Opposite the heavy metal door, they heard a soft knocking. "You cut it close, Juluis," Bardas said in a joking tone, but was left awkwardly smiling, getting no reply. Beneath Julius’ hood, he could see the man’s deeply cold emerald eyes.

"Why is he here?" Julius looked at Cato with hate. The eunuch clicked his tongue and shrugged.

"Your little scheme is stupid and unreliable. If it weren’t because of this dog’s blackmail, you wouldn’t be alive still." Julius scoffed and pushed past. "Let us see. We need to know if this will work."

Julius froze and, with shaking hands, grabbed his hood. Pulling it down, the two were stunned into silence at the large burn that covered half his face. It had only started to heal properly, and neither could imagine how painful it must have been for him. Grabbing the top of his shirt, Julius pulled it down and showed a wound over his chest that had been carefully sewn up and treated.

"Happy." His voice was sharp, and the two meekly nodded. The man before them was vastly different to a few weeks ago, but they easily understood. Being forced to fake your death was one thing. Having half your face melted just for a political move was another. No man would be able to stay completely sane from it.

"I have your path cleared. We should be fine." Cato led the way. Walking through numerous dark corridors, they reached a wooden door and pushed it open. A painting in the Palace halls opened, and the brightness of it forced them to cover their eyes. Cato moved first and stepped out. With the coast clear, he called for the other two to follow him.

The three walked quickly, but hearing laughter in the distance, they froze. Julius lifted his hood back up and turned away as two servants turned the corner carrying laundry. Seeing Bardas and Cato, they quickly shut up and lowered their heads out of fear.

"We greet Lord Ammorian and Lord Cato." Speaking as softly as they could, Bardas caught one of them peeking towards Julius, wondering who the man with them was.

"You fucking idiot." His voice was venomous as he snarled at Cato, and walking before the two servants, he put a friendly smile on. "What did you see?" Asking the servants, they gulped.

"Nothing, Your Grace." Bardas watched them for a few seconds. One of them peeked at Julius again, and his eyes hardened.

"You should have kept your eyes to the ground."

"Not in here, you fool." Cato knew what Bardas was about to do and snapped. Sighing, he understood and looked to Julius.

"Help me real quick." Julius nooded and grabbed one of the servants, Bardas, the other. Covering their mouths, they dragged them to the hidden exit and quickly killed the two, only their muffled groans coming from behind the painting.

"You cleared our path," Julius said coldly, making Cato roll his eyes.

"People can act in a way you don’t expect. Anyway, hurry up. I have to clean that mess up afterwards." The three jogged through the halls of the palace, undisturbed, and headed into the room where the fake body of Julius was being kept. A large number of herbs rested on a small table. Bardas grabbed the body and threw it to the ground without care. Going to the table of herbs, he slowly grabbed a few and carefully cut them, measuring the exact amount of each herb.

Cato threw a set of clothes at Julius, the man quickly getting changed before being handed the mixture Bardas had made. "What is it?" Taking the small powder and herbs from Bardas, he scanned them suspiciously.

"That is Eternal Rest before it is turned into a poison."

"Are you kidding me?" Julius held it away from him in panic, almost dropping the concoction. "Are you trying to kill me, Bardas?"

"If I wanted you dead, I would have already killed you." Sighing, he took the mixture and inhaled its scent deeply. "Eternal rest is created using numerous herbs and plants, but the key ingredient is pollen from the roses in the north. This doesn’t have that. After a lot of trial and error through the years, it was found that you can mimic death using Eternal Rest just before it is completed. This will slow your heart, and to an observer, you will be no different from a corpse."

Bardas smiled happily, and looking at Cato, the eunuch sighed, "He’s not wrong. But keenly left out the detail that the antidote has to be given within a day, or you will die."

Bardas shrugged and forced the mixture back into Julius’ hands. "The funeral is in four hours. We will give it to you during it. I will do it myself, so don’t worry." Julius looked at the herbs and groaned before putting them in his mouth. Watching Bardas chew, Julius chewed the mixture into a fine paste and swallowed. Jumping on the table after it was done, he lay down and relaxed.

Taking a deep breath, he felt his heart beat come to a crawl and closed his eyes. Bardas opened his lips and forced down his throat a tasteless liquid. Whilst he was tired after taking the Eternal Rest, the liquid put him to sleep.

"We have four hours. You know what to do." Bardas said cautiously as he picked up the corpse.

"Let me deal with the mess you made." Pausing, he stared deeply into Bardas ’ eyes. "If this does not work, I will set the Emperor on you. Julius may live, but you are done." In the face of his threat, Bardas smiled and dragged the body away.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bells toll throughout the capital of Severia as hundreds of nobles flooded the grand Cathedral. The Palace wasn’t far from the Cathedral, and when the bells stopped, the large gates opened. The road to the Cathedral was left empty, with commoners and soldiers flanking it. Men, women and children cried out, demanding revenge or wishing for the Emperor’s wellbeing as Julius’ body was transported in an open coffin.

Seeing his burnt face, many cried louder, wishing for his soul, wondering who could be brutal enough to burn a man. Green gems were placed over his bandaged, closed eyes, and his outfit was full of luxury expected of a Prince. Bardas and Cato stood at the entrance of the Cathedral and watched with a blank expression. Unlike the Eunuch who didn’t care, Bardas hoped the plan worked. If it failed, he knew he would die.

Reaching the steps of the Cathedral, four soldiers picked up the coffin and carried it up as the Emperor and his children watched. Theodosius stepped forward after it had been carried inside and looked at the crowd of commoners.

"Today is a sad day for the Imperial family. For the Empire and for the world." Despite his words, his voice lacked any emotion. "My son has been taken from me by men who don’t understand their place in the world. And I vow that I will avenge my son, no matter the cost. I just hope you all will stand by me like you have faithfully done for so many years."

Turning his back on the cries of the people, Theodosius glanced at his children. Some cried for their brother, whilst others had a blank expression, not caring about the death. Yet the one child he wanted amongst them wasn’t there, annoying him. With a click of the tongue, he walked into the cathedral. The children all followed behind and lined up behind their father. Behind them, the highest-ranking nobility and trusted advisors of the Imperial family.

Bardas sneakily covered his mouth and drank the antidote, holding it in his cheeks. The Imperial family were the first to pay their respects and say their goodbyes. Some said a few words whilst others just clutched his hand. Despite that, all of them kissed their fallen kin. Next were the advisors and nobility. Numerous men and women walked over to the coffin and said their farewells to the Prince, some breaking out in tears to curry favour.

Bardas rolled his eyes and slowly moved forward, making sure not to swallow or spill a single drop of the antidote. After twenty minutes, he stepped forward and circled the coffin. Looking at Julius, he clutched his hand and leaned down, kissing his lips.

It was quick and disgusted him slightly, but forcing his mouth open with his own, he spat the antidote down his half-brother’s mouth and walked off. Bardas heard the people who watched whisper about his audacity in kissing Julius, but he didn’t care. It was something reserved only for his family, but he technically was. Looking at Theodosius, the man nodded once, satisfied with his actions.

Taking a seat, he watched and waited. A priest came forward and rattled off words, but none entered Bardas’ ears as he watched the casket. His heart raced; he was waiting for the moment to arrive. The first to notice something was the priest, who stopped his speech and turned around.

A hand shot out from the side of the casket and grabbed the edge. Shocked gasps were followed by silence as Theodosius stood up in horror. Julius sat up, the green gems falling from his face as he grabbed the blindfold on his face. Pulling it off, he looked around at the stunned faces watching him.

The priest fell on his arse and looked up in amazement, his eyes lighting up seeing a miracle be performed before him. He had felt the body; he knew it was dead. There was no other explanation. Watching the priest mutter a prayer, Julius stood up, but his weak legs nearly gave out, and he caught himself at the last second.

Looking around, he smiled at the crowd and spread his arms. Staring deeply into his father’s eyes, his smile became sinister. "I have seen it, and I have returned." The words Consatcne had told him to say came out smoothly, as he watched Theodoisus go pale, the fearful expression on his face being a sight he would never forget.
",1714,"2026-06-03T11:17:48.775Z","2026-06-03T11:17:51.400Z",1,"novelbin.me","0b79445bd9c903eccdedb21f681441b3d1272fd119ee8db823c1e6b3a2160fd7","the-reborn-king-chapter-394","the-reborn-king-chapter-392",487,"https://novelzhen.com/images/covers/the-reborn-king-cover.jpg"]
