His arms were tired, and his surroundings were covered in bodies of friend and foe alike. Looking at Cassius before him, he could tell the man was in an equally terrible state. The two had gotten lost in the battle at some point, but after the adrenaline rush they used to fuel their fight wore off, they realised how exhausted their bodies were. It was a surprise to Rameil that he had collapsed yet, and each time his body told him to give up and collapse, he heard Octavius’s orders in his mind.

’Stall. Stall them for as long as you can. You don’t need to win, and you can run if necessary, but stall.’Taking that order to heart and pushing git to the extreme, Ramiel led his Templars to hold the choke that Cassius was rushing into and held the line firmly, only falling back once. He didn’t know how many of his Templars died, but he was sure it was less than the number of men Cassius brought.

With a silent prayer, he tried to lift his sword again, but couldn’t. An attack flew his way, and Ramiel mobilised what little energy he had to lift his damaged shield to block the attack. The heavy sword strike clashed with it, and the wooden shield broke a little more. Rameil fell backwards and looked up in a daze. His ears rang as the sound of men shouting was muffled.

Someone grabbed his back and tried to pull Ramiel back. Only getting dragged a few inches, he was stopped as warm crimson blood covered his head and upper body. The Templar who tried to grab Rameil off the front collapsed, losing the light of life. Rameil snapped out of his daze after being covered in blood, but it was too little too late.

One of Cassius’ men reached out and grabbed him. Holding a blade over his throat, he pointed them towards the Templars. "STOP!" One of the soldiers called out for Cassius, the man, to raise his voice. "We have Grand Templar Rameil. Lay down your arms. Our war is not with the church, but the Imperial Family."

Saying everything Cassius told him, the two sides split up, leaving a meter-long gap between each other as they stared one another down like vicious beasts, waiting for the fighting to break out again. Raamiel looked at his Templars before the pile of corpses surrounding his feet. Shaking his head, he opened his mouth.

"Put down your weapons..." Ramiel was out of his daze by now, but he was tired beyond belief. He had none of the herbs to help him stay energised, nor was he given many chances to catch his breath throughout the battle. "Surrender yourselves." Even as he gave the order, Rameil’s mind still thought of Octavius’s order.

’Stall.’Rameil wasn’t an idiot and knew what prisoners meant for an enemy. For a force like the Templars, where every man was a highly skilled fanatic, not restraining them was a disaster. Of course, Cassius could simply kill them all, but Ramiel had quickly gathered in his fight with Cassius that he didn’t wish to strike a lethal blow that Ramiel had no chance of surviving. Sure, his attack, if they hit, could have killed him, but if he was treated quickly enough, there was a slim but real chance he could have lived from any of them.

’He wants me alive. They don’t want to make an enemy of the church.’Rameil smiled to himself. Even Magnus knew it was foolish to make an enemy of Constance. The Church authority had waned abroad over the years, but in Severia, it remained as strong as usual. Magnus didn’t have the political clout or the reason to become its enemy. After all, in the long run, consent would lend legitimacy to his puppet.

Ramiel happily gave himself up and didn’t try to fight. All he could do was stall for Octavius and Julius right now, even if it meant becoming a POW.

-----------

"STAND FIRM!" Magnus shouted at the top of his lungs as he backed up behind his men, who charged to intercept the flanking force. Although there weren’t many men left remaining on the wall, there were enough to meet the attacking force. Magnus clicked his tongue and looked out in the distance, where he had last seen Cassius. From high above, he saw a trail of bodies littering the path he took. It was impossible to tell who they belonged to, and for a second, Magnus’s heart froze, wondering if his cousin was one of the many sprawled across the floor.

Following the trail, he saw the bulk of the force that Cassius led, standing around, unmoving as they led a single-file line of soldiers in white armour.’They broke the Templars. Good.’Magnus sighed in relief; the sight he was seeing would only be possible if Cassius were still alive.

’I can buy him twenty more minutes.’Looking at the opposite wall, he saw the other half of Octavius’ flanking force scale atop the wall and begin the battle over there. Other than the main northern entrance, which Mganus had firmly under his control, every inch of the wall had fighting. The defending forces on the southern wall were slowly pushed back as arrows rained down from above on the defenders within the city. They desperately fought to hold the line and keep the escape route protected, but every minute, more and more men had to be redirected to defend.

He knew Octavius had risked a lot on this plan. If it failed, Julius risked losing many of his men, but at the same time, if it worked, Magnus could potentially be stuck in the city.’Hurry up, Cassius. We don’t have a lot of time.’Magnus looked back at the fighting a few meters away from him and sighed. Pulling his sword, he knew that he would have to fight soon.

--------------------------------

"Your Majesty." Octavius came before Julius and lowered his head. "I have done all I can. I must ask you to please leave the city. I can’t predict how this will go now." Looking up at the distant walls, he saw his plan had finally begun.

"Again with this Octavius." Julius scoffed as he listened to the battle raging all around him.

"Your Majesty." Octavius seriously said as he lowered his head deeper, "If I die, although the balance of power will shift, the war won’t be lost. You however must live. As long as you survive, victory always remains." Octavious looked around, guiding Julius to follow his eyeliner. "This is mayhem, and if what I have planned fails, we can’t let it be a complete loss. You still have many allies who will rally behind you."

Julius took a deep breath and looked around. Looking up, he saw Magnus’ men approaching the gate controls. Although Octavius was using everything to defend them, and broke many of Magus’ men, it was still a coin toss if they would hold. Closing his eyes, he nodded and frowned, "Fine. But Octavius. The Empire still needs you. I won’t permit your death in this city."

Octavius saluted and lowered his head, "Your will is my command." Octavius looked to his right at one of the runners who was carrying supplies back and forth. "Give my order to the gate controllers. Have them lift it." The runner didn’t question the order and ran off to carry out the order. Julius looked at Octavius and smiled.

"Win, and when you return, I will reward you with whatever you desire." Octavius nodded at Julius’ stern words and took a deep breath. He had no plans on dying and knew that the battle wasn’t lost.

As the gate rose, Octavius saw his cavalry outside, protecting the gate now. Julius walked out and quietly spoke to Cyril. In a few seconds, he climbed up behind him and wrapped his hands around his waist. The horses rode off into the distance, being chased by Magnus’ cavalry, but with a headstart, they easily escaped. Octavius watched the gate lower, and his eyes sharpened. Going to a nearby regiment, waiting for orders, he smiled.
",1370,"2026-06-03T11:17:48.775Z","2026-06-03T11:17:51.401Z",1,"novelbin.me","6e8268fb62a9c02dd1e929ddc307a47737d9aee61fe6d6cba4b266e5ed5aa5ba","the-reborn-king-chapter-420","the-reborn-king-chapter-418",487,"https://novelzhen.com/images/covers/the-reborn-king-cover.jpg"]
