I couldn’t find you." Oskar walked over to Horace, all smiles.

"I was mingling. I’m not surprised." Horace gestured to the room, showing the large number of nobles present.

"Did you get closer to doing what you wish to do here?"

Horace let out a deep sigh and swirled his drink. "Sadly, not. Many look at rank before anything else. I mention my name, and it’s obvious people don’t wish to engage further. A shame, really. The politics of the capital are truly different from what I’m used to." Once more, he told a half lie. Alfred didn’t care much for rank, mainly valuing ability. It was why someone like Abu, who held no rank, was able to control the largest workforce in the entire Empire.

"Change is slow, but it’s expected. Bloodline has been prevalent for so long that those old guys see that before everything else. Even if the King wants otherwise." Oskar said, disappointed. He did truly value ability, but he knew that rank was always the first thing people would see.

"It matters not as long as I find one person. It’s all I need." Oskar gave an unconvinced nod and the two stood in silence watching the nobility. "I’m surprised more people aren’t approaching you." Horace broke the silence that lingered for slightly too long.

"Many fear my title and think they aren’t worthy. Anyone who doesn’t care about that will approach my father or uncle rather than me. Only a few younger nobles have the balls to approach me, but most are insufferable people." Oskar grabbed and gulped his drink in one sip. "The King should be arriving soon. We are still waiting for the Dabrowski representative."

"Will he come? I know they don’t venture to the Capital too much. Especially after the Empire formed."

"Will see. But the King won’t care. It means one less noble who has a problem with him." Oskar grabbed Horace by the arm. "Come. Let us find the others." Horace nodded and looked ahead. Oskar saw this and, seeing that Horace wasn’t paying attention to him, tactfully tripped himself up, dragging his hand down the side of Horace’s suit.

"Careful." Horace quickly caught him, and Oskar smiled.

"I’m sorry. New shoes. I still need to break them in." Oskar played ignorant but secretly clicked his tongue, unable to feel a vial holding poison.

"It happens to the best of us. But the others will use it as fuel." Oskar knew this. Any slight slip-up would make him the talk of high society for a while. But he didn’t care about that. His uncle’s orders were more important than a momentary loss of face in the noble circle.

They didn’t even make it far before trumpets started blasting. Oskar quickly stopped, and so did Horace, knowing what it meant. They saw the King walk out.

"Now entering. His Highness King Snowid." An oppressive air hung around him, and all the nobles bowed in his direction. Everyone who had thoughts about Snoiwd forgot them in that instance seeing the beast of a man walk out. His eyes spoke of primal violence behind them, and the unwavering confidence made those with problems not wish to voice them.

They all knew why he called this, and those who were meant to take the main stage in voicing issues began to second-guess themselves. Years had passed since most had seen him for who truly was. The unyielding warrior who completely united the lands under his might. They remembered how he was on the battlefield, the power in his voice, the weight of his steps. Once more they saw the true face of the King they had pushed away.

"Rise." With an arrogance that felt deserved, they all lifted their heads to see the towering King. His clothes clung to his body, revealing his impressive muscle mass. Each vein on his hands made them feel inferior physically. His hair and face, which could be described as messy, made each one feel like they stood in front of a lion. "My people. My loyal people." His voice was slightly threatening.

"I thank you all for coming, despite the hardship we currently face. The loss of life and wealth has been a tragedy for us all. But in the face of this plague from the sea, we must stand united, not fractured. We look weak to our enemies and now with the growing threat of the Empire, we must stand stronger than ever." He looked down at all the faces. Despite their initial fears, many had cold eyes looking towards him. He knew they must have been the coastal nobles.

"Which is why I have called you all here. It is my job as King to listen to your grievances and ensure they never come about again. Now those of you who have issues come forward." His voice was cold and those who had made plans felt unable to move forward.

With gritted teeth, one did. "Your Highness." Count Chimel walked over, his eyes hiding a fury. Chimel took a knee showing respect. "I am Count Chimel. Many here are scared to come forward, but I know you are an honourable man who listens to his people." Chimel slowly rose.

"I will say what all of us think. They may try to say no out of fear but it is the truth. The reforms have left us unable to defend our lands. And the slow response has made us lose faith in what you promised us. You promised security, and now my home is gone. My people were slaughtered. Have you read the reports of what those pirates have done? Not even the babes were spared." Chimel showed a resolve and sympathy he didn’t during the invasion, and his words got nods from those around whose lands had been decimated.

"We know you are a great man, but you betrayed our trust, and thousands have suffered for it."

"What is it you wish to say, Count?" Snowid cut in with a sharp voice. The count felt his back wet, and he wished to step aside and say nothing. But taking a deep breath, he pulled himself together. If he proved himself to be a leader here, he may get support from many that he would never have before. He may even be able to see his wealth grow to levels he had never seen before.

Horace watched with interest, analysing every noble’s reaction, not escaping Oskar’s eyes, who felt the man trying to see things Konrad couldn’t. "We are loyal followers, and your orders are true. But taking away the things we need to defend and police our lands has made us weaker rather than stronger." Chimel said it carefully gauging the reactions from those around. He saw people in agreement and sighed in relief feeling more bold. "The threat of the Empire looms like a scythe and we must prepare for it. But you have neglected us in the process."

"I know I speak for others when I say this, but we wish for the end of the centralised military reforms, and a return to tradition. Many of us don’t feel safe anymore, and our people suffer because of it." Chimel said his piece and tried to look Snowid in the eyes but quickly looked away unable to hold a gaze with him.

Snowid smirked internally, seeing this. He had the bravery to come forward, but couldn’t even meet his eyes. It was almost commendable. "Is this truly the consensus of everyone present?" Once more, he spoke, the subtle threat in his voice not going unnoticed.

People looked to one another, seeing how they would respond. Many who held that belief looked at the Count with pity before turning their heads away. They didn’t know how Snowid would react and didn’t wish to find out. Horace saw the internal battle many had with themselves and made a mental note of it. Few were brave enough to nod in agreement, with even fewer stepping forward.

Snowid saw this and his eyes went cold, but he quickly hid it. "It seems the Count words aren’t false. I can see that some of you agree with his words." Hundreds of thoughts ran through Snowid’s head. They were all selfish people who couldn’t think past their own greed. They couldn’t see what he did was for the Commonwealth. A brief plan to silently get rid of them came and went. He wouldn’t be able to. The fallout would be too great.

"I understand your point, Count. But let me ask you this. How to handle the threat of the Empire. How do you propose we crush a single unified force whilst splintered? Tell me and maybe I will give you my throne." Snowid said in jest, getting chuckles from his loyalists.

The Count froze at his words. "Well, we have held them at bay for so many ye..."

Snowid raised his hand, stopping him. "We held back the Kingdom, under the rule of weak men. I do not like the Blood Child, but he is a strong ruler who has the Empire moving at his sole whim. We have an organisation that is gearing up for war and only war. He slaughtered the Safrids with ease, and it shows that we can no longer stick to the past. Living in it means certain death."

Snowid’s blunt words made many fall into thought. "The Empire has now become a threat that can no longer be stopped by the nobility and crown, being fractured. We must unite the two, and I am doing this. I am not copying the Empire because I want to. I do so because I must. To protect us all."

"But you have not." A second noble spoke up from the back, out of sight of everyone. His words stunned Snowid, but he quickly composed himself.

"The Pirates was a slight on my part. I am sorry. I am mobilising the entire might of the Commonwealth to deal with this now. I will reimburse those who have suffered and make sure this never happens again." Snowid could only back down here. He messed up. He kept his troops too close. And he and the Commonwealth suffered for it. "But I guarantee you this shall never happen again.

When some heard Snowid would pay them back for the damages they stepped down on their opinions. The dislike came from losing their wealth. If they got it back then no damage was done. Snowid saw this and felt disgusted at the level of greed from his vassals but said nothing. He knew what his nobles were. They didn’t even care for their people, only the coffers.

"And what about the people lost?" Another spoke and surprised Snowid, shattering his thoughts. It was an older noble with a hunched back. He stepped forward. Snowid saw in his eyes a great level of humanity that the others who complained didn’t show, and the oppressive atmosphere around him eased.

"I..." Snowid paused. "I can’t return those who have died. I can only protect those who live. My failures caused this, and I won’t apologise for that, only fix it." He took a powerful step forward. "But I will not kneel before you all and give up everything the Commonwealth is doing. We need this. Many of you know deep in your hearts that the Empire can not be stopped without a united front."

He paused once more. "I ask you as loyal men and women of the Commonwealth. Trust in me. I will slaughter those who have invaded us." He slammed his fist on his chest, and once more, the seasoned warrior appeared. The unkillable Goliath on the battlefield showed himself. "I will personally do this."

Trumpets blasted once more. "Now entering the Crow Prince, Leszek Sobieski, and Her Highness, Princess Ada Sobieski." From behind Snowid, two figures walked in. Leszek looked identical to his father. The man was huge with a wild appearance, yet had more elegance than his father. Ada didn’t look like her father. She was thin, but the power and intensity behind her eyes proved she was his daughter.

"In my place, I name my son, Leszek, regent of the Commonwealth. In my place, his authority is absolute. Any disrespect towards him is disrespect towards me. And to show the unity of our Commonwealth, I announce the marriage of my daughter, Ada, to the son and heir of the Dabrowski family. May we have years of prosperity to come."

The marriage came as a bombshell to most. They never expected it, and many realised that Snowid now truly had the support of both of the Dukedoms. No one doubted the Laskas’ loyalty, and the Dabrowskis had always been strange, never really getting involved with the Capital. Many looked towards one another and the hall remained silent, not knowing what to do with the news.
",2157,"2026-06-03T11:17:48.774Z","2026-06-03T11:17:51.400Z",1,"novelbin.me","b30729d42f051bfbb9288af527363c0782ddad233c4d6d42335fdc846e69a6fb","the-reborn-king-chapter-140","the-reborn-king-chapter-138",487,"https://novelzhen.com/images/covers/the-reborn-king-cover.jpg"]
