Kissing his cheek, he looked him up and down with a satisfied smile. "You dress the part, cousin."

Cassius fastened his shoulder straps and walked outside the large tent. It was a different armour he usually wore, having a more luxurious design. Since Albus’ death, the men who were loyal to him had come to see Cassius as the new General of the Empire. Before, he had never officially accepted the title, but now that Magnus was ready to make his move, it was his time.

Before him, columns of men lined up, uncaring about the cold. The snow built up around their feet, and their helmets had a small white pile on them. Yet as soon as they saw Cassius, every man moved. Even though they weren’t in complete sync, the sound of over a thousand men shouting created a thunderous explosion.

"Are you sure you have the funds to keep them fed and paid?" Magnus’s smile told Cassius everything he needed, and, sighing, he walked forward, lifting his hand. Magnus understood his concern. The military was the crown’s greatest expense, but Magnus only acted because he was confident in his funds. Adding all his loyalists into the fold, they could easily afford to supply those collected by Cassius.

Cassius began shouting across the large field. Magnus felt like nothing could get rid of his smile, but seeing Horace walk over, he wiped it off his face.

"What is it?" In front of his rude tone, Horace rolled his eyes.

"The Silesians have sent word, they set up a line of communication for us and the Empire. They will offer no support other than this."

"Is that all?" Magnus said softly, walking off with Horace.

"If it were that, it would be fine." Horace frowned, "I’m sure you will hear about it soon, but the Slathans have declared their succession from the church. The reformist movement is what they are calling it. I lack any real intelligence inside the Holy Seat, so how they respond, you will have to gather."

Magnus shook his head and slyly smiled, "This is good. Theodosius and the church will become more isolated. Only the Gotics can be seen as an ally, and they can hardly be called reliable."

"You don’t understand." Horace clicked his tongue, "They have become a wild card. Whilst they are stagnant, their lands are an annoyance to invade. Unless internal conflicts break out, the reformist will make a stronghold, and the Slathans will become an enemy to us both. As confident as you are in Severia’s might, there is a reason they have survived for so long."

Magnus looked at him smugly, "You don’t understand the strength of Severia."

"Oh, right. Your endless wars with the Ammerians fill me with hope." Horace chuckled at Magnus’ cold eyes, "We have to move quicker. Any news from the Emperor?"

"The Crown Prince is dead," Magnus said bluntly. "I assume you did it, but if not, then it was probably the Emperor himself."

Horace froze, "You didn’t think to tell me this information."

"Like I said, I thought you did it. It benefited us, so I didn’t think to say anything." Horace took a few deep breaths at the news.

"This... complicates things." Horace grabbed his chin and fell into deep thought, "Why would he kill his own heir? Even if he didn’t want him to take the throne, it’s still a risky move."

"It could be several reasons. Maybe to blame me, or maybe he simply felt Julius was a challenge to his throne. Either way, he’s dead and we have to plan around it." Magnus coldly spoke, "I will be ready to challenge the throne within the next few weeks. My loyalists are still gathering their assets. In the meantime, head to the capital and figure out what is going on there. It’s annoying, but Theodosisus is good and keeping his stronghold clear of spies."

"You trust me with such a task," Horace said with fake happiness.

"No." Magnus bluntly replied, sighing, "But you have no reason to join with Theodosius. I assume you would rather die than become a traitor. I trust your loyalty to the Ammary Empire."

"If that is what you command." Horace playfully bowed and walked off. Magnus watched his back for a few seconds before looking back at Cassius. The previous line of men had broken and began to mingle, laughing and celebrating as Cassius ordered them to rest and feast.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"We’re heading to the capital?" In the carriage, Halfdan made himself comfortable and leaned back on one of the chairs.

"Yeah..." Horace let his words trail as he looked at the equipment he had brought with him.

"What is it?" Halfdan watched Horace’s expression, rarely seeing him in such deep thought.

"Magnus." Horace said coldly, "I don’t trust him. I know that we never would be able to, but he’s keeping us isolated." Horace paused and clicked his tongue, "We know he will use his puppet to take the throne and then, through marriage, have his family be the Empire’s rulers, but beyond that, I can’t trust he will keep his end of the bargain we have."

"Isn’t the plan to destabilise the Severians. It doesn’t matter whose on the throne." Halfdan said in a relaxed manner. "Even if he fails, we will have a civil war. That is unavoidable now."

"It’s not enough," Horace said with a frown. Picking up a small knife, he pointed it towards Halfdan, looking down at the small steel blade. "Right now, we have two very strong parties. If Magnus wins, Severia will become a stronger nation at the cost of the crown’s power. It’s the type of man he is. He will calculate what power is safe to give up in return for his treason. On the other hand, we have Theodosius. If he wins, the crown will stay strong, whilst Severia will be weaker than under Magnus. But its connection to the Church will still be strong."

Horace flipped the blade and put it away, grabbing another. "Magnus has already undermined us once, which nearly got us killed. He will stay with us until it is no longer necessary."

"So, what’s the plan?" Halfdan said with a sly smile. Horace looked at the new knife in his hands and played with it between his fingers.

"Chaos. How many people do you think want the throne? I’ve looked at some of the documents Magnus didn’t want me to see. Primarily, those surrounding the nobility of Severia. The Emperor has a really funny bastard alive."

"I thought only the one survived?" Horace shook his head and smiled. Stopping his hands, he leaned forward and bounced the knife in his hands.

"He would love a hidden ace. I’m sure of it. Then, if the Ammerians got word about the weakening state of the Severia, who could say? Maybe war might break out again." Halfdan watched Horace for a second before chuckling and closing his eyes,

’Scary fucker.’He couldn’t help but shake his head and feel lucky that he was no longer his enemy. Wiping the blade in his hand, he carefully put it away, checking a third.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"They’ve left," Petros said in a soft voice.

"Did they look through any of your things?"

"A few, but nothing of concern. It’s in line with his type of work to understand the people he needs to target. I left him be." Petros grabbed a book from the large bookshelf behind him and handed it over. "This is all I have on the Ammary’s. It’s out of date but should be enough."

"What page is about the Underwells?"

"73." Petros said instantly. Magnus flipped through the book and took a seat. Reading the page, he frowned.

"Esmond Underwell? Horace’s father."

"He’s dead or bedridden." Petros once again replied instantly, "I don’t know when exactly it happened, but he hasn’t been spotted for a while now. Like I said, it’s outdated. Either way, it doesn’t matter. That man is no longer a threat." Magnus nodded and carried on reading. It was annoying how little information there was, and some of it he didn’t know he could trust. he trusted Petro’s information networks, but after seeing Horace, he knew that he and his family would be the types to hide or forge information about themselves.

"Are we cutting connections with the Empire?" Petros asked, and Magnus fell into a deep thought.

After a few minutes, Magnus nodded and took a deep breath. "We have all we need. They are just an interfering power now. I’ve sent him away. He can’t be trusted."

"He will find out soon enough."

"It doesn’t matter. I have enough power to ignore any threat he poses." Magnus closed the book and handed it back to Petros. "Going forward, I’ll marry Valeria’s and Marius’ children to one another. Save a few for key alliances. Cassius can marry a good noble woman. In five years, we should have enough alliances."

Petros frowned, "You know it isn’t safe to marry relatives so closely related. Even peasants know this." Locking in on Magnus’ plans for Valeria and Marius, he warned of the risks.

"We have no choice. If a Maximus is going to sit on the throne, then we can only make it happen through marriage. We can’t be seen as traitors to the Empire. Not when the loyalists exist," Maximus said confidently, but seeing Petros’ glare, he sighed. "It can be done in one generation, Petros. I know it’s dangerous, but it is the safest way."

"Whatever you say." Petros waved his hand and returned to work.
",1624,"2026-06-03T11:17:48.775Z","2026-06-03T11:17:51.400Z",1,"novelbin.me","824eb963e831971e68143c0f78e6e6bd014a2f161047c784a00abb3923f2cccd","the-reborn-king-chapter-396","the-reborn-king-chapter-394",487,"https://novelzhen.com/images/covers/the-reborn-king-cover.jpg"]
