You are a great man, but I can’t help but have never heard of your family before." Oskar said jokingly, but Horace picked up a slight suspicion underneath it.

"It’s understandable for someone from the East such as yourself. Moreover the heir to a dukedom." The men walked out of the establishment and now stood underneath the moonlight, "It’s a minor family. A count family that could easily be mistaken for a Barony."

Horace said with a slight laugh, and Oskar smiled tapping his back, "How you have been born into such a weak family I don’t understand." Oskar removed his hand and reached into his pocket. Pulling out a small seal with a white dove, handing it to Horace, "I will be in the capital for a while. Come see me when you’re free."

"Thank you." Horace smiled saying this and took the seal, before saying his goodbyes and leaving. Oskar looked at his back but as soon as he turned his face fell.

"Find out if a Mikos family exists in the West." He said to one of his followers who gave a slight nod.

"What’s wrong with him?" One asked Oskar, not getting a reply. Oskar didn’t know why he couldn’t trust Horace completely but there was something in the back of his mind that screamed at him. First, it was not recognising his name despite being the heir to a duke. It was a slight thing but not something he paid too much attention to. He was sure there were many families he didn’t know.

The main thing was the eyes that Horace would look at them with occasionally. It wasn’t the eyes of a low-ranking noble but someone analyzing everything about him. Oskar didn’t know what to think but he could only have one man in mind; Snowid. The King was trying to reform the nation and knew a lot of the nobility was apprehensive about it. It wouldn’t be a surprise if he had his men infiltrate high society.

"Just be wary around him for now. If I’m proven wrong it’s fine." Oskar said with a smile leading away his men.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Horace entered his house once more. He dropped his facade and went straight to his desk. Taking out a pen and paper he began.’Infiltration successful. A disguise has been created. Creating a link with the Laska Family. Will keep you updated.’Finishing he left the house once more and went across the street. Slipping the note through the flap in the door he went back.

Horace sat and thought. He could see and hear that Oskar didn’t trust him completely, which made sense. His claiming to be from the West when Oskar was from the East was the main thing he was sure of. He knew that the two sides of the nation had all but been integrated, but that only truly existed for the peasantry. Amongst the nobles it was different. This however was something Horace wanted. If he could play on this then he could cause friction within the nobility. As for other reasons, it was something Horace would have to find out the more he spent with the man.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Your Majesty." William walked into the office giving a deep bow before taking his seat. Alfred didn’t look up finishing the work he was doing, before he spoke. William didn’t mind. He waited patiently. Putting his seal on the document he placed it on his desk and finally looked up.

"Why did you wish to see me then?" Alfred asked giving his full attention. William nodded.

"I have decided to send Issac to deal with the pirate lords. Esmond has told me his son is across the border. If I’m not willing to send my own when he will then it is an embarrassment." William paused and looked deep into Alfred’s eyes. Alfred saw the worry in them for his son. "I’m wondering however if you can spare a few Unyeilding guards for him. I trust the ability of my soldiers, but I need people who fear nothing and are highly skilled."

"Is that all?" Alfred asked confused. It was an easy request and he knew Charles would be willing to lend a couple. William shook his head hearing this.

"I will also need the funds for this. I am happy to use Flanders silver for it but seeing as how this is your command..." William trailed not finishing his sentence and Alfred laughed and waved his hand at him.

"I already had the funds ready don’t worry. I’m not going to force you to use both your son and money on this." William lightly smiled hearing this. Alfred looked at him with a wide smile, "You are the only man in this Empire who will talk like that to me William. It’s refreshing."

"Well, you should ready yourself for a couple of years’ time." With a gentle, but happy look, he carried on, "When your boy grows up he will make it his mission to antagonize you. You wouldn’t believe how much Issac does it."

The two men laughed and Alfred rubbed the gem on his finger. "I’ll wait for that day. But even saying this I don’t think I will be able to take Edward seriously. I’ll always see him as my little boy."

"You will." William didn’t refute it. "But they are the only people you can truly trust. So you can’t always look at them like that" He said with a somber voice and Alfred looked down at his hands.

"I know." He looked at the old man before him, "I’ll wait for that day, but when it comes I think I really become an old man." The two sat in silence for a couple of seconds and Alfred looked at his desk. He saw how little work he had left. "William." He said softly getting the man’s attention once more. "Shall we go for a drink?"

It was a request he wasn’t expecting but William nodded. He was more than happy to oblige with a bit of downtime in such a hectic time. Alfred smiled calling Chris.

"Go change into something less noticeable." Chris gave a bow and Alfred led William to his other room. Reaching in he grabbed a large brown cloak and threw it towards him. "We don’t want to be exposed straight away." William looked at it and smiled, feeling nostalgic. He remembered a time when Alfred’s father was still a Prince and he was the heir to Flanders.

"You don’t have to tell me your Highness. I was doing this before you were born." His mind was full of happy memories as a teen when he snuck away from events. He was sure his son did it and was happy to see that Alfred still had a playful side to him. Alfred then carefully pulled out a small blade and passed it to William. The man quickly hid it under his cloak saying nothing, whilst Alfred did the same. Chris returned quickly and the three men left the Palace heading towards the large city below.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Alfred led the two to a small bar near the Palace. It wasn’t high-end but couldn’t be called a run-down establishment either. Walking in with his hood up, he attracted some attention but people quickly returned to their own conversations not bothering. He had tried once to go out not hiding his face and suffered for it.

The two followed behind last and took a seat. "What can I get you." The service was quick and the three looked up at the smiling man.

"Whiskey." Alfred was quick to answer. Ever since he had met Ivan he had made it his mission to start a trade deal for the drink and now it was something that spread to many places within the capital.

"Just an ale," William ordered with Chris getting water. As quickly as they were served their drinks came. William picked up his drink took a sip and enjoyed the taste. He looked at Alfred who smelt his with a delighted look before drinking it. "I don’t know how you drink that stuff Yo... Alfred." He stopped himself from calling his title.

"A refined taste." Alfred took another sip. "That being said. Your daughter goes to the university, right? How is she finding it?" Alfred’s question got a happy smile from William who looked more than happy to talk about his family.

"She loves it there," William said quickly thinking about the letters he received. "It seems she wants to work in the Palace after she finishes. Talking about how in the Silverhaven, Issac would overshadow her the whole time. Whilst I’m proud she has found her own path, for her to not want to work in her home makes me sad." Despite saying this Alfred could hear the pride in his voice.

"The Palace," Alfred said surprised taking another sip. "Why does she want to work in that stuffy place?"

William laughed with Chris giving a small chuckle, "Your wife." He gave a small groan, "She has become the main talking point amongst the women of society. Elizabeth has said she wants to help her with everything, hopefully becoming her lady-in-waiting."

Alfred shook his head with a smile, "The number of husbands that have sent me letters saying how their wives are picking up dangerous hobbies like swordplay is astonishing." Alfred downed his drink and called for another, "I should properly do something about it. I don’t want them to hurt themselves because their husbands won’t get a real tutor."

"Despite your grievances, you look quite happy about it." William pointed out calling for a second drink.

"My wife is having fun, how could I not," Alfred replied and William smiled.

"Amelia is the same. I struggle to get mad with her. Even if she drives me up the wall sometimes." The two smiled, tapping their two new cups together.

"Is she wanting to use the sword as well?"

William shook his head. "Maybe if she was younger but now she loves her garden. You should bring Isra up some time to see it. I can guarantee it is up to par with the Palaces." He said with pride.

"I might. I heard SilverHaven is quite nice. I only have been able to see it in passing. It would be nice for a getaway." Alfred stopped and looked at his cup drinking its contents, "But not right now. Too many matters require our attention."

The two nodded to this, "I guess I’m not going home for a while then." William said with a tired voice. He took a drink and the three sat in silence for a while. William observed Alfred as he drank another drink and called for a third.

"You look better," William said softly. He could see the man’s eyes were more at peace than before, but his heavy drinking at the moment wasn’t going unnoticed.

Alfred gave a little hiccup and smiled, "I’m fine now. I think." He fiddled with his hands as he waited for his next drink, "But, I can never be sure. It was a strange wake-up call." Alfred said being purposefully elusive and William watched to see if he wanted to say more. Seeing his silence, however, he knew nothing more would be said. He just drank his drink and watched as Alfred drank his third. He didn’t like seeing it but didn’t stop the man knowing he was using the time to unwind fully.
",1925,"2026-06-03T11:17:48.774Z","2026-06-03T11:17:51.400Z",1,"novelbin.me","8486e7660cd285574188b4cab61298c4bd13e413edc042d1486cad38b703ab38","the-reborn-king-chapter-121","the-reborn-king-chapter-119",487,"https://novelzhen.com/images/covers/the-reborn-king-cover.jpg"]
