Whilst they couldn’t wear their heavy plated armour given to them as Templars, they at least had their weapons. Each one dressed as a clergyman of the Pathenon, the long robes able to hide their weapons and light leather and chainmail armour they had on. Although it disgusted them to dress in the robes of heretics, it was a time were it couldn’t be helped as the only clothing that didn’t stick out for what they needed.

The Tempalrs all checked their gear and nodded. The smallest of them walked carrying a bag over his shoulder. Hiding in an alley, he looked around to make sure no one saw him and threw the bag up. Jumping up, he tried to pull himself up, but after failing, another came over and gave him the help he needed.

Atop the roof, he undid the bag and pulled out a bow and arrow. Lying down to not be seen. It was the perfect place for an ambush. Low roofing and many alleyways running along a busy street, packed with people and horses.

The Templars all took up places along the road, standing by nearby carts that were empty. They were a distant apart but close enough to make a carriage stuck feel suffocated. Luca looked up at the rising sun.’Soon.’Telling himself, he watched the city guard patrolling the road. Unlike the soldiers, they were much more friendly with the ordinary citizen, chatting with a few locals and paying little attention.

If something happened, they would be quick to react, but otherwise were happy to talk to the random fruit merchant at the side of the road. It made Luca smile at how relaxed they were. After a few minutes of watching, a couple of soldiers ran into the street and blew a whistle to call for them. A few looked at one another and gave knowing nods, and half ran off to assist their comrades elsewhere.

Luca looked back at the sun, shielding his eyes.’Five more.’With the distraction James said he would provide underway, the Templars all knew they were to act soon. Gripping the weapons under their cloaks, they held their breaths. Atop the roof, the Templar drew his arrow and calmly waited.

-------------------------------

Violet watched the children with a blank expression. Ever since Edward had been taken to learn under Horace, she had found herself bored on the journey to the academy. She would usually talk to Abu on her way over. Most of the time, it was work-related, but it allowed her to pass the time. Sighing, she leane on her cheek and looked out the window. Some people stopped to watch the carriage, and Violet quickly realised they were either foreign visitors who had never been this close to Royalty or were Ammary citizens who lived outside of Brookhaven and didn’t know the daily routine of the Lindonfall family.

Without realising, her eyes fell on the guard following alongside the carriage. The numerous guards that came with them had dwindled significantly. Partly it was because they had to split the protection detail between Edward and the twins, and partly due to Isra’s quiet ways to undermine the children.

Sighing again, Violet rolled her eyes at the whole family squabble. It was unbecoming for it to even happen, and it didn’t help that Isra subtly enforced it. Whilst she would never directly take action, she was practically begging the family’s enemies to target the twins to remove the threat to Edward.

The carriage came to a sudden stop. Violet slammed back, hitting her head against the headrest. Reaching out, she caught the two children before they fell forward and poked her head out to see what was happening. In the same moment she did, an arrow tore through the wind, piercing the side of an escort’s horse. A second quickly followed, and the horse that tried to remain calm flew into a panic and kicked into the air, throwing the rider off its back before running off, trampling anyone who got in its way.

All around, seven clergymen of the Pantheon drew their swords and surrounded the carriage. Violet didn’t hesitate. Ducking back into the carriage, she grabbed the two children. "Listen. Be still. Do not fight what I am about to do." Her voice was calm but commanding. Keeping her head low, she reached the carriage door opposite the archer. The melee broke out as arrows tore through the air.

Thud. Thud. Thud. Many missed their targets, hitting the carriage, piercing through its wooden doors. The twins froze in fear at the attack, the clashing of steel making Astrid cover her ears in pain. Balder looked around, his depressed mood swiftly turning into one of panic.

"Vio..."

"Shhh." Needing to focus, Violet didn’t dare provide comfort for Balder, whose voice shook. Peeking up, she looked out the window at the fighting that was happening. Although the clergymen were unarmoured, they were all incredibly skilful, able to make up for the disadvantage with speed.

Analysing the outside, she saw a clergyman fall screaming in pain, caught by a stray attack that pierced his stomach. It was the chance she had been waiting for. "You two. Come to my side. Keep your heads low." Unlocking the door, she waited. The children did as told and moved themselves. Violet firmly grabbed them, making sure they were comfortable to carry.

With her foot, she pulled the door handle down and pushed the carriage door. Watching again, she waited for a path to be clear, and when she saw it, she kicked the door open, jumping out.

"THEY’RE ESCAPING!" Luca’s voice echoed throughout the street as numerous clergymen refocused their attention. The archer above pulled his arrow, hearing the cry and took a deep breath, steadying his hand.

Violet charged into the nearby alley. She already had the path in her mind to head for the Metis house, knowing the attackers wouldn’t dare go near it.

------------

The archer saw Violet running and lifting the arrow, and stopped his hands from shaking. Tracing her run, he knew he had one chance; if he missed, the mission would be over unless his comrades could grab her. Clearing his mind, he released the arrow.

---------------

Violet charged, not caring about the children crying in her ear, or the stragglers who hadn’t fled when the fighting started. From behind, she heard the wind tearing and before she could realise what happened, felt the arrow pierce through the back of her shoulder.

"Ahh..." A pained yell left her lips, and the weight of the attack made her stumble. Her grip on Astrid loosened. She tried to get a firm hold again, but the arrow cut with each movement, loosening he hold even further. Her mind spun. Her mission was to protect them at the cost of her life. The woman, whom she called her sister, had done the same with Edward. She wanted to follow that order no matter what, but her arm refused to listen.

The hold on Astrid finally loosened enough, and through her fingers, she felt the young girl slip from her hand. Astrid crashed into the ground and cried out in pain, her shirek echoing through the air as her small body was covered in cuts and bruises. Violet turned to help her, but in the corner of her eye, she saw the archer on the rooftop drawing his arrow again.

Time came to a halt, and in a split second, she realised she couldn’t go back and save Astird without risking her own death and the failure of saving one child. It was her job to protect them with her life, but that didn’t mean she should throw it away. Even if she could get to Astrid, the blood rolling down her back posed the question of how she would even pick the Princess up.

"TAKE THE PRINCE!" The Royal Guard noticed Violet’s hesitation and creid out. Violet awoke from her daze, turned and sprinted.’One is better than neither.’All she could do was tell herself that to justify her failure.

"BALDER!" Astrid screamed for her brother, watching him vanish. Peeking from behind Violets arm he stared into his sisters eyes for a second before turning to face Violet. Opening his mouth, he stopped seeing the pain and intensity in his face as she desperately tried to escape.

Turning back to look at Astrid, her face had gone completely pale, seeing her brother not even say a word to Violet. Reaching his hand out, all Balder could do was grasp at the air, as the image in the road behind vanished with the turn of a corner.

------------------------

Luca knew he was running out of time, but with an eye watching the escape, he knew his chance had come. Instead of dodging the next attack, he caught it with his blade, giving him a chance to push the man away. Jumping back, he dropped his sword to let himself run faster and made a charge for Astrid.

His men all saw his plan and slowly backed up to provide cover for their captain. Four of them had already died, only able to take down a single escort, but they knew their mission wasn’t the death of their enemy, just the capture of the children. One had gotten away, but the girl was enough.

The dance they were in came to an end, and with the archer fire form above providing cover, Luca swooped up Astrid and made a charge for the escape. The young girl tried to fight back, clawing at his clothes and neck, but her small fingers couldn’t distract him, let alone allow her to break free.

"STOP! LET ME GO! LET GOOO!" Astrid desperately begged, the smell of blood and sweat on Luca making her sick. "MY DAD WON’T LET YOU!" Seeing her begs didn’t work; she used Alfred. Luca remained unfazed, already knowing Alfred would respond.

Charging across the street, he ran straight through, into another alley, making his way for the second road over. Pulling his sleeve through his coat, he stuffed Astrid underneath and covered her mouth. He looked strange with a large lump under his outfit, and many gave him strange looks, but Luca couldn’t be bothered to care, jumping into the nearby carriage that was waiting for him. Nathan sat in the driver’s seat with his hood up. As soon as his passenger boarded, he swung the reins and rode off.
",1758,"2026-06-03T11:17:51.400Z","2026-06-03T11:17:48.775Z",1,"novelbin.me","1b195cd1e9dbdcd33112ce70e1c355bcf9aea06b22cff413254373b13ebf103a","the-reborn-king-chapter-453","the-reborn-king-chapter-451",487,"https://novelzhen.com/images/covers/the-reborn-king-cover.jpg"]
