He had already had those close to him die before, and thought it would make it easier when it happened again, but it wasn’t. Clenching Charles’ hand, he looked up through the gaps of the guard rail and saw the Templars slowly being beaten by his men. Even if they were skilled, they were shaken by what had happened previously. Only someone like Gabriel could power through all he had seen using his faith alone.

Turning to face the sea, he saw what remained of his plan. The sailors desperately tried to swim away from the inferno on water whilst the Templars and Severian soldiers sank, their armour dragging them to the bottom of the Tears. With a final look at Charles, Alfred closed his eyes and took a deep breath.

Rubbing underneath them with his thumb, he stood up and brushed his armour, and although he tried to hide his sadness, it was painfully clear to all who saw him. Picking up Gabriel’s helmet, he walked to the steering wheel, overlooking the deck. "THE GRAND TEMPLAR IS DEAD!" Chuckling the helmet into the crowd, he spoke without a smile, doing his best not to let his voice break, "DEAD AT MY HANDS! SURRENDER AND I WILL SPARE YOUR LIVES!"

The Unyielding stopped moving, maintaining a defensive stance in case of a surprise attack. Many of the Templars looked up at Alfre before down at Gabriel’s helmet. They recognised it in an instant and realised their mission was over. With their backs to the sea, they had no escape. Gabriel was their hope for completing their mission, and if he had died, it would have meant none of them stood a chance.

"Praise Sol." One Templar lifted his sword after crying out, swinging down on an Unyielding soldier. His actions surprised all but the Unyielding, who aimed at, expecting an attack, blocked it, with the one at his side, stabbing through the Templar’s stomach.

"I will give you one more chance." Alfred leaned forward, taking a deep breath, "Five seconds, who will surrender?" Lifting his hand, he slowly lowered his fingers for the Templar’s. Each one stared at the others, with a few lowering their weapons. Clenching his fist, Alfred sighed, "Kill all those who didn’t make a choice." Ignoring the clashing of steel behind him, he stepped back and looked at Parry’s body.

A pool of blood had formed underneath him, but on his waist, the telescope. Taking it off his body, he looked at the ships around. The Templar fleet had even broken off, running after the explosion or throwing themselves at his fleet in a final, desperate bid to win. The battles were split; those ships closest to him that were boarded were winning, but those furthest away were stuck in a fierce stalemate. Alfred looked down at the deck once more. Templar bodies piled up as the Unyielding finished up the last of them. Those who surrendered were quickly tied up and secured.

"Who can take Captain Parry’s place?" Calling out to the crew, the few sailors who survived looked at one another. One came forward and lowered his head.

"I can, Your Majesty."

"Good, circle us around. We must help our comrades deal with their own boardings." The sailor nodded and ran up the steps, quickly shouting orders to the rest of the personnel aboard. Walking to the back of the bridge, Alfred sat down and leaned his head against the railing. Looking up at the moons, he stared silently. Their gentle light brought a small smile to his lips as he closed his eyes, drowning out the sound of the battles raging around him.

----------------------

Octavius looked around the town he had just fought in. Servain soldiers carefully moved Ammary’s bodies to a pit, lighting the corpses on fire, clearing the village as the townspeople who remained behind stayed inside, peeking through their curtains, terrified to come outside.

"It was light resistance." Ramiel walked by his side, taking his helmet off, his soft voice carried by the wind.

"This was light." Looking at the Severian and Templar soldiers who were carried off, he bitterly chuckled, "What makes you say that? They fought till the bitter end."

Ramiel sat silent, watching as the corpses were stripped of weaponry, armour and clothing. "I spoke to Michael before he left the Church. He led the Templar forces who assisted the Commonwealth before its fall, and the way he described the Ammary style of fighting was eerily similar."

Octavius raised his eyebrow, taking his helmet off as well, "In what way?"

"Use soldiers like they are numbers, not people. Sure, the Ammary men fought well, but they fought knowing they would die here. The man in charge, Marcus, is devious. He will spend thousands of lives to ensure his plans work. Stories tend to be overblown, but the graveyard the Ammarys have for their fallen soldiers is real. The Valley of Swords." Ramiel bitterly smiled, "Stories can be fake, but graves don’t lie."

"He is buying time?" Octavius said, looking around. Pausing, he scoffed, "No, he’s drawing us in."

"Whatever he is doing will cost many lives. We only faced a few hundred here. As we get deeper, it will get tougher."

"Our job isn’t to march to Brookhaven. That’s the fleet’s job. We are a distraction. We don’t have to play to his tune." Octavius smiled and looked at the distant fields outside the town, "He expects us to march onto Chent. What if we don’t?"

"Our supply lines will be stretched thin, and with how the Lisaponics have been acting, we can’t risk getting close to their borders," Ramiel countered, but Octavius shook his head.

"Marszalek’s land. They are a major weapons manufacturer, and taking the city would give us a direct line to Torun. If we march along the Tears and bypass Chent, we can make a stronghold in their land. With the Tears to our back, we can make up for our supply line being cut off for any reason." Octavius boldly said and looked at Ramiel. He thought for a second and nodded.

"It could work. But it’s dangerous if we take too long." Ramiel sighed and looked around, "And to not arouse suspicions, we would need to sell the idea that we are marching on Chent."

"Yeah." Octavius grimly said and looked around, "Send a few thousand men to Chent. Make it appear as if an advanced battalion is clearing a staging ground for the city." Ramiel stayed silent, rubbing his eyes for a second.

"Do it. I’ll provide the troops."

"No." Octavius instantly answered, "This is my command, my men. They will die doing this, and I do not wish for this to be your burden, my friend." Octavius smiled and patted Ramiel on the shoulder, "Relay my order to the Templars of the change of plans. If we wish to distract, our goal must be the Archduchy. Take Ada Sobieski and hold the north."

Ramiel nodded and left without a word. Looking into the open fields of Chent once more, Octavius followed behind, wondering who he could trust to follow his order without complaint.

-------------------------------------

The final ship on the Tears fell. Alfred looked around the last deck he had cleared of Templar troops with hollow eyes, flicking his sword to clear it of blood. Seething, he looked around at those who had come with him. Men stripped the bodies of valuables and equipment before chucking the corpses into the ocean.

The Uneyilding loaded their fallen comrades into the lower levels of the ship, leaving their bodies untouched and not allowing anyone who wasn’t one of them near. "Your Majesty." A captain approached Alfred. "What are your orders?"

Looking at him, Alfred smiled, "Return to Nakhal and rearm." Turning to face the ship he had started on, he saw Unyielding soldiers move to the bridge and lift Charles’ body. Walking back to it, he held his hand out to be helped back aboard, "We will reinforce ourselves and sail for the Gotic lands." Taking a deep breath, he paused. His finger twitched, looking at Charles’ corpse being taken below, "And when we arrive, we will burn them out of their homes, and make everyone realise how foolish it is to invade my Empire." Stepping up onto his ship, Alfred looked back at the random captain, "Is my order clear?"

The captain gulped and lowered his head, resting his hand on his chest, "Your words are clear, Your Majesty."

"Good. Recover all the cannons before we leave. I will sail back first." Alfred looked up at the bridge where Parry’s replacement waited. With a nod, the man smiled and looked at the crew.

"PREPARE TO SAIL! WE RETURN HOME AND REARM!"
",1474,"2026-06-03T11:17:51.400Z","2026-06-03T11:17:48.775Z",1,"novelbin.me","22c7fbc0cc09350b9a65de03a03d77d1a1208d4b387d08a6a7cfb21d328dad23","the-reborn-king-chapter-477","the-reborn-king-chapter-475",487,"https://novelzhen.com/images/covers/the-reborn-king-cover.jpg"]
