He couldn’t help but feel that Octavius’ reinforcements were an endless horde that were ordered to do nothing but stop him alone. Being pushed back, Cassius flew into the soldier behind him. A pained moan left his mouth as he watched a sword fall onto a shield that blocked the strike for him.

Rapidly blinking, he pushed himself up with a heavy breath and swung his sword. There was nothing else he could do other than fight. He was surrounded, and it was only a matter of time before Octavius gave chase. Cassius gritted his teeth and looked around. Numerous thin alleys littered the path around him, and Cassius quickly came to a choice. Stay and die or flee.

It was simple and easy. Although his men may die, that was always a risk in war. There was no reason for him to die alongside them. Falling back, a solid replaced his position and joined the shield wall. Every man was too caught up in their own emotions, whether it was the bloodlust of battle or fear of death; none realised Cassius’ movements as he silently moved.

Cassius popped out at the back of his small force and looked at them. Looking down the street they had been leaving from, bodies littered every inch, the telling sacrifice both sides made. Cassius looked back at his men and took a deep breath, holding the air in his lungs.

"BREAK! IT IS NOW EVERY MAN FOR HIMSELF!" Shouting to them, Cassius ran through the alleyway. Clicking his tongue, he stopped quickly and cut the straps holding his chest piece on, letting the heavy metal fall. Taking off his shield and finally his chainmail, he ran with only a sword in hand and little protection. It was a risk to leave himself so defenceless, but it gave him a head start compared to the others. Behind him, he heard the sound of fighting get weaker and the sound of men running increase. Some tried to copy Cassius and escape through the alleys, whilst others let themselves in near by building to try and hide.

Cassius slowed down and looked at the northern wall. His entire plan had been to escape through it, but the more he thought about it, the more he realised that it would be pointless. He knew his cousin. He would have left and joined the reserve force that was marching on the city. The city would eventually fall to their side, but it was a question of when.

Right now, it was firmly in Octavius’s hands with a few skirmishes raging around. Cassius took a deep breath and looked around. Seeing a nearby house, he grabbed the door handle and tried opening it. Releasing the doors that were locked, he moved on, not daring to risk breaking in. One mistake would get him caught. He could hear Octavius’ men in the distance spreading out and hunting for him and those who escaped.

Running to another house and then another, he finally found a door unlocked. Throwing himself in, he slammed the door shut behind him and locked up. Not daring to be spotted, he walked into the bedroom and grabbed the thin sheet. Going to the cupboard, he let himself grab any of the clothes left behind and crouched in the cooner. Covering himself with everything, he tightly held the dagger in his hand and patiently waited.

------------------------

Marching with his army, Magnus quickly approached the POWs that Cassius had taken and broke away. Walking towards them, he realised all of them were Tempalrs and smiled. "Which one speaks for them?" Asking the soldier leading the prisoners, he followed his nod towards Ramie, who walked with closed eyes, muttering a prayer.

Magnus instantly recognised the Grand Templar and scoffed, "This is no way to treat a man of such faith. Cut him loose." No one questioned Magnus’ order and walked over to Ramiel, cutting the bonds around his arms and legs. Free, Ramiel paid no attention to his captors and continued to pray and walk.

Magnus lip twitched at the blatant disrespect, but took a deep breath. He knew the Tempalrs were all fanatics and the Grand Templars especially so. Walking alongside Ramiel, Magnus kept a safe distance but waited for him to finish his prayer. Minutes passed, hearing the quiet muttering come from the black man, but eventually Ramiel stopped and opened his eyes.

"Freeing me from my bonds will not change my opinion of you." Ramiel bluntly said. Magnus stiffly smiled but shook his head.

"I know. If I could, I would not have any of the Templars in chains. After all, you are servants of God. Many of you have even fought for the Empire in the war against the heathens. But we can’t all have what we want." Magnus bitterly spoke, making Ramiel chuckle.

"You are reaching for something that doesn’t belong to you. Now that the Empire is being led by a new Blessed of Sol, who are you to vie for the throne?"

"Blessed of Sol. I don’t even believe the child in the west resurrected, let alone Julius. It’s all a ploy to make the nobility think they have someone special leading them. Even if they don’t believe it, they will keep the ruse up." Magnus spoke with certainty, making Rameil dangerously squint.

"The Emperor in the West definitely is a Blessed One. Or he would have been executed by His Holiness Sameul as a heretic. And Julius..." Remail paused. "What man deliberately burns half their face to keep a ruse up?"

"A madman who is incredibly bitter." Magnus scoffed. "Let’s end this pointless conversation; there’s no way we can change each other’s minds and focus on something worthwhile. The church. How much value are you to it?"

Rameil chuckled at the question and shook his head, "Do you expect His Holiness to exit the war because of me?" Rameil chuckled again and shook his head, "I appreciate the value you place on me, Lord Maximus, but I am worthless compared to the importance His Holiness places on Julius winning this war."

"I don’t think so." Magnus smiled, "The Church has already lost the Sword of Sol in his schims. If Constance loses another of his greatest supporters, the church will be in a tight situation." Magnus closed his eyes and thought for a second, "I had help from the Empire in the East, you know." His words weren’t a surprise to Rameil, who Constance had already told, "But I have no plans on staying with them. Sol is my one true God, and the church is his home on Gaia. Besides, they tried to assassinate my daughter after I broke contact with them."

"This... We did not know this."

I kept it hidden to not show any weakness, but I fear that they have moved on to another candidate for the Empire."

"You mean to tell me that His Majesty Julius is in cahoots with the Empire. There is no need for him to do so. He already has the support of the Holy Seat. He knows such a thing would destroy his and Constance’s relationship." Ramiel watched as Magnus shook his head.

"Julius is a bitter man right now, but he is not foolish enough to do such a thing. Besides, as you have said, he has no need. But there is one other man who is desperate for power without many allies." Magnus thought of Bardas.

"Lord Ammorian. He is His Majesty’s ally."

Magnus snorted, "Is that what you truly think. Bardas is loyal to himself alone. Why do you think he helped kill his half-brothers and sisters under Theodosius’ orders?" Magnus could see some hesitation on Ramiel’s face and smiled, "My offer to Constance isn’t to leave the war in exchange for you, but to deal with Bardas in exchange for you and the information I provided."

Ramiel fell into thought, and Magnus kne when he had him. He couldn’t win the war with might alone. He needed to cause friction in Julius’ core supporters, and whilst he wasn’t sure that Bardas had made contact with Horace, he wouldn’t doubt it. Horace didn’t care who sat on the throne as long as it caused conflict in the Empire. Bardas was the perfect candidate to approach after him.

It had been annoying that Bardas was patient and waited for the chance to strike against Julius. He would help him until his opportunity came. He needed Bardas gone to allow him to act within the capital.

"You can send word to His Holiness, but I do not know if it will be enough."

"As long as you think it’s enough to get his attention, that is enough." Magnus smiled and sighed. "If I do take the throne, I promise you this. My reign will be closely linked to the church. You are not my enemy. Only the Cosmatos dynasty is." Rameil nodded, not truly believing his words, as the two walked in silence.

-----------------------------

Octavius led the march outside the city. He had hunted many of Magnus’s men down within the walls after encircling them. Those who caught on quickly managed to escape, and whilst he didn’t manage to kill as many as he wanted, it was enough to put a dent into Magnus’ forces.

Leading those he captured out of the city, he left it unguarded. He wouldn’t be able to hold it when Magnus’s reinforcement arrived.’I must end this on the field. One more battle.’Planning his next move, he thought of the landscape nearby and grinned, thinking of the perfect place to meet Magnus.’For now, I must see His Majesty. I need to see if he is okay.’
",1636,"2026-06-03T11:17:48.775Z","2026-06-03T11:17:51.401Z",1,"novelbin.me","605123264fcb77e420cc9d0c5faa275a3291da4980384c5d28f578be45e223b4","the-reborn-king-chapter-422","the-reborn-king-chapter-420",487,"https://novelzhen.com/images/covers/the-reborn-king-cover.jpg"]
