He looked around at the scene surrounding him. It felt like time slowed as he watched the Ammary reinforcement crash into the attackers. He watched as one of his guards was unlucky, a blade piercing through his neck. Raising his hand on his waist, he looked, and it was dyed red. The crimson liquid rolled down his wrist under his armour, and looking at the sun, a bitter smile spread on his lips. He could see the desperate faces of the people around him working to make sure he lived, but Raven knew better.

He hadn’t died yet because he plugged the wound in his neck, but in his moment of clarity, he realised. How would it even be healed? Pushing himself up, he felt his body was weak and he wanted to laugh but couldn’t. The pain it brought was overwhelming. Pushing his guard to the side, he stumbled his way into the temple. He ignored the panicked cries for him to stop and carried on walking. He held himself up; on the walls, his bloody hand painted them.

He saw his guards who died with a pile of corpses in front of them, protecting his rear.’Thank you.’He knew that his time was coming, but gave silent thanks to the people who fought to try and let him live. Walking through the massacre, he stumbled and fell into a chair. Flipping himself over, he looked up at the symbol of Sol that hung on the wall.’Oh, Sol.’His silent voice was full of passion as his eyes burned with worship.’I will be in your Kingdom soon. Please wait for me.’

As if in response, the sun shone through the glass, filling the temple with its golden glow. The cold embrace of death disappeared and all that was left was a warmth he never would have expected.’Brother.’His head fell as he pulled his pinky from his throat, blood pouring out of it like a faucet.’Protect his blessing. My mission is over.’His mind trailed, and in his darkening vision, he saw the figure with golden hair reaching out to him. Its face lacked any features, but he recognised who it was in an instant.’Your Majesty. Do not mourn me. When we meet again, we shall be in paradise.’He reached his hand out with his final bit of strength to reach for that outstretched hand.

His inquisitive guard walked in at that final moment. Raven’s body slumped over as he collapsed to the floor, reaching for something. They tried and failed to catch him and could only look over the collapsed body of their Archbishop. Looking down at his body, they knelt to the ground and clutched the symbol of Sol around their necks, giving a prayer for their fallen comrade.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Isra stood on the top floor of her residence with a soft smile. The fighting down below had broken out, but she wasn’t worried. She had overestimated the ability of her attackers. To describe it as a slaughter was giving too much credit to them. Marcus had swiftly arrived with his men and encircled them with ease. The pained screams of the people below sang a tune of hopelessness, whilst the pool of blood that formed created an image of hell from those on the receiving end. How much effort had been spent to destroy the rebellion for it to fizzle out with their one and only assault? Her grip on the sword in her hand loosened as she shook her head.

She wanted to laugh at them, but didn’t. She understood they were tricked. Tricked by sweet words or a vision that could never come true. Turning away from it, she had no reason to continue watching. "Chris," Isra spoke softly, taking her seat. The loyal guard gave a bow towards her. "Has Esmond finished his task?"

"I do not know Your Majesty. He is yet to return."

"A shame." Isra clicked her tongue in annoyance. Leaning the blade on the sofa she took a seat and sighed. "What about Raven? Any news?" With a shake of the head, she looked down, disappointed. Whilst she knew everything would be fine, she couldn’t help but think things had gone too perfectly. It was a scary feeling. Something she had never experienced before. It made her think of Alfred. When everything was going perfectly he got cocky and paid for it. She didn’t want to experience the same thing.

"Send a man down to summon Marcus. When everything is taken care of, I need him to do something for me."

"Of course." Chris gave a bow and left to carry out her order. She crossed her arms, and her nails dug into her clothes. Why was she feeling like this? It was strange. Everything she could see showed that the situation had been taken care of, but the foreboding feeling that plagued her never left.’No. We were careful. Everything must be fine.’She tried to shake the feeling away, but even with her self-assurance, she didn’t feel better.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mother felt like her world was on fire. She watched as her followers were killed before her. Her breathing became frantic as she turned and ran away from the temple.’I must survive.’Mother sprinted with all her strength, abandoning everyone who trusted in her. She turned her head back over and over, paranoid about being followed. Despite her panic, she arrived at her home undisturbed. Closing the door behind her, she leaned against it before sliding down and curling into a ball.

’This wasn’t meant to happen.’Her hands shook as she pulled them from her face. Gritting he teeth, she threw herself up and went to her tea cabinet. Looking at the leaves inside her face, twisted in anger. "Ahhhhh." With all her might, she threw it across the room. The glass shattered into hundreds of pieces as she swiped all the cups on the table to the ground. "Dammit." Repeatedly, her fist hit the table as she fell onto it. "Why? Why? I followed your will. I wanted to build your Kingdom. Why did you abandon us?" Mother shouted into the air, getting no response.

"Why did you abandon me now? I gave you everything. I worship you. I loved you. Everything about me is because of you." Still getting no response, her fist slammed into the table. "KHORS!" She screamed out in desperation. "Why do you let your father’s puppets still rule over us? We had a chance. Why? WHy? WHY!" Her body fell, and her head rested on the table. "Why do you not answer me? We all carry a part of you."

Her eyes watered as she broke down in tears. She didn’t know how to feel. Everything was wrong. "Aseel." In her sadness, she called for her son. He never returned, and Mother knew what that meant. "My sweet boy. To leave your Mother." Her tears became uncontrollable. She clutched her heart. "Aseel."

Moving her hand, she clutched the symbol of Khors. "Everything. Is lost. Because of you." Ripping the symbol off her chest, she looked at it with hate, the thing that had once given her a purpose in life. "Gregor, Aseel. Everything is because of you. Why do you take from me when I tried to give you everything?"

Throwing it to the ground, she stood up and looked at it with disgust. "I renounce you." Her voice carried a deep venom. "You are no benevolent god." Walking away, she went to her drawers and pulled out a bottle of alcohol. She never liked to drink, but she didn’t know where to turn. Today, she had lost everything, and she didn’t want to feel anything anymore. Popping the top of it, she took it to her lips and drank.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gregor stood outside the door and took a deep breath. It took all his courage to knock on the door, but eventually he could. Giving it a soft knock, he heard a crash inside. Scared for what might have happened inside, he swung the door open without permission and saw Mother, slumped over the table.

Underneath her nose was covered in blood, and he saw a drop falling from her ear. "Joan." Gregor went over and grabbed her, helping her sit down. She looked up at him and burst into a wide smile.

Reaching up, she grabbed his face. "Gregor." It was a voice full of affection. "I knew you would come back to me." She giggled after saying that and tried to drink more alcohol, only for the bottle to be empty. Shrugging her shoulders, she threw it over her back and hugged the man. "Everyone abandoned me. But you came back."

Looking down at her, he felt conflicted. He wanted to help her, but he could see that Esmond had already done his work. The blood from her nose he could brush off, but seeing it come from her ears, he knew she was not long for the world. "Joan." He spoke softly. "Let’s get you to bed." Without waiting for her response, she swung her arm over his shoulder and dragged her. The house was so quiet it felt eerie, and Gregor noticed Aseel’s lack of presence. He shook his head and said a quiet farewell to him.

"Gregor." Mother looked at him whilst lying on her back. "Everyone’s gone." She covered her eyes with her arm, and he watched as she cried. "They’re all gone. We were abandoned." Her voice broke, and he gently held her hand.

"But you came back." She smiled and interlocked her fingers with hers. "I’m sorry. I’m sorry for ever thinking I could do those awful things to you." He saw the guilt devour any other emotion in her eyes, and he knew what she meant by that. Despite this, he shook his head. It was a final kindness he could offer.

"Sleep, my friend. Tomorrow is a brighter day." Gregor held back his tears and gave his soft smile. Joan looked at it. Her eyes were mesmerised.’How can such a pure being exist?’She reached out to touch his cheek but pulled back, afraid of tainting him.

Closing her eyes, she nodded. "Goodnight, Gregor." Gregor didn’t get up or let go of her hand. He sat there watching her as silent tears fell from his eyes. What could he have done to avoid this? Why did it have to be this way? Hundreds of questions came to his mind but he brushed them all aside and sat in silence. What did it matter? Nothing could change the way things were.
",1765,"2026-06-03T11:17:48.775Z","2026-06-03T11:17:51.400Z",1,"novelbin.me","51d5b6cac9570ba962822ada688ac978dccff68e2243c1b88cb6bf547be852d3","the-reborn-king-chapter-158","the-reborn-king-chapter-156",487,"https://novelzhen.com/images/covers/the-reborn-king-cover.jpg"]
