She tried to understand why he was staying away from her, ignoring her whenever she tried to speak to him about playing.’Is he still mad because of that?’Looking at Balder, the young boy stared ahead, paying attention to the lesson. Astrid opened her mouth to try to talk to him, but stopped, realising it wasn’t the time.

Half an hour passed, and when the lesson ended, they were given a small break between classes to relax a little. Before Balder could run off, Astrid reached out and grabbed his sleeve. "Balder." Quietly speaking, she saw his angry glare soften a little, "Why are you ignoring me?"

There was silence for a while, as Balder looked at her, trying to find a reason that she could understand. "You’re different." Balder said with an equally soft tone, not wishing for anyone to overhear, "You’re weird and annoying." Blader pulled his arm back and smiled, "You don’t care about me either. Always talking to Edward or Father before me."

"Bal.."

"I don’t care." Turning his back on her, he took a deep breath and walked off, ignoring his sister. Astrid stared, unable to understand what she was feeling. Before, it wasn’t his fault he had left her, but now he consciously did it. It was a betrayal she couldn’t understand. Sitting back down in her seat, she rested her head on the table, looking at her gloved right hand.

-------------------------------------------

The journey home was short for the two. Sitting by the window, Astrid sighed, gazing out. When she first started going to school again, she thought she would be terrified of being in the carriage once more, but after doing it the first time, seeing the large number of guards that had been given to them, she wasn’t worried.

With a deep breath, they slowly rode past the cathedral. "Stop," Astrid called the new caretaker to replace Violet until she got better. The butler banged on the wall, stopping the journey and waiting for the door to open. She stared ahead at the open doors. "I want to go here for a while."

"Sister, let us go home." Balder moaned, not seeing the point. He knew what the cathedral was, but had no love for the gods. Rolling her eyes, she stared at the butler riding with them.

"Let him go home, I want to go here." A group of Royal Guards surrounded the door, overhearing the conversation. Looking at one another, they wondered if they should indulge or force Astrid home. They knew it was safe to let Astrid into the Cathedral. It was one of the most heavily guarded places in the city. But it wasn’t their decision to make, but Alfred’s. Seeing none of them move, Astrid jumped out of the carriage and ran past, up the stairs.

Stepping through the wide double doors, the atmosphere changed. The air was warm compared to the cold breeze outside, the light soft, unlike the harsh sun and the angelic hymns soothing. Looking around in amazement, she didn’t notice the guards chasing after her, instead mesmerised by the building that painted the glory of the Gods.

Footsteps echoed ahead, stopping before Astrid. Looking up at Sister Alice’s soft smile, she froze in embarrassment at nearly tripping over the steps up to the altar. "Princess, have you come alone?" Alice asked with a teasing voice, knowing that Astrid wasn’t meant to be here without permission.

"Yes." Her cheeks erupted into a crimson mess as she turned away, knowing she was in trouble. Hearing Alice’s chuckle only made it worse. Looking at the guards, Alice smiled.

"Send word to his Majesty. I will look after the Princess during her stay." Holding her hand out, Alice carried on, "Come, Princess." Hesitating for a second, she took a final look around. Seeing the guards didn’t have a problem with it, she took the hand and allowed herself to be pulled into the connecting room.

"You seem worried, Princess." Alice carried on, bringing Astrid into the new addition to the Cathedral. Statues of all the Gods sat around, each one now completed.

Rolling her eyes, she looked at each statue of the Gods. Her eyes landed on the statue of Khors. The statue was unlike the others. All the others could be considered male or female, even when none had a face; only Khors couldn’t. He was the son, as evidenced by the Adam’s apple carved into his neck, but his body was thin, and his hair long. A veil covered the top of his face, only showing a thin smile on the bottom half that wouldn’t look out of place on a man or woman.

Astrid stared, lost in thought about her current situation. She didn’t spend a lot of time reading about the Gods, nor did she care much, but the atmosphere of the building and the oppressive feeling that came from the statues made her feel strange. "Balder hates me, and Edward doesn’t talk to me much anymore."

"I see." Alice crouched down to be at head height with Astrid. Wrapping her hand around Astrid’s shoulder, she forced her to look at the statue of Gaia, a woman covered in vines and fauna as clothing, staring down at the ground. Her body was covered in scars, and parts of her skin looked cracked. She had no facial features other than a pair of eyes, filled with tears. "Do you know the story called The Separation?"

With a shake of her head, Alice smiled and pointed at Gaia, "The family of the Gods hold the five: Sol, Khors, Gaia, Anahit, and Morana. Before humanity, they lived in harmony, their love binding them to one another, but chief amongst them all was the love for Gaia." Alice stared at the statue, her eyes becoming more fervent, "But the Gods wanted more, and so they created humanity. Using the perfect son as a mould, the first man and woman were created."

Alice sighed and stood back up, leading Astrid out of the room, back into the main cathedral. Leading her in silence, they stopped before a painting. It was a depiction of what could only be called the end of the world. The land was alaze as people desperately tried to pray for help or spend their last moments pillaging and destroying, believing themselves abandoned.

"The Gods were perfect, but strayed from one another with the creation of humanity. Sol and Gaia loved the creation, seeing their flaws as a form of beauty; Khors both loved and hated them. He loved the freedom they enjoyed, but hated how those created in his image could sin. Anahit and Morana hated them. They couldn’t believe such a warped creation could live on the surface of their beloved sister."

Alice paused and looked down at Astrid to make sure she was keeping up with her story, "They were happy to leave humanity be, however, until humanity used their names to justify atrocities that killed one another, destroyed their homes and ultimately scarred their sister’s skin."

"They called for the end of humanity. Only Sol and Gaia stayed loyal to their creation, even as it slowly killed her. When the three siblings acted anyway, killing humans off with diseases and plagues, ones that wouldn’t harm Gaia, her cries echoed in the cosmos and her tears, uncontrollable, nearly wiped out humanity, whom she loved dearly."

Alice paused and grabbed the symbol of the Pantheon around her neck. Astrid frowned, pausing to be intrigued by the story, but she held herself back from shouting what happened next. Taking a deep breath, Alice carried on, "The three siblings stopped their actions, seeing that Gaia was about to kill humanity, an act that would have broken her. In their rage at not being able to help Gaia and bitterness at how desperately she mourned all those who died, they separated themselves from Sol and Gaia."

Alice paused and looked down at Astrid, "But do they actually hate Gaia?"

Astrid sat silent and looked at the ceiling, imagining she could see the moons hanging high in the sky. "They still sit in the sky watching her."

"Yes. They love her and watch her, but they can’t agree with her or be near her when she allows herself to be destroyed." Patting her head, Alice saw more guards coming to force Astrid home, "Prince Balder doesn’t hate you, he hates how you are dealing with things and how others are treating you. He sees the love you get and wishes for it himself. He is jealous, but he will always be there for you. You were together before your birth. It’s a connection you can’t destroy, no matter how much you drift apart."

Astird smiled at the words as the guard closed in. "It’s time to go home, Princess." One of them said, picking her up so she couldn’t run off again.

"My doors will always be open, Princess." Alice smiled, waving at Astird as she was taken away.

-----------------------------

In the next week, uploads will be sporadic because I will be away and won’t know when I will be able to upload.
