Staring at Gabriel, he could already tell it would be a tough battle, one where he couldn’t afford to make a mistake. There was silence between the two for a second before Gabriel made his move, stepping up the steps. Tightening his grip on his weapons, and without turning back, he spoke, "Alfred. Do not get close. I cannot afford to lose-"

Clang

Crossing the short sword and axe over one another, he blocked the strike Gabriel threw and pushed him back. Gabriel stumbled down the staircase a little, and without missing a beat, he dove forward, swinging his axe from the side, for a swift kill. Gabriel ducked, the axe splitting the wind.

Kicking down at Gabriel after steadying himself, he pushed the Templar down the staircase before he could throw a surprise attack from below. His armour bounced on each step, and despite cutting himself on the wood, Gabriel paid it no attention, pushing off the pile of bodies he landed on and rotating his shoulders to soothe the pain.

Gabriel stared at Charles before looking at his own sword. Dropping it to the ground, he pulled the second, smaller one, sheathed on his side. Skillfully twirling the blade to quickly get accustomed to it, he climbed the staircase once more. A step apart, and Gabriel struck, stabbing forward. Using the axe to push the dagger to the side, Charles lifted the sword into the air and swung down, aiming to split his shoulder in half.

Gabriel watched everything, from Charles’ posture to the changes in his breath. Seeing him lift his sword up and take a deep breath, he knew in the split second that it wasn’t a bluff. Pulling his hand back, he threw himself to the side, avoiding the blow. The powerful strike lodged itself in the wooden floor, sending splinters flying.

Stepping hard on the sword to stop him from pulling it back, he hit Charles in the nose with the butt of the sword, making him stumble backwards. Charles stayed lucid, keeping his eyes on Gabriel, making sure not to miss a single moment, knowing his enemy only needed him distracted for a second. Gabriel moved, not allowing him to have a moment to recover. Pulling his hand back, he twirled the short sword and stabbed up the steps.

Releasing the sword, Charles fell backwards, tripping himself up on the step to move quicker. The sword dragged along his armour, cutting a shallow scar into it. With a deep breath, he kicked out to make space and pushed himself back, going up a step.

Gabriel didn’t fall, able to grab onto the railing with his free hand, but the move gave Charles a few seconds to breathe. Taking a few deep breaths himself, he watched. He didn’t have to win; all he had to do was get past Charles. His real target was behind him. Even if it meant a blade through his back, he would take the opportunity if it arose.

Charles tightened the hold on his axe and looked at the sword lying on the steps. Clicking his tongue, he held his ground as Gabriel rose once more. Watching his every move, Charles took another step back and leaned to the side. Gabriel’s sword pierced forward, into empty space.

The strike was quick, and the recovery was quicker. Charles moved to slam his gauntlet down onto the blade, missing by an inch. The opening was all Gabriel needed. Charging with his shoulder, he pushed Charles onto the bridge, making him fall onto his side. Charles rolled to the side, pushing himself up and quickly made space to cover Alfred before Gabriel could charge in.

Alfred watched. On his right side, the Unyielding were steadily gaining ground against the boarding party, but on the left, the Templars held firm, blocking the path so Gabriel couldn’t be surrounded. He could tell that they were risking everything so Gabreil would finish the mission. Parry stepped forward and looked at Charles before taking a peek at Gabriel.

"COMMANDER!" Taking his own sword out, he passed it to Charles, seeing Gabriel grab the one Charles had dropped. Charles didn’t deny it, seething the axe in his belt and holding the blade with two hands. Gabriel boarded the bridge, silently, staring at Alfred, Charles and Parry.

Parry pulled out a small dagger, and Alfred pulled his own sword. Stepping forward, Parry pushed Alfred behind him. Three vs one would be easier, but they couldn’t risk Alfred’s safety. They had just watched Charles be overpowered even when he was in an advantageous position.

Gabriel stepped forward, positioning his back to the sea. Parry and Charles split evenly, keeping Alfred behind them. The two didn’t need to say anything. They both knew Charles would be the one to fight him; Parry just had to provide support.

Watching Gabriel take a defensive stance, Charles moved first, throwing a weak attack from above. Gabriel easily blocked it, watching Parry approach next. Draggning his sword along the blade, the hilts on the swords interconnected and pulled Charles to the side, to block off Parry’s opening.

Charles pulled away, retaking his position, not giving Gabriel an opening to Alfred as he watched. Parry moved again, swinging multiple, quick and precise attacks. Each one was blocked or nimble avoided, very few making light cuts on Gabriel’s skin and armour. From the left, Charles charged in, swinging from the side.

Kicking Parry away, he swung up in an arch, grabbed the end of his blade, and pulled down to intercept the attack. Breathing heavily, he didn’t get a moment to rest as Charles reached for his belt. Pulling the axe, he pulled back and swung for Gabriel’s neck. Clicking his tongue, he pushed against Charles’ sword, putting him off balance and jumped backwards, hitting the railing of the boat.

Grinding his teeth, he watched the attack miss and focused on Parry. The sailor moved, able to move quickly in his light clothing. The attack flew forward, aiming for Gabriel’s chest. Unable to move back, all he could do was step forward. Lowering and tilting his body to the right, the dagger stabbed through his left arm, piercing through the chainmail, and cutting a chunk out of his left arm.

The vein popped on his neck and face, but gritting through the pain, he stabbed his sword through Parry’s stomach. Grabbing the side of his head, he twirled Parry around and pulled his sword out, kicking him into Charles. His agonised cries echoed from the ship, making everyone look up to see who the first to fall was.

Charles didn’t react. Catching Parry, he threw him back at Gabriel, stepping to the left to block Alfred off once more. Gabriel easily avoided the returning man and focused on Charles. Breathing heavily, he let go of the sword with his left hand and positioned himself so that only his right side was facing his enemy.

His left arm swung freely, blood pouring out of the chainmail. Catching his breath back for a second, Charles watched, easily seeing an opening. Dashing forward, he swung at Gabriel’s chest. Gabriel ducked, not daring to risk blocking the heavy attack with one hand. Charles stopped himself from falling forward and spun around, quickly lifting his sword to block Gabriel’s sudden attack.

The two were locked in place, their faces inches apart. With heavy breaths, they used the moment to catch their energy once more before breaking apart. Charles jumped back and retook his stance. Gabriel turned his right side to Charles once more and secretly clenched his left fist, sending agonising pain throughout his body. Not wishing to let Charles realise he had control of it still, he bit the inside of his cheek to suppress his cry and silently prayed to ease his mind.

’The arm can still be used.’Looking at Charles, he knew he would never be able to get to Alfred with him in the way.’I need to bait him with it.’It was risky and could easily fail, but he had no choice. Taking the initiative, he shuffled forward, pointing his sword up into the sky, towards Charles.’One chance.’

Charles struck, not giving Gabriel any longer to recover. His attack was swift, arching downwards. Gabriel sidestepped to the left, his sword swinging across his body. Lifting his sword back up, Charles blocked the attack as the two exchanged a few blows. The two drew blood, creating small cuts along each other’s bodies.

The fury of blows lasted a minute, with each man trying to outmanoeuvre the other. Avoiding another attack, Gabriel moved in an inconspicuous way to open his left side up. Watching Charles subtly change his stance, he could tell that he had seen the opening and was readying himself for the attack. Charles moved, pulling his arms back for a heavy strike on his left side.

Gabriel rushed forward, reaching out to grab Charles’s arm. Stopping the attack, he could feel his left arm buckling behind the weight of the strike. He creid out in agony, nearly forgetting to attack. Another wave of pain assaulted his mind, and through heavy breaths, he gritted his teeth and raised his sword as best as he could. Pulling back, he stabbed deep into Charles’ stomach, finally easing the weight of the attack on his left.

Charles cried out and kicked Gabriel away, falling to his knee, and clutching his wound. "SHIT!" Looking at Alfred, he saw the young Emperor clench his sword, ready to charge in. "STOP!" Looking at Gabriel, even though he was injured and in pain, he could tell he was waiting for Alfred to blindly charge in.

"Ahhhhh." Moaning Charles tried to rise, but fell forward, in pain worse than anything he had ever experienced. Gabriel rose as well and stumbled forward towards Alfred. Alfred watched and grit his teeth, moving forward, ignoring Charles’ warning.

Swinging down, Gabriel knew he couldn’t avoid, too tired to do so, and lifted his sword up to block. With his goal in sight, a wave of adrenaline filled his body, the pain became a thought in the back of his mind and with it he lifted his left hand once more. "sol..." Weakly speaking to himself, he grabbed his sword with his left hand and pushed Alfred away before his defence fell. ".....strength...." Unable to get the words out, he moved again.

Alfred parried the strike, knocking it away, kicking Gabriel back. Gabriel stumbled, desperately trying to keep himself on his feet, moving forward once again, using whatever energy he could find. He knew he couldn’t win normally, and loosened his grip on his sword.

Alfred attacked once more, his eyes staring at Gabriel hatefully. The blade flew from the side. Dropping the sword, Gabriel crouched down and lunged forward, the attack gliding over the back of his head, hitting the back of his helmet, knocking it off. Ignoring the pain, he reached for Alfred’s belt and pulled the dagger from it. Lifting it up, he stabbed down.

Alfred felt Gabriel take his dagger. Catching Gabriel’s hand, the blade was inches from his eyes, and staring at the cold steel, his face hardened as he desperately pushed back.

"your... fault... all.... it..." Struggling to get the words out and stab him, he forced his left arm to move, pushing down on the blade with both hands. Alfred held him off easily, as Gabriel’s hand shook.

Looking into Gabriel’s eyes, he smiled, "You really will kill a Blessed One." With a teasing voice, he saw Gabriel finally show a resemblance to emotion for him. His eyes radiated a hate-filled light as he forced his left hand up to push down on the knife.

"they..... shouldn’t....exist....evil...all....of...them..." Gabriel desperately tried to push the dagger deeper, but couldn’t outdo Alfred in his condition. It annoyed him beyond belief. If he were in condition and didn’t have to fight his way to him, it would have been easy. He could tell Alfred was skilled with the sword, but he wasn’t anywhere near his level.

Alfred’s smile slowly vanished, and, clenching Gabriel’s hands, he slowly twisted the dagger on him. Gabriel tried to fight back, but it was a pitiful struggle. Using his back, Alfred pushed Gabriel over and saddled him, pushing the dagger down, towards his throat.

The Templar could tell it was over, and looking up into the sky, he saw the two moons hanging over, watching the carnage of the battlefield with a gentle glow. "Sol....." The blade lowered closer to his throat, "Constance.... Forgi-"

With a powerful thrust, Alfred pushed the blade through his throat and threw himself backwards. Looking towards Charles, he scrambled towards him with shaking hands. "No, no, no, no, no." Clutching the wound, he heard Charles weakly laugh, his face drained of blood.

"It’s-" Choking on some blood caught in his throat, Charles spat it out and smiled as best as he could, trying to make the pain seem not as bad as it was, "I’ll be with my brother."

Reaching out, Alfred tightly clasped his hand. Drops fell onto Charles’ face as he laughed once again, seeing Alfred cry, "Thank..." His voice broke as he looked at Charles, "Thank you for your service, old friend."

"Long...live....the....emp..." His words trailed, the final bit of willpower he used to stay awake finally crumbling. Alfred closed his eyes and nodded, brushing his hands over Charles’ eyes to close them.
",2249,"2026-06-03T11:17:51.400Z","2026-06-03T11:17:48.775Z",1,"novelbin.me","584593907debecc8ad820387affb49be0a260f8dfbba46ae2ae7df64e00738ae","the-reborn-king-chapter-476","the-reborn-king-chapter-474",487,"https://novelzhen.com/images/covers/the-reborn-king-cover.jpg"]
