48.774Z","2026-06-03T11:17:51.400Z",1,"novelbin.me","f2bc80f72c2450fd3b20512f14c2b943741afee13966c4f2627fbccdeb84a8aa","the-reborn-king-chapter-111","the-reborn-king-chapter-109",487,"https://novelzhen.com/images/covers/the-reborn-king-cover.jpg"]
