Gaurds patrolled the streets, occasionally eyeing every man and woman they passed. His clothing had been changed to match that of the nobility who could afford housing on the street, courtesy of Bardas. Looking at the manor before him, he kept track of when the guards rotated.

Looking up at the sun, he made a rough estimate of the time and refocused on the front gate. A few minutes passed, and the guards changed. There were only thirty seconds when the gate was left unguarded.

’Every five hours, they change during the day. On the night shift, they don’t rotate.’Getting up, Horace strolled down the street with the information in mind, ready to plan his next attack on the council.

Walking past another soldier patrolling the street, he subtly clicked his tongue. Janus had reacted quicker than he expected after Petrus died. The roads where the council members lived were heavily patrolled, watching for any anomalies. He was sure that his linger on the road had been caught, but acting as a noble of the Empire, no soldier could approach him easily and apprehend him. If they acted wrong and Horace was truly a member of the nobility who just enjoyed lazing around, it was cause to ruin their lives, potentially sealing their execution if they arrested him.

Taking a deep breath, he walked down the street to the carriage Halfdan was waiting on, and climbed in. "Are we acting tonight?" Halfdan asked as he started the carriage. Horace took a deep breath and thought, his finger tapping his armrest.

"No. Thirty seconds isn’t enough time to infiltrate the manor. We need to strike whilst he is on the move."

"He will be guarded when he moves. Me and you alone aren’t enough to attack." Halfdan pointed out the obvious flaw, making Horace smile.

"Luckily, we have someone on the council. Food is slowly becoming a luxury for the common man. I’ll talk to Bardas to see if we can make the situation worse within the city. We strike then." Horace closed his eyes and took a deep breath. Although he was used to spending time away from the Empire, after being gone for so long and so far away, he couldn’t help but miss it. It was something he never thought he would think.

’I must be exhausted if I’m thinking like this.’Bitterly chuckling to himself, he relaxed.’Once Bardas has enough power on the council, it will be over. Not much longer.’Taking another deep breath, Horace slowly drifted off to sleep, taking a small nap. Looking over his shoulder, Halfdan saw him fall asleep and sighed, wondering when he would be able to.

------------------------------------------

"Your Holiness. A letter." Gabriel walked into Constance’s office and placed the sealed envelope in front of Constance. Looking at it, Conatsnce frowned, seeing it was from Magnus.

’Good day, Your Holiness.

I know we are currently at war, but as a faithful servant of the Church, I do not wish to burn all relations with you. In the recent battle, I have taken Grand Templar Ramiel as hostage along with a few hundred Templars. They will be cared for until a deal is made or the war is over.’

Constance clicked his tongue, reading the first line, but nodded in satisfaction that Magnus wasn’t foolish enough to kill such an important figure of the Church. He knew that war could have unfortunate circumstances and easily justify Ramiel’s death.

’Whilst I am not ignorant enough to use the Grand Templar’s life as a bargaining chip to see your exit from the war, I just wished to show my goodwill to you.’

’We should not be enemies, Your Holiness, it is in neither of our interests. That is why I will share some vital information that will benefit you and me. Before my declaration of war to push Livius Tatius, more commonly known as Ash,claim an agent of the Ammary Empire, Horace Underwell approached me.’

Constance smiled, reading that. It meant Bardas and Julius hadn’t lied to him.’Horace is in Severia. What is Alfred planning to send someone like him here?’Tapping the table, he thought for a moment before reading on.

’But I have cut all ties with Horace and the Empire. I am no one’s puppet, and their use ended once I got my hands on Livius. Due to this, Horace attempted to assassinate my daughter and foil my plans.’

’His goal isn’t a puppet but chaos. He does not care who sits on the Throne by the end. It was brief, and you may know more, but he did not strike me as a vengeful person. He wouldn’t have dared to attack my daughter because of a simple end of the partnership. I had my suspicions, as just before it happened, I sent him to Antila. It was only later that I discovered he had been meeting with Bardas.’

’I do not know his plan, but I believe it is in all our best interests that Horace and Bardas’s partnership come to an end. I may not like the Cosmatos dynasty, but I prefer it over Bardas being Emperor.’

’Sighed, Sol’s loyal servant, Arch-Duke Magnus Maximus.’

Constance threw the letter on the table and leaned back. With a deep chuckle, he shook his head. "He really is a funny man."

Constacne muttered to himself, letting Grabriel read the letter. After a minute, the Grand Templar frowned, "He obviously wants to sow discord between you, Julius and Bardas."

"Yes." Constacne sighed, "But I don’t think it’s a lie what he wrote. Julius said Bardas has been acting behind his back, meeting with someone. He had no clue who, and whilst Magnus may be lying about having this information, it does align with Julius’ discovery."

"Shall we warn His Majesty?" Gabriel asked with a cold voice, waiting for the opportunity to be released.

"If we do, we will be in Magnus’ debt. He wants something from this." Tapping his desk, Constance frowned. "I won’t leave the war, I have too much invested in Julius’ victory. But I can at least offer Magnus the chance for his family to continue existing."

"His Majesty won’t like that."

"Julius will have to accept. I won’t accept another answer. Julius needs me more than ever. He will accept what I want." Constacne grabbed a paper from the side and began to quickly write. Putting it in a letter and adding his seal, he handed it over to Garbeil.

"Make sure this reaches the Regent of the Empire. Also, increase the number of Templars stationed in Antila. I have been waiting for a chance to get Bardas, as has Julius. This is the perfect chance."

"It will weaken Julius, getting rid of him right now." Gabriel countered. Shaking his head, Constance shrugged.

"He is good at his job but loyal to no one. An enemy who is openly antagonistic is better than one who pretends to be servile." Constance waved his hand, ending the conversation, "You are the only one I can trust to make sure this is delivered. No one is to be in control of this letter until you hand it over to the Regent. Is that clear, Gabriel?"

"Your Will is my command, Your Holiness." With a bow towards Constacne, Gabreil left the room. Alone in his room, Constance looked at the letter Magnus sent once again and chuckled.
",1243,"2026-06-03T11:17:48.775Z","2026-06-03T11:17:51.401Z",1,"novelbin.me","d99ad7e288a78609e19abca594b01edad5580954a6ddccefe823b52d87012db6","the-reborn-king-chapter-425","the-reborn-king-chapter-423",487,"https://novelzhen.com/images/covers/the-reborn-king-cover.jpg"]
