Despite being a day out, Magnus struck quickly. The siege towers he had prepared were rushed, and one collapsed in on itself on the approach to the wall, but the rest arrived, allowing men to pour out. The trenches prepared held them off for a while, and his heavy cavalry had decimated everything that it engaged, but it couldn’t stop the inevitable battle.

Octavius kicked out and knocked a man over as he turned to his left, covering an attack for Julius. The Emperor, despite not leading the battle, joined the battle for the wall, much to Octavius’ annoyance. He had asked and nearly begged Julius to stay back and be ready to retreat at any moment. He could still hear Julius chuckle and words in his mind.

’You said make them think I care about them. I must fight alongside them if I wish for them to fight for me.’It was logical that he couldn’t refuse, especially as he had advised him. Julius wore a different mask than usual. Unlike the one which covered half his face, his new silver one covered it all, his emerald eyes being the only thing that could be seen.

It was long dyed in blood, as he skillfully attacked, holding the line. Yet Octavoius knew he wasn’t a great warrior. He got lost in the bloodshed and had to be saved numerous times by him. He fought without care for himself. His armour was covered in scars and small wounds piled up over his body. It wasn’t a surprise that he wasn’t registering the pain. For a man who was burned alive, nothing could compare to it.

"YOUR EMPEROR FIGHTS BESIDE YOU!" Octavius screamed out as he blocked another strike aimed at Julius. The young Emperor didn’t even acknowledge it as he blocked an attack and fought. His attack missed, but Julius didn’t care, stepping forward to keep the pressure on. "DO NOT EMBARRASS YOURSELVES! FIGHT FOR HIM LIKE HE FIGHTS FOR YOU!"

With the rallying cry, Octavius felt his men increase the intensity of their attack, pushing Magnus’ forces back slightly. As they gained a few inches of ground on the wall, he clicked his tongue, blocking another attack and countering. No matter what they did, every man they killed was replaced by two more, as the wall got more and more crowded.

They held firm, but it was only a matter of time before the retreat would be called.’Hundreds must have died already. Magnus must know he can’t keep up with these types of tactics. He will run out of men before he reaches Antila.’Frowning, he blocked another attack. ’No, he just needs to kill Julius. Once he’s dead, there is no suitable replacement for the throne. The nobility will flock to Magnus’s cause and support his puppet.’

Octavius quickly realised the problem halfway through the battle. Magnus could sacrifice his whole army as long as it meant he managed to kill Julius. Magnus would never appear at the front of danger, and even if his puppet was killed, what would stop him from directly taking the throne for himself instead?

"YOUR MAJESTY!" Octavius moved closer to Julius and grabbed his shoulder. Pushing him back, he defended the barrage of attacks, a few slipping through and lightly injuring him. "YOU MUST LEAVE!"

"WHAT!?" Julius tried to push past, but Octavius stopped him as his men quickly filled the gap the two left. Octavius heard Julius’ heavy panting and grabbed his mask, slightly lifting it off his face to free his mouth. His face was drenched in sweat, and through the eye holes, he saw Julius’ bloodshot eyes.

’If I don’t stop him, he may drop dead from exhaustion before anything.’Octavius forced Julius closer to the staircase, away from the battle, as the Emperor tried to return to battle. "You are in no state to continue fighting. You are the Emperor, your health is too important to the war effort."

"BULLSHIT!" Julius screamed as he drew his sword, "YOU TOLD ME TO GET THEIR RESPECT!"

"And you have it." Octavius stumbled a little as men pushed past him. He quickly caught Julius, trying not to push him off the wall. "But you are about to collapse. You are covered in wounds, and you are hardly able to breathe under your mask."

Julius grabbed the silver mask on his face and pulled it off. Slamming it into Octavius’ chest, he smiled. "There." Octavious grabbed the mask before it fell to the ground and handed it back to Julius.

"Your Majesty, Magnus does not need to reach Antila. All he needs is for you to be dead. Please, I beg you, retreat to the second line and prepare the defence. The walls will not hold longer than half an hour anyway." Octavius calmly said as he watched his Emperor.

Julius looked down at his bloodied mask and clicked his tongue. His rationality was slowly coming back after being taken from the battle. Putting it back on, he shook his head and ran down the steps, leaving the wall. Octavoius looked at the wall and slammed his fist into his chest a few times to hype himself up and get back into the mindset of the battle.

With a loud battle cry, he refitted his shield and returned to the front line. His plan wasn’t only to get Julius to leave, but also to let himself recapture his breath and energy. Pushing through his men, he jumped forward and plunged his sword deep into an unsuspecting enemy.

------------------------

Julius walked through the city after getting far enough from the wall. Looking back at it, he saw the large frenzy that was taking place on it, as part of the defence slowly collapsed. The attackers ran down the wall and flooded into the city. In the areas where the defence broke, streaks of fire flew into the sky, as men shot burning arrows. It was a small signal to tell the rest of the defenders where the defence was broken.

Julius shook his head and arrived at the second defence. In every street, soldiers waited with spear walls, as a gap opened for Julius. He knew that some Skirisher forces hid all around, waiting for Magnus’ forces to get deeper into the city.

"Has the final line been prepared?" Julius asked Ramile who Octavius left in charge of the second defence.

"We have a clear line to retreat out of the city, Your Grace." Ramile softly spoke. "As Octavus predicted, Cassius didn’t surround the city when he saw the large reserve force in the distance.

"Good." Julius smiled and walked past. Looking around, he took a seat and took his mask off. Looking down at it, he wiped the blood off and saw his distorted reflection. Reaching behind his chest piece, he pulled out a small rag he had prepared and wiped his face, the white cloth turning grey from the amount of sweat it absorbed.

Julius looked at his soldiers, who were waiting for the attackers, and said nothing. He didn’t need to give a rallying cry; the grim determination was already apparent on their faces, even if they tried to hide it. They spoke to one another with friendly voices, laughing and joking. It was a stark contrast to the raging battle on the wall, but Julius knew it was so they didn’t go crazy in anticipation.

Throwing the rag onto the ground, he fitted his mask back on and leaned back against the nearby wall, waiting. His legs were stiff, and rubbing them, he knew that his rest wouldn’t last long.

-----------------------------

Magnus climbed onto a part of the wall that was already firmly in his forces’ hands and looked into the city. It was a clear setup by Octavius and Julius, trying to funnel his forces through a certain path while leaving them an escape.

"What do you think?" Turning to Cassius, the rugged Commander wiped the dirt from his face and frowned.

"We have to do what they want." Pointing out a random part of the city, Magnus followed his finger and saw a small force hiding between the buildings, "They have ambushes waiting for us to not stick to their plan. And even if we split and tried to find another way, we won’t have the men to break through. It will be a slaughter."

Magnus frowned and sighed, "So all we can do is attack how they want us to."

"Not exactly. Sure, we will go the way they want, but who says we have to spread it evenly? We know where the Emperor and Octavious were defending themselves from. It is safe to assume that it will be the hardest part to assault. Therefore, the weakest point should be there." Cassius pointed to the chokepoint furthest from Julius. "Apply pressure at all the chokes, but send out the best men to assault that point. When they break through, we will charge everything we have remaining through it and encircle them before they can escape."

"Do it." Magnus didn’t hesitate to let his cousin do what he planned. Getting a nod from Cassius, he reached behind his back and ripped off a horn that was tied to his waist. Blowing into it several times, he moved quickly and grabbed one of Magnus’ banners that had been brought to the top of the wall. Handing it to a nearby soldier, he ordered him to wave it high into the sky.
",1595,"2026-06-03T11:17:48.775Z","2026-06-03T11:17:51.401Z",1,"novelbin.me","38d8526b14ef0dde366604df9f5816a99a1c2d6ab8197229e4006f398888e56a","the-reborn-king-chapter-417","the-reborn-king-chapter-415",487,"https://novelzhen.com/images/covers/the-reborn-king-cover.jpg"]
