If Jaslo fell, where would Snowid retreat to?" The old duke looked at Alfred and kissed his teeth, falling into thought.

"There is one fort that can support such a large army before reaching Tourn." Henryk walked off quickly and, after a minute, returned with a map. Crouching down, he rolled it out on the ground and pointed. "Malbork. It’s a large fort on the crossroads that leads north, south, and east. It is also the only road possible to march an army on."

Alfred looked at it and frowned. "How big?"

"Easily, a few thousand can be kept inside. Around Tourn, there are four forts that are similar. They were created for the sole purpose of being the final line of defence." Alfred sighed at Henryk’s words. He expected something like this. It was already a blessing that Henryk’s rebellion made the war so easy. His army was fresh, and their only targets now were the hardest to attack.

"Okay. First, we need to figure out if Snowid will retake Jaslo. If they do, then we attack the fort whilst it’s weak. If not, I’ll send word to Sasha to use her forces to cut off any supply to Malbork." Henryk nodded and left to prepare the scouts they would need. Charles finally came over, seeing Henryk leave.

"Your Majesty." Alfred turned and gave him a soft smile. "Isaac has sent a letter." His voice was hesitant as he spoke.

Alfred held his hand out, expecting Charles to hand it straight over, but seeing his reserved look, he frowned. "What is it, Charles?" Charles gulped and indicated for Alfred to follow him.

"He sent me one separately, detailing what was in your letter to prepare you. It’s not good news." Alfred frowned, and the two sped up until they arrived at Alfred’s tent. Isra was already there, itching to read the letter, but held herself back waiting for Alfred.

As soon as she saw him, she opened the letter and slowly read through it. Alfred watched as her face slowly dropped and a look of absolute terror appeared on it. Isra gashed her teeth as if trying to fight a scream that wanted to come out as she looked at Alfred, her eyes full of rage, fighting not to cry.

"Isra..." Alfred called her name and walked over. Trying to reach out and grab her, she spun and slammed the letter in his chest.

"I need to go home." Her eyes were bloodshot, and glaring at Alfred, he could see she was fighting to suppress a rage he had never seen before. Looking at it, he slowly read, and much like Isra, his face paled.

"They...They targeted Edward." Disbelief was all he could do as Isra pushed past him, grabbing her sword. Alfred spun and grabbed her hand, stopping her from leaving, but Isra threw him off and looked at him hatefully.

"I’M GOING TO MY SON!" Screaming at him, Alfred tightened his hold on her hand.

"I’m not stopping you." His voice came out almost like a whisper. Turning to look at Charles, he shook slightly at the deep rage in Alfred’s eyes. Isra looked his way, and Charles felt his back was wet.’What idiot did this?’Having Alfred in a fury was bad enough. He became reckless and impulsive. But Isra aswell, and now there was no one to calm him down.

Gulping the saliva that had built up in his mouth, he averted his gaze and looked to the ground.’At least Edward isn’t dead.’It was the only saving grace they had. If Edward died, forget about conquering the Commonwealth; Alfred might destroy it instead. "Charles," Alfred spoke with the same quiet tone as if afraid to talk any louder. "When did you get your letter?"

’Fuck.’Charles groaned internally. The first part of his anger had already started, the paranoia. "At the same time as you, Your Majesty. The messenger’s order was for me to get both you and her majesty to read the letter, along with small details about what happened."

"huh." Alfred looked at Isra, who was still glaring at Charles, grabbing his face, and he forced her to look at him. Resting his forehead on her, their cold eyes seemed to reflect off each other. "Go back. Get the Palace in order. Make sure Edward is fine."

The joy of being on the battlefield quickly vanished, and Isra pulled away, nodding. Why did it matter if she was having fun if her son suffered because of it? Watching her leave, Alfrfed turned to Charles. "Give her some guards and get Horace."

The man quickly nodded and left, leaving Alfred alone. Looking at the letter on the table, he gritted his teeth and grabbed the sword leaning against his chair. "AHHH" Grabbing it, he swung with all his power, getting the sword lodged in the table.

Without worrying about the worried looks people gave his tent from outside, he pulled the sword and swung over and over against the table, until the letter had seemingly disintegrated. Horace walked in just after and saw Alfred breathing heavily, holding his sword.

"What are your orders, Your Majesty?" Horace placed his hand on his chest and bowed. It wasn’t his place to ask what had happened, nor was he the one who should comfort Alfred. He wasn’t his friend but his servant. If he had been summoned, it meant he had a job to do, not give Alfred a shoulder to cry on.

"The Prince was attacked," Alfred said coldly, clenching his fists just to stay sane. "My son was attacked." Horace’s eyes went wide in shock, but he quickly suppressed it and lowered his head deeper.

"What are your orders?" Horace asked again, but with a noticeable chill that was different from the first time he asked. Looking at him, Alfred smiled coldly and walked over.

Crouching down to be eye level, he rested his hand on Horace’s shoulder. Horace looked up as the two eyes met. "Only one man would hurt my son." Alfred spoke with a venom he didn’t think was possible, "I want him to feel the same pain I am."

Horace froze. "It will be hard," Horace said, the obvious and quickly realised it wasn’t what Alfred wanted to hear. The grip around his shoulder tightened.

"Are you disobeying an order. What are you, Horace?" Alfred’s tone got colder and colder with each word. Horace could tell that he was thinking of anger and hate alone, but quickly realised the merits of the plan if he succeeded. They had Ada. If he managed to kill Lesezek, then Snowid would have no other child to be able to take his place as regent.

Either he would be forced to leave the front or put someone who wasn’t family in a place of power. Supply line would get disrupted, and eventually the administrative arm of the Commonwealth would collapse before their army did.

"Your Majesty." Horace lowered his head deeply, showing the back of his neck. "I am nothing but a tool for you to use. If this is your order, I will accept." Alfred thinly smiles, seeing the images of Snowid going insane with news of his son’s death flooding his mind.

"Good." Alfred stood up and looked down at him. "Don’t disappoint me. I still need the Underwells in the Empire. Even if your father failed." Horace closed his eyes and deepened his bow even more.

’My father actually failed.’It was something he couldn’t believe. It was something he had never seen or heard before.’He actually failed.’It wasn’t a small thing either. His failure nearly got the Prince killed.

Horace waited for Alfred to leave before standing up. Fixing his clothes, he brushed the dirt from his knees before grabbing a cloth and wiping his hands.’I can not fail. There will be no need for us if I do.’It was a first for Horace. Feeling fear. A fear of being discarded for being useless. His entire existence. His family’s entire existence was to serve the Lindonfall family. What were they useful for if they weren’t even good for that?

He couldn’t allow his family to end with him because he was useless. He had always believed his father to be the best patriarch the Underwells ever produced. Esmond had always said he had the potential to be it. But now, everything was at risk.

’It will not end. I will be a good servant. I will prove my worth, the family’s worth. No matter the sacrifice.’Saying the family motto in his head, Horace looked awake, dozed off in the tent and slipped the mask he had been ordered to wear back on. Going to the resting area of his operatives, he saw Ada sitting and reading a book. He had been left in charge of watching him, but now the order would go to someone else.

"Prepare to leave. His Majesty has given us our orders." Horace spoke sharply, and his people quickly got up to do as told. Giving Ada one last look, he left to prepare.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Esmond walked into one of the lowest rooms of the Palace. Violet was already waiting for him, looking at Daisy’s body, which had been mummified to prevent it from rotting too quickly. Esmond didn’t have a change in expression looking at her.

"You may do as you wish for her send off. If you have nothing in mind, I will give her a dignified service for her duty in defending the Royal family." Violet nodded and reset her hand on Daisy’s covered face.

The door opened once again, and Abu walked in. Esmond shot him a glare and frowned. "You should be with the Prince." Abu rolled his eyes and walked over.

"Issac is there along with his guards." Abu looked at Daisy and frowned. "Now there are only two of us." Looking at Violet, she softly smiled and nodded. The two never really spoke after Alfred bought them from the slave auction, but she remembered how Abu defended both her and Dasiy when they were unable to.

"I will bury her." Violet finally answered Esmond, and the old man nodded.

"Two days. Return to work afterwards. If you fail to..." He didn’t finish, but Violet understood and nodded. She knew Esmond wasn’t being kind to her out of warmth. It was out of respect for Daisy, who died protecting the Royal Family. After all, she had seen Esmond kill his own men for the slightest mistakes and get no respect, just an unmarked grave somewhere.

Esmond walked through the halls and arrived at the dungeon door. Unlocking it, a pungent smell assaulted him, but he showed no reaction and slowly descended. His eyes landed on the three who had been left to live in their own filth, slowly being eaten by rats that broke in.

"This won’t do." He knew better than anyone that treating prisoners with care was a must if you wanted them to live. Shaking his head, he quickly walked out of the dungeon and locked it before going to Issac.

Letting himself in, he looked at Edward and deeply frowned. He knew the look on the child’s face anywhere. "If you want our prisoners to live, clean them up. They will die from infection before anything." Esmond said that, took one glance at Edward, and left.
",1906,"2026-06-03T11:17:48.775Z","2026-06-03T11:17:51.400Z",1,"novelbin.me","76f33a0c7f98f1eaad70fb3de3104660e216b25316a9c314a91522e809a3e3f1","the-reborn-king-chapter-327","the-reborn-king-chapter-325",487,"https://novelzhen.com/images/covers/the-reborn-king-cover.jpg"]
