They saw Alfred rapidly becoming drunk, whilst William slowly reached the stage. They were wary of seeing Chris only drink water, but they knew that it meant it was an even better target. They watched as Alfred stumbled standing up and dropping a huge amount of Gold coins on the table before stumbling out. Everything aligned for it to be the perfect target for them tonight.

The three hiding their identities obviously meant they weren’t meant to be there, how drunk one of them was and the amount of wealth they easily spent. With knowing looks the five nodded to each other and got up following. It was always their plan to come to places like this, one where nobles would sneak away. It had worked many times before and they were sure it would again.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Alfred was oblivious to the danger approaching but Chris was different. He noticed the strange looks from across the tavern quickly. He looked to William and gave a subtle nod behind him as they took Alfred back. It was a short walk to the Palace, the three not being daring enough to venture too far. William glanced back and although slightly drunk, was still stable enough to notice his surroundings.

He let out an exhausted sigh. He wanted the day to be trouble-free and he was sure Chris was the same. They could tell Alfred had used the time to truly relax in his hectic schedule, but it seemed to be a privilege he couldn’t afford. "Up ahead. It is a patrol route. Should be Unyeilding soldiers due to how close it is to the Palace." William said getting a nod in response.

The five followed from behind at a distance. They could see that Alfred would have to rest soon with how he was stumbling but felt slightly nervous with how close they were getting to the Palace. Despite this, they weren’t too afraid. Any patrols would go after the three before them.

William watched as the gates for the Palace closed and he gave another nod to Chris. They sped up seating Alfred on a small ledge. The two took to his flanks, standing slightly in front. They reached for the weapons under their cloaks and held them tightly, but didn’t draw them yet.

The five seeing the three stop smiled and approached. They pulled small blades they had hidden and the leader walked closer with a smile. William and Chris could tell he was trained in combat from his posture alone but it didn’t faze them. He eyed up Alfred who held his head and muttered to himself and then the two next to him.

"We all know what we want. Hand over the gold." He didn’t bother beating around the bush seeing that the two in front of him also had a military background. He thought at least one had to be a mercenary, particularly Chris, defending a noble or rich merchant.

Before William could move, Chris took a step forward and pulled his cloak off, prevailing his face. He knew best how to deal with these types having spent time in a mercenary camp all those years ago. "Fuck off." His voice was harsh, but a hand on his blade showed he was joking around with the man.

He also saw Chris holding his sword and stepped forward, closing the range. "Just give me the money and I will." He wasn’t backing down, and Chris felt his veins pop. He couldn’t believe someone was trying to rob the Emperor, even if he was in disguise.

"ALL OF YOU HOLD YOUR PLACES!" A yell came from the distance and stopped Chris from drawing his blade. He would recognize the flat voice from anywhere, knowing a patrol of Unyeilding soldiers had suddenly arrived. One of the men seeing this tried running but soon found himself impaled in the leg by a javelin thrown from the 20-meter distance between them.

All the men held their places as the leader turned to the four soldiers approaching. He didn’t even bother reaching for a bribe knowing that they didn’t accept anything, unlike city guards. "Forgive us We didn’t mean to bother honorable men such as yourself." it was annoying to talk like that, but he would rather be a flatter to them than get on their wrong side at the moment.

The four approached with cold eyes and looked at Alfred mumbling to himself. "Stand him u..."

"Silence!" William spoke in a commanding tone as he took his hood down. The entire incident had nearly sobered him up and he now couldn’t be bothered to waste time. The Unyielding were ready to cut him down but stopped quickly recognizing who he was in a instant. Alfred looked up in his hardly able to see but still recognising the amour.

Lowering his hood, his golden hair was on full display and the four fell to their knees quickly." Your M..."

"Shhhhhh." Alfred put his finger over his lips playfully. "I don’t want my wife to know I snuck out." The four didn’t hesitate and stood up hearing his slurred words. They all looked towards the five men who were stunned silent.

"What shall we do with them?" One asked and Alfred looked at the five, only realizing they were there now.

"Who are they?" He asked William and the man bitterly smiled.

"They wanted to rob you." He said calmly getting an exaggerated ’oh’ from Alfred.

Alfred looked at them once more seeing small blades in their hands. His eyes went cold. "Kill them." He threw the order out easily before grabbing William’s shoulder and helping himself up. He soon began walking again, followed by the two. The Unyielding didn’t hesitate and attacked before the word left his mouth striking the five who tried to run, cleaning the scene up.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Within the Palace halls. Alfred stumbled his way through with Chris watching his back. He stopped looking at a large pair of doors and softly smiled walking in. He saw Edward cutely sleeping there and felt his smile grow ten times wider as he walked over. Daisy awoke immediately and reached for a blade on her leg but stopped seeing Alfred who put a finger on his lip.

Hanging over the boy’s crib he watched as he breathed softly. Reaching down he poked his cheek getting a small reaction from him trying to push his hand away. With a small chuckle, he leaned over, being as careful as he could, and placed a kiss on his forehead before leaving, trying not to fall over.

Closing the door behind him he carried on. "He’s so cute." He said to Chris with a smile. "A shame he will grow up." Chris just lightly chuckled hearing that as he made sure Alfred reached his room.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Within the Commonwealth a couple of days passed and Horace sat within Oskar’s manor, waiting for him. He had spent the last few days planning for every possibility and made sure to carry a few hidden weapons on him for the worst.

Oskar walked in flashing his friendly smile getting one in return. "Jedrick. How have you been my friend?" He turned to the butler quickly. "Get some tea for us."

"Enjoying the sights of the city. How about yourself, Your Grace?" He made sure to be polite giving a slight bow.

Oskar waved him off. "No need to be so formal in private? But to answer your question, fine. Work is busy, especially with the King pushing many new reforms." Oskar eyed the reaction from Horace and didn’t notice any change in his expression.

"Ah. Must be hard for a family such as yourself. Mine only has a few men so we easily carried them out. No point in fighting it when we can’t hope to stand against his might." Horace said casually, taking the tea from the butler and smiling.

Oskar squinted for a second not going unnoticed by Horace. "I see. I guess it must be one of the perks of being a smaller family. The Laska’s are happy to carry out the order obviously, but these things take time. I wonder, is your family coping well with them?"

"We get by. Luckily it’s not land reforms but mainly military might. It doesn’t affect us much. But I can understand why you would have trouble, commanding thousands."

"It’s not too bad," Oskar said with a flat tone not really believing it himself. "We are loyal to the Commonwealth. It ous an honour to help the nation." It was a brick wall. He could see Oskar was very guarded against saying anything against the military reforms Snowid wanted.

The butler entered once more and poured the tea. "No one would doubt this." Horace took a sip of his tea. He put a pleasant expression on tasting it. "This is nice. Where did you get it from." Horace recognized it instantly having grown up with enough wealth to drink Bactrian tea, but wanted to gauge Oskar’s reaction, knowing that trade was heavily restricted with them by Snowid’s order.

"I knew you would like it." Oskar smiled, picking up a leaf from the tray, "With the war between the Goitcs and Nogrovod over, the Gotics could begin to refocus on producing it. High-quality stuff."

’Got him.’Horace said quietly to himself in his mind. Most nobles wouldn’t mind saying it unless they believed the other was working for Snowid. Especially a duke, as Snowid, would be hard-pressed to punish them over such minuscule things. "Can’t say I ever had it. My family can only get the cheap stuff. A shame."

"It will only get cheaper as time goes on. A shame we can’t get Bactrian stuff anymore. The King doesn’t want any noble funding their new war no matter how little."

"I don’t blame him. War with the Liaponic Empire always ends in a stalemate but if it doesn’t on the off chance, looking West would be their next goal. Your family must understand this the most being the first line of defence. But I wonder, being so close you must have done a lot of trade?"

Oskar smiled taking another sip. "A minor headache, but as you said, understandable. I’m sure my father will negotiate with the King if it drags too long. It’s only tea after all." Oskar said with a friendly tone, it however he could hear that Osakr wished to end the conversation.

"I don’t doubt it," Horace said happily. He took one more sip smiling.

Oskar gave a smile in reply. "Tell me. Your family. Where is it located? I’m sorry for my ignorance but you understand." Oskar quickly changed the topic.

"It makes sense. As I have told you we are a very minor family, a vassal of the Dabrowski house. My brother was sent to the Lindonfall Academy and I mainly help my father with affairs. Rarely do we get the chance to come westward." Horace didn’t lie. Both families existed, but he just needed a name whilst in the capital, and the Mikos family was happy to accept a bribe to agree with it.

"Dabrowski. I pity them truly. The Empire on their border. Must be hard." Oskar didn’t lie in saying that.

"Especially with the reform. A scary time." Horace said leaning back. He looked into Oskars and saw him subtly smiling back hearing that.

"Truly. But Dabrowski is smart. They will handle it fine. I just wonder why trade hasn’t stopped yet."

Horace chuckled, "The Commonwealth makes as much money as the Empire does trading. No reason to stop. Would make us look weak. I’m sure we all don’t want that."

Oskar nodded in agreement. "So." he paused and leaned forward. It was a stark contrast to how he acted throughout the conversation, now covered in a domineering aura. "Why are you in the capital Jedrick?"

Osakr watched as Horace was stunned by the question. Despite that he quickly composed himself. "My father." Horace paused. "He wants me to make some connections here that will help when I take over for him. Said it was one of his regrets." Everything he had said was the truth except the reason, and it worked well, Oskar not seeing through it.

The suspicion in his eye faded slightly. "I don’t blame him. The times we are in, the connection will be a huge help." He took another sip, finishing his tea, "I could help you if you want. Whilst not with everything obviously, but show you a couple of places and maybe a few friends."

Oskar proposed trying to gauge a reaction. He saw a happy flash in his eyes and it made him more confused. He didn’t know anymore. He needed Horace to meet more of his friends, maybe they could help him understand the weird feeling he had about the man in front of him.

"That would be perfect." Horace gave a polite bow, "Thank you."

"Don’t mention it." Oskar flashed his charming smile as the two looked at one another.
",2191,"2026-06-03T11:17:48.774Z","2026-06-03T11:17:51.400Z",1,"novelbin.me","272b68a746402f330740ff246dfd117a8679f1742b73bafdd48f9970b59f95d4","the-reborn-king-chapter-122","the-reborn-king-chapter-120",487,"https://novelzhen.com/images/covers/the-reborn-king-cover.jpg"]
