What was important?" Aleksander hardly looked up, seriously staring at the papers. Oskar sighed, expecting this from his uncle.

"The war." Oskar took a deep breath, his usual confidence returning. How winnable do you think it is?" Aleksander finally looked away from the papers and at Oskar. He could see there was more to the question than a fear of losing.

"It’s not good? Why?" Aleksander put the papers down and leaned back into his chair. Pulling out a cigar from his pocket, he quickly prepared it before he started smoking. He needed a rest anyway; why not spend it with his nephew?

"I... I don’t know. I’m just wondering what comes next. If loss. Suppose we win, it’s obvious. Father let the king get weak for a reason. But if we lose, what happens, uncle? We all know how the Emperor treats families he doesn’t like." Aleksander took a deep breath and nodded.

He may not have been head of the family, but alongside his brother, he was one of the pillars that kept it alive. They may have disagreed about how to use the war, but they trusted each other, and in the end, both understood that they were doing what they believed to be right for the family. The only difference is that Aleksander also thought about the good of the Commonwealth.

"I honestly don’t know Oskar. The Emperor is a dangerous man, and we are not in a good position." The cigar touched his lips, and he took a deep inhale. He let the smoke sit in his mouth for a while before deeply exhaling. Watching Oskar, he could tell there was something more—something he was hiding. Years as the left hand of the King gave him that ability. He wasn’t on Konrad’s level, but he could see when people hid things.

"Oskar." Calling out to him, he leaned forward and took another deep inhale of his cigar. "Why are you here?" Oskar could tell there was more to the question.

’As expected of uncle.’Leaning forward, his body went incredibly weak. "I met someone." Lifting his head up ever so slightly, he stared deep into Aleksander’s eyes."Horace Underwell."

Aleksander felt the cigar drop from between his fingers as he stared at Oskar. He tried to find a single lie in the boy’s words, but couldn’t. Oskar reached into his pocket and pulled out the gold coin. Putting it on the table, he slid it across. "Are you serious?" Aleksander said suspiciously and picked up the coin. His eyes narrowed, seeing it was one from the Empire.

"Uncle. You’ve met him before. He killed Piast. He killed Duke Henryk’s son and grandson. His presence in the Commonwealth has lingered for years. And we never noticed. We thought the old snake was a dangerous man. Esmond Underwell taught his son everything, and he perfected it, Uncle. He isn’t even a person, just a doll waiting for whatever role he needs to play." Oskar frowned. "He offered me a choice. To save the family."

Aleksander picked up the cigar he had dropped and relit it. "What did you say?" Blowing a cloud of smoke at Oskar, he waited.

"I ask if I could save you if I accepted. Father has to die. He made that clear. Father would understand me giving him up to save the family. But you, I can’t lead the family alone. And... I don’t know if I want to betray the Commonwealth for it." Oskar lowered his head.

Aleksander chuckled at his nephew, "He got in your head." He spoke coldly towards Oskar, "When are you meeting him?"

Oskar was shocked and looked at his uncle. "A few days. Why?"

"I’m going to meet him," Aleksander said smoothly and got up. Leaving the room, he saw Konrad’s perfect smiling face. Groaning, he walked over to him. "There are no servants here. You can drop the act."

Konrad didn’t stop smiling. "Why did the boy come?"

"An Underwell is in town," Aleksander said indifferently, but he noticed the change in Konrad. The man’s fake smile turned real as he looked at Aleksander, with eyes that begged to come along. He couldn’t help but shiver at Konrad’s burning jealousy for the Underwells. It was beyond anything he had seen. "I’ll meet him in a few days. I’ll have Oskar give me the location."

"Of course. I’ll inform the Prince." Aleksander watched Konrads’ back disappear in the distance. He knew Konrad would tell Lesezek that an Underwell had arrived in Torun.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Horace sat with Halfdan and another operative next to him. Despite the Gentlemen’s club being an open establishment, it was unusually empty as if someone had rented out the entire place just for him. The door opened, and Horace watched as two people walked in.

"Oskar told on me." Seeing Aleksander and Konrad walk in, he sighed and shook his head. "He wasn’t meant to do that." His eyes darted from the two, and Horace smiled, "Aleksander Laska. Brother of Duke Laska." His eyes landed on Konrad, and placing his hand on his chest, he bowed, "It is an honour, Konrad. My father and I hold you in quite high regard." Horace watched Konrad. His angelic smile changed slightly, the end of his lips curling ever so slightly more.’He liked that?’Horace instantly found an in with Konrad and turned to face Aleksander, "So what did Oskar say?"

"Are you stupid?" Aleksander bluntly asked Horace. "Revealing yourself to an enemy. An Underwell as a hostage isn’t something small." Aleksander watched as Horace showed no change in emotion, "Unless it is. You think the Emperor wouldn’t try to save you?"

"My life means nothing if I am caught; my father can always make a replacement," Horace said indifferently and looked between the two. "If Oskar isn’t coming, then I have no reason to stay. Konrad won’t betray the king and you, I don’t think you would either."

"Hold on." Konrad said quickly, "You’re really an Underwell?" He still couldn’t believe it. The heir to his greatest rival revealed himself so openly. It was almost impossible to believe.

"Of course. Do you want me to bring the Princess to confirm it?" Horace cruelly smiled and leaned forward.

Aleksander squinted and stared at him. "Where is she?" They all knew Ada had disappeared. For the longest time, it had been a mystery, but eventually, they concluded that she was dead or captured.

"If I were to guess. In the camp being watched by Duke Henryk’s men. You see, it’s funny. Despite being at war and the entire family at risk of being destroyed, she was the only one who was smart enough to live. Snowid will die. Lesezek will die. I will hunt down any distantly related cousins. The Sobieski family will only have one member left when the Empire is done."

Horace stood up, "If you have no other business with me, I’m going. The fact that Oskar told you I was here means I don’t have a reason to stay. I’ll find someone else to take Laska’s place for our occupation." Horace clicked his tongue and shook his head, "A shame. I like Oskar aswell."

"You’re confident we have no one waiting," Aleksander said, making Horace stop. Smiling, he nodded.

"You’re right. I don’t care if you take me captive, but I would rather not be." Horace, Halfdan and the third all pulled out weapons. Going over to Aleksander, Horace pointed the knife to his throat as Halfdan and the other pointed theirs at Konrad. "Make this easy."

Aleksander sighed and stood up. "I had people outside. We never got the cue that someone was waiting." Horace said quickly before slamming the butt of the knife in Aleksander’s throat.

Konrad quickly reached into his pocket and jumped back. Pulling out a few glass vials, he played with them in between his fingers, "Do the same to me, and I will smash these." Horace punched across Aleksander’s temple, knocking him out. Looking at the poison, he frowned.

"Leave him. We’re going." Looking at Konrad before he left, he smiled, "I’ll leave him somewhere you can find him."

Konrad gave a small wave and watched as the door closed. Once it did, his angelic smile vanished, replaced by a cold look. Pocketing the poison, he waited a minute and left the building. Ignoring everyone around him, he went straight to the Palace.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A few roads away, Horace poured a vial of sleeping medicine into Aleksander’s mouth and left him. "You won’t kill him?" Halfdan was shocked. It was the chance to kill a high-ranking member of the Commonwealth whose death would severely affect the war situation. Horace just shrugged and stood up.

"Im not done with Oskar. He’s wavering. If I kill Aleksander now, I lose the chance to keep the Laskas in power for our rule. It will make things harder in the long run. Besides, the war will be won with or without him."

Halfdan frowned. "Are we leaving?"

"No, we’re going to the palace. Aleksander and Konrad aren’t there right now. A perfect chance to kill the Crown Prince." Horace smiled and moved quickly. Horace moved quickly as his men gathered at the meeting point outside the Palace.

"They will have told the Prince that we are here," Halfdan said without a doubt, and Horace smiled, nodding.

"Yes, you’re right." Horace stopped. "His Majesty wants me to kill the Prince, but it seems impossible." Looking around the city, he got an idea, "But why don’t we do something else to make a chance for us?"

Halfdan looked at Horace’s sly smile with narrowed eyes. "What?"

Looking down at the man, Horace spread his arms and smiled. "Let’s burn the city."
",1641,"2026-06-03T11:17:48.775Z","2026-06-03T11:17:51.400Z",1,"novelbin.me","7de34f4f90784cbad1af2ce97ba788ce33957ae17649022dfbcdbb7964d0c320","the-reborn-king-chapter-332","the-reborn-king-chapter-330",487,"https://novelzhen.com/images/covers/the-reborn-king-cover.jpg"]
