The towering Walls of Zaraslava, named after the rulers who unified the twin Kingdoms, encircled the city like a protective parent, hugging its child. Alfred and the rest of his army could see it from a distance and sighed. How far had he come? From a scared boy to a conqueror. From a child who was murdered on his coronation to someone whose name was known throughout the continent.

The Commonwealth was just one roadblock in his long rule. The Empire may have started with the conquest of the Safrid land, but once he destroyed Snowid and took the Commonwealth, his Empire would finally begin. He knew there was more out there—other lands. His focus had been on the mainland to ward off his enemies, make the Empire a place to be feared, and create a foothold for the Ammary people on the planet.

But there had to be more across the seas. No, he knew it. The barbarian invasion told him more existed out there. A nation could be strong in one continuous Empire. He had seen it on Earth. China, Mongolia, and Russia. But those who stood at the peak of the world’s power for so long spread across the seas like a plague, taking and controlling distant lands.

Alfred could see it. A future where the flag of Ammar flew over a corner of every part of the world. Convoys of ships, bringing gold, silver and things that he didn’t know existed back to the mainland. He would be the one to kickstart the Age of Discovery. The whole world would be chasing him, trying to catch up with him.

Alfred smiled with satisfaction at the future.’Should I care about this world anymore? Let things progress without interference.’It had been on his mind. He had sworn to himself not to progress the world too much. Let technology be discovered on its own. It scared him that if he introduced too much at once, the system would be overly reliant on him, for when he passed, it would collapse.

But he didn’t care anymore. His plans. They may need it after what he saw—men dying so easily from disease. What happened when the Empire became the victim of it. He had the chance now to prepare for future calamities.’It’s not like I would build a nuclear reactor, let alone sue electricity.’ Even if he had the blueprints for a power station, Alfred’s understanding of electricity and how to harness it was lost.

His mind went over things. Gunpowder, basic medicine and agriculture. Alfred’s eyes narrowed. Those were important, but he wouldn’t say it was the main thing he could bring from his old world. Gunpowder was good, but he didn’t know how to make a gun. Penicillin was revolutionary, but actually using it to treat patients was another thing altogether.

No, the most important thing he could bring over was centuries of theory, science, laws and order. If he couldn’t build the things that would catapult this world into the modern era, all he had to do was provide the clues for the people of this world. It was human nature to explore, discover and innovate endlessly. By nature, humans were curious to advance, and if Alfred laid the groundwork for a future where this could be embraced to its full potential, then this world would advance significantly faster than Earth.

It made him smile.’Damn the consequences.’Thinking about that future, he couldn’t help but not care anymore. It excited him to wonder if he alone could push humanity forward, to embrace change. His world went through hundreds of years of stagnation. Suppressed by systems that were scared to relinquish power.

He was different. He was sure he could do it in a way that he wouldn’t lose power. The world had to advance. As long as he left the actual discovery to other people, then they wouldn’t become reliant on him. It solved the problem he dreaded.

"Alfred!" Charles called out to Alfred, breaking him out of his own thoughts. I’ve been calling for you for a while. Are you okay?" Charles asked with worry.’Did the sight of the other day affect him more than I thought?’Charles couldn’t help but worry. But seeing Alfred turn and smile at him, he knew his worries were misplaced.

"I’m sorry, Charles. I just realised something." Alfred’s smile was clear, seemingly free of his burden, "I know what to do. I know how to propel the Empire. No humanity forward now. I know how to change the course of history forever."

Charles looked at him like a madman and smiled, not really understanding what he was talking about. It was nothing new. Everyone in the inner circle knew Alfred knew more than he ever said or did. They eventually got used to it. Charles wondered if the other felt the same, but sometimes he wondered what Alfred knew, what he kept locked away in his mind that he never shared with anyone, even his most trusted confidants. "Are you sure it’s the right thing to do?" Charles may not have understood what Alfred was talking about, but seeing the slight madness in his eyes, he had to ask.

Alfred paused and thought about it again. Was he getting caught up in his excitement to be remembered, or was it truly what he felt was best for the world? In silence, he stared into space for a while, but eventually nodded. It was both. His plans thrilled him, but he felt it was for the best. "Charles. I don’t know. But I think it is."

"If it’s what you will, Your Grace." Charles lowered his head respectfully. All he could do was trust Alfred. He had already followed him for so long. There was nothing else he could do. Alfred smiled and turned back to face Torun.

His plans could wait. Before anything, he first had to conquer the Commonwealth.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Horace sat on a bench in the street. People were rushing about with worried looks, seeing the Commonwealth army pouring into the city, taking defensive positions. He knew what that meant and couldn’t help but smile. "It’s time." Telling himself, he got up and returned to the safe house and let himself in. Going to Alexander’s room, he sat with his eyes closed, and Halfdan silently watched him. "We’re leaving," Horace said, forcing the man to open his eyes.

"Why?" Aleksander asked sternly, but seeing a strange excitement in Horace, he frowned. He didn’t need to hear to understand what happened: "The Empire is here."

"Commonwealth forces have slowly been making defensive positions in the city for the past few days." Horace went over and cut Aleksander’s leg restraints. "That means we need to leave."

Aleksander frowned but did as told. Halfdan went into another room and grabbed a cloak for Aleksander. Putting it on him, he lifted the hood over his head. Taking a knife out, he held it against his back. "Just a precaution."

Aleksander scoffed and shook his head, "Do you not trust me. I already said I would work with you."

"I like living." Halfdan said coldly, "Where are we leaving from?"

"The southern exit," Horace answered quickly and went into the other room. Throwing a torch into the fireplace, he grabbed documents he had gathered and chucked them in before following Halfdan out. Hundreds of people made their way to the numerous exits of the city, trying to leave and making the three frown.

"We won’t be able to leave easily." Halfdan pushed Aleksander, not caring for what he had to say. The three casually walked in the sea of people rushing to the numerous exits from the city.

"I don’t mind leaving you. But you see, Oskar was given a task, and I don’t think it will be good if you remain." Horace’s expression was sly, and when looking at it, Aleksander couldn’t help but get a bad feeling.

"What have you done?" His voice was cold, but Horace’s smile only grew wider.

"You’ll see." He didn’t go further and took the lead. Aleksander stared at his back, wondering if he should say anything to a soldier they passed. But feeling the knife on his back, he kept his mouth shut. Whilst he would have happily died for the Commonwealth before, now there was no point. If Malbork had already fallen, then it meant the Commonwealth’s collapse was inevitable.

There was no point dying a pointless death when his nephew would need him in the future. "You told me my brother had to die. Why not me?"

"Simple. You keep Oskar in check, and Oskar keeps you in check. If you act up I will kill Oskar, if he acts up I will kill you. You serve no other real purpose. Familial bonds truly are the greatest strength and weakness." Horace said nonchalantly.

"He’s not my son." His voice was quiet when replying, but Horace shrugged.

"If they didn’t matter, you would have never agreed to our deal. I gathered how close your relationship is from Oskar. You mean a great deal to him, more than his father. It would be strange if it were one-sided. After all, you’re not a woman he’s in love with."
",1545,"2026-06-03T11:17:48.775Z","2026-06-03T11:17:51.400Z",1,"novelbin.me","3e99521db081332e7b498e174d46dcb0426702a31a278a58aacd7949bcddd45c","the-reborn-king-chapter-348","the-reborn-king-chapter-346",487,"https://novelzhen.com/images/covers/the-reborn-king-cover.jpg"]
