Taking a deep breath, his heart relaxed knowing he had finally returned home. Although he would return to work if ordered, Alfred gave him a small leave after the work he had done. Hearing rumours of what happened after his departure, Horace couldn’t be sure if it was a success, but at least it weakened the Severian military. That was all that mattered, delaying any chance of war until the Empire made its advancement under Alfred’s watch.

Stepping through the doors of the castle, Amelia stood with her usual disinterested expression. Staring into Horace’s eyes, she lowered her head. "Welcome back, Husband." Horace nodded and looked to her left. Beside Amelia, a young toddler looked up at Horace. Her short black hair was much like her mother’s, with bright black eyes. Horace didn’t care about the fact that his daughter looked more like Amelia and focused on the baby boy in the nanny’s hands behind the two of them.

"Has he been named yet?" His voice didn’t have the usual joy one would expect from a father. Amelia shook her head and patiently waited. Looking down at his son, he gazed into the child’s brown eyes that were hardly open. He had a thin set of hair that was blond in colour, but Horace could see that the roots were slowly turning brown, showing it was his child. Even without that, the boy looked a lot like him.

Amelia shook her head and watched as Horace fell into thought about what to name his son. "Benjamin. Benjamin Underwell." Looking at Amelia, she nodded a single time in understanding. Walking on and no longer paying attention to his children, Amelia quickly followed behind.

"His Majesty has been using the castle for his experiments."

"I know Horace." Coldly replying, he shrugged, "Now that I have returned, they will end. His Majesty promised me this much."

"I am thankful for that." Horace shot her a glare. Rolling her eyes, Amelia carried on, "The noise they made was annoying. Don’t worry, I didn’t do anything to hinder them." Horace stared at her for a few seconds before looking away and speeding up.

"I will be resting. Do not disturb me unless necessary." Amelia paused and lowered her head.

"Rest well, Husband." Waiting for the sound of his footsteps to disappear, Amelia walked to a nearby room and grabbed one of the books on the shelf. Lazily lying on the sofa, she opened the book and read in silence.

------------------

"Have you heard the report Horace gave?" Taking a seat next to Isra, Alfred sighed and threw the paper he had him write up before being allowed to rest. Isra picked it up. As she read on her gaze went colder.

"Is this true?"

"A matter of time before Constacne starts bragging about it." Alfreed clicked his tongue and chuckled, unable to decide if he should be pissed, bewildered or amused by what happened. "He really does have a black heart, that guy. Making his own brother a Blessed One."

"You think it’s fake?" Isra asked. Although she wanted to agree with Alfred, hearing the report that Julius managed to make the Moon crystal glow, she had no choice but to believe it. Alfred scoffed and leaned back.

"It’s all a bit coincidental, don’t you think. Constance suffers two schisms, one from me, a Blessed One, and the other from the most senior Grand Templar and a man heralded as Sol’s Sword. He needs a win and religious legitimacy; now he has it, and it’s his own brother. Tell me I’m crazy for believing he faked it."

"Tha..." Isra’s words trailed as she realised Alfred’s point. Alfred smiled and chuckled again.

"Let’s not forget Julius was crowned Emperor in a strange time. His father was to be arrested for treason aswell as fighting a civil war. Legitimacy is everything, and what is better than God’s divine blessing?" Leaning on Isra’s shoulder, he sighed, "I just don’t know how he faked it, but I’m sure he did. He released proof of identifying a Blessed One. Julius was never like that; Constance would have noticed and acted sooner if that were the case. Not out of love for his brother but hate for his father."

"Should we have Alice look into this?" Looking at Alfred’s hand that played with her hair, she knew he was in deep thought.

"Do it. After that, I need to summon Catherine and Abu. It’s time to start the first stage of our military reform." Isra jumped up, forgetting that Alfred held her hair and nearly pulled it off. She winced for a second but quickly refocused.

"The musket is done?" Isra asked in complete surprise. Alfred stared at her and chuckled, shaking his head.

"No. I was an idiot previously. There was a weapon I could make that would be easier. The cannon. We have gunpowder, and luckily, I pretty much know how to make a cannon. It’s far less technical than the musket. Abu will provide the men to begin construction, and Catherine will make the preparations to make ships that can house cannons."

Isra’s smile widened as she dove into Alfred’s chest and hugged him, "Soon, Alfred. Soon, your ambition will be achieved."

Alfred wrapped his hands around Isra, returning her tight hug. Leaning back into the sofa, he lay down, letting her lie atop his body. Her head rested on his chest as she looked up into his eyes.

"I hope, I really hope that across the oceans, the world isn’t only inhabited by savages." Alfred gently said as he looked to the ceiling. "A world where only this continent has civilised life would be too boring."

"It would be nice to see that," Isra said with a delicate smile. The two sat in silence as Alfred fell into deep thought about the future. Looking down at his wife, he felt his heart soften slightly.

"When the children are older, and our presence is not required as much, would you want to see the world?" His words were a shock to Isra.

Isra’s eyes widened as she stared at him, "Can we do that? I mean, we’re monarchs."

"Who cares what others say in twenty, thirty years. When Edward is older and can be trusted, I’ll make him regent whilst we go on a very important diplomatic mission." Isra chuckled and flipped over, laying her chest on Alfred’s own and looking into his eyes.

"We would need to justify it." Isra paused and playfully smiled, "Like a diplomatic mission. Preferably, one to a place on a beach would be lovely. One that has good wine and cool air." Alfred smiled and wrapped his arms around her neck.

"I can see it already." Leaning over and planting a deep kiss on her lips, he pulled away, leaving Isra wanting more. "A nice late-night meal under the moons with soft music in the background. Of course, we would discuss the future of the Empire."

"Of course." Isra leaned down and kissed him again, pulling away with a suggestive smile, "I’ll wait for that day. Promise me you won’t forget."

"I promise."
",1203,"2026-06-03T11:17:48.775Z","2026-06-03T11:17:51.401Z",1,"novelbin.me","734085b3970fa902f2ede310c80a270bdede01931820d9dc28b6d9cacdbef8a1","the-reborn-king-chapter-436","the-reborn-king-chapter-434",487,"https://novelzhen.com/images/covers/the-reborn-king-cover.jpg"]
