He sat alone in the gentlemen’s club with his guards standing by his side. The workers had all fled the city in the small grace period, being some of the lucky few to have enough money to make it worthwhile. From the backroom, a door opened, and an old man walked out holding a bottle, coming towards Oskar’s table.

"Why did you stay?" Oskar pointed to the seat before him, intrigued by what kept the old man in the city. The old man shrugged and took a seat. Before, he would have never dared to treat such a high-value customer so casually, but the ongoing series gave him confidence.

Pouring himself a glass of alcohol that was far beyond his paycheck, the old man smiled, "My bones can’t handle getting to another town or city." Taking a sip of the drink, he smirked, "Besides, when else will I get the chance to steal a drink?"

Oskar smirked and held his glass up before drinking himself. A knock on the door broke through the mood, and Oskar sighed. "Hide in the back. Staying here won’t do you any good." Oskar poured another glass of alcohol before giving the bottle to the old man.

One of the guards moved forward and opened the door. The man from the slums walked in with a cold face and sat before Oskar without saying anything. Behind him stood two men who were obviously criminals. "Nice place." The man picked up the glass before him and stared suspiciously at it. Oskar rolled his eyes, took a sip from his own glass, and handed it over. Taking the one from the crook’s hands, he leaned back.

"You followed through. A deal’s a deal." One of the guards threw a bag of jewels onto the table. From behind the crook, one of his men picked it up and counted, giving a single nod in agreement.

"A pleasure." The man took a sip but remained sitting, staring at Oskar. Oska looked at him with equally cold eyes, unlike before; this was his territory. Despite that, he knew she couldn’t drop his guard.’It worked before. It will again.’Once more, Oskar tried to think and act like Hoarce.

"Is there something else?" Oskar asked without care, looking at his fingernails.

"You gave me another condition for doing this for you—a connection with someone." The crook took a drink, smiling at how good the liquor was, "You see, I’ve got connections with some nobles. I wanted to know what the Underwells were." The man leaned forward with a smirk, "I thought an organisation, but instead it was the boggymen of the Empire. Why would a noble family of the Empire be good for me?"

The man’s voice went dangerous, and Oskar smiled, shaking his head. "Your connection is obviously useless. Who do you know? A Baron may be an Earl. The Underwells are good for you to know. Anyone smart enough to want to live makes a deal with them, like some guys made one with Konrad here. You do them favours, and in return, they will look away from certain crimes. I can get you that introduction. After all, when the Commonwealth falls, people like you will scramble to fill a void left behind."

The crook took a deep breath and laughed, "Work for a noble. Is that a joke?"

Oskar smiled and clicked his tongue, "They are only a noble in the sense that they have a rank. Otherwise, the Underwells are the most vile people you will ever meet in your life. The crimes you commit, whatever they are, are nothing in comparison to what those people do." Oskar paused and looked at the man deep in the eyes, "The future heir is a man whom I have spoken to numerous times. He is someone who finds torture a tool beneath him. No, instead, he will break a person without even laying a hand on them. You, me. We are nothing but toys for them, and they are the hounds of the Emperor. You won’t last without being beneath them."

The crook looked at Oskar for a few seconds and took a sip of his drink. "Our deal is done. Never come back to my territory." The man downed the remaining drink and left with his two men. Oskar watched and sighed, shaking his head. It would have been nice to have that connection, but he wouldn’t stay with people who were suicidal.

Putting a few spare gold coins on the table, Oskar stepped out of the club and looked at the city before him. In the distance, black smoke rose into the sky as the panicked screams of men and women echoed across the city.’Forgive me. But my family will survive.’His eyes hardened listening to the screams. He knew what it meant to follow the order.

The misery, destruction, and death it would bring. And he would do it again. All for the Laskas. All to keep the legacy going. He couldn’t risk letting himself hesitate. Not anymore. He did it once and was lucky to get a second chance. His uncle could have died because of it. He could have.

Even though he knew the Empire was suppressing him and his family. Even though he knew he was nothing but a source of amusement to Horace, he would do what had to be done. All to ensure the family survived.

"We’re leaving," Oskar told his two men and walked off. He had to stay on the move. He may have lost the main chance to leave Torun, but there would always be an escape route. He just had to find it.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Your Majesty. General Flander’s has arrived." Alfred nodded and waved the soldier away. Putting the book down, he gently stroked the cover, what he would title this one when it was finished, before stepping out. In the distance, he saw Marcus and William happily talking.

"William." Alfred walked over with a small smile, making the two turn. Marcus quickly saluted and lowered his head whilst William stepped forward, stretching his hand out for a handshake.

"Your Majesty. How have you been?" William asked with slight concern, "I heard about the Prince."

Alfred’s smile dropped, and he lowered his head. "Isra returned to deal with that. Enough, I can’t let my mind be split on these matters." Alfred looked at Torun and saw the black clouds of smoke rising out of it. "Did we do that?"

William looked towards Marcus, the man shaking his head, "It started internally." His words made Alfred smile as he thought about what Horace had ordered.

"Make sure to keep the Laska heir alive when we lay siege. He followed his end of the bargain." Marcus and William nodded, easily guessing what that bargain was. "How was the south?"

"Under control. The spread of the Pantheon in the conquered lands has gone well thanks to a few martyrs. The Church and Commonwealth forces chasing us seemed to have stopped allowing me to return, but I’ve made preparations just in case."

"Good." Alfred looked at Torun. "The fire, you think it will make the assault easier?"

"Definitely." Marcus cut in and smiled, "I’ve already noticed a drop in men manning the walls. The only issue is that the damage may be too severe once we gain access to the city."

"It’s fine. A city can be rebuilt." Alfred showed no change in emotion while watching. "Inform me when we will begin the full assault." Alfred turned and went back into his tent. Marcus looked at William in confusion.

"His Majesty is writing a book. Says it will change the world." William smirked and shook his head.

"It probably will." Patting his second’s shoulder, William watched the city. "When you take my position, there is one thing to keep in mind. His Majesty knows more than we do. He isn’t the smartest man in the world, but he has accidentally revealed a few things to me. He knows things he can never reveal to anyone, and it is your job never to delve too deep unless he wants you to."

Marcus nodded and looked at Alfred’s tent. "Understood, General."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Malbork has fallen, Your Grace. I couldn’t get close, but it seems Torun is under siege." The scout knelt before August and said with a quiet voice. August looked at him and took a deep breath.

"Leave." The scout nodded and quickly got away. Alone in his tent, August stood up and grabbed the knife on his table. Stroking the blade, he looked at himself in the reflection. Holding it to his own heart, his hands shook, and he knew he couldn’t do it himself.

No matter how much he said he would do anything for the family, killing himself was hard. He couldn’t order his men to do it either. "Michael." Whispering the man’s name, he knew that he was the only one who would do it for him. They didn’t like each other, but he knew Micheal would respect his commitment to his family if asked.
",1524,"2026-06-03T11:17:48.775Z","2026-06-03T11:17:51.400Z",1,"novelbin.me","b3043f8b3bb1134b1dcc79b2204bbe1f41d93e745200ae3ea9cde804da941d64","the-reborn-king-chapter-356","the-reborn-king-chapter-354",487,"https://novelzhen.com/images/covers/the-reborn-king-cover.jpg"]
