The entire return had been a celebration between the sailors, drinking, singing and dancing all the way home. Alfred smiled, remembering the game they played, trying to be one of the first to get the Unyielding to crack. Alfred couldn’t admit it, but he watched the whole thing, greatly interested to see if it was possible. Remembering how one of his elite guards turned their head to hide the smile they wore was a sight he would have never expected.

Stepping down, the people of Nakhala could already tell from the mood of the returning patriots how the war had concluded and were spreading the word. Yet Alfred spotted a select group that stuck out. All of them wore black, with the women veiled. Alfred knew already it was the families of those who had controlled The Martyr and slowly made his way over to them.

"Whatever they do. If it doesn’t threaten my life, don’t intervene." Alfred quietly whispered to his guards before stopping in front of the families. Each one looked at him differently. Some were angry, whilst others were accepting of what he had done. From the group, an elderly woman crept forward, assisted by a young man. Her walking stick came to a stop before him, and looking up, Alfred saw eyes that were deeply sad.

"I greet the Emperor." Lowering her head, she spoke with a quiet, raspy voice.

"Do not lower your head." Alfred paused and took a deep breath. "What can I do for you all?"

"SCRE...." One of the younger men behind the old woman called out, but was silenced by the old lady’s hard glare at him.

"I just want to know what happened to my husband. These people wish to know as well what happened to their brothers, husbands and fathers." Alfred took a deep breath and nodded.

"They won the war. They gave their life to stop our enemies from invading our lands. They knew they wouldn’t survive, not even leaving a body behind, but they did it anyway." Alfred smoothly said, "I can’t tell you more, because there is nothing more to say."

"So I won’t get his body back." The old lady said with a shaking voice.

"Forgive me. But it is impossible." Alfred quietly said, lifting his arm to pat her shoulder, but stopping himself, not knowing if it was the right thing she needed.

"Thank you, Your Majesty." The old lady lowered her head again and slowly walked off with the help of her son. Looking at the rest of the people, Alfred smiled.

"I don’t know who these men were to each of you, but I do have their names and their families. I can’t return the dead, I can’t reverse my order. All I can do is give you money like I promised these men. In the future, members of the Golden Bank will be in touch and reward you. Do not move house for the time being, or you will not receive anything." Alfred smacked his lips at the awkward smile. Bowing his head slightly, he walked off, unable to take it any longer.

-------------------------------

Alfred looked at his palace with a thin smile. He had taken his time returning home, allowing Marcus time to return. After two weeks of travelling, he finally returned and let himself back inside his house. Waiting for him at the door, only Sebastian stood, bowing his head elegantly.

"Where is my wife, Sebastian?"

"The Empress is resting. She was not expecting you to return yet." Sebastian cooly said, and getting a nod, Alfred walked off to his room. The servants in the halls moved to the side, bowing their heads. When walking past them, Alfred could hear them whispering to one another. Some spoke of his deeds with passion, others couldn’t believe what he had done, and a few silently begged that his return meant Sebastian would ease up on his standards.

Hearing the chattering in the halls, he smiled and stood before his bedroom door. Ignoring his saluting guards, he let himself in and saw Isra lying in bed, reading a book. The frown she wore at someone barging in quickly changed into a wide smile. Jumping out of bed, she leapt towards Alfred, hugging him; Alfred happily returned it, pulling her in tightly.

"I didn’t know you would be back yet," Isra said affectionately, kissing his lips.

"I got word Marcus was a week away and decided it was time to return." Running his hand through her hair, he pushed it behind her ear, "How have you been?"

"Bored but busy." Isra leaned into his chest and took a deep breath. "I heard about Charles."

"Did you see the body?" With a nod in reply, he carried on, "When the inner circle arrives, we will have the funeral. All I know is the Unyielding are first doing their own ceremony for him, one that Charles requested himself."

"What was it?" Isra asked, looking up into his eyes.

"I don’t know. He said it wasn’t for me or anyone who wasn’t a part of the Unyielding to know. I can force my way in, but I’ll respect his wishes." Isra nodded and pulled Alfred to the bed. Lying down, she waited for him to get comfy before getting closer to him, wrapping herself around him like a sloth on a branch.

"Let us just relax for a while. I want to hear everything." Alfred smiled at her words and looked at the ceiling.

"I met Constance again..."

---------------------------------

The bells rang throughout Brookhaven as the cathedral was surrounded by Unyielding soldiers. Inside, the dark lighting hid the few people at Charles’ funeral. Only the inner circle and a few close friends of Charles were allowed in, everyone knowing the man didn’t want a large public spectacle.

Alfred moved over to the coffin and saw the open casket, his body having been preserved as best as it could. The slight smell that came from it was covered with perfumes and herbs as his body was covered in wax.

William came to his side and smiled, "He wouldn’t like even this much, you know?"

"I know, but he was one of us. This is what is expected." Aflred rested his hand on the edge of the casket and looked above it. The family banner of the Raven family, a raven holding a branch covered in white flowers. "Really. How were you the last to survive?"

William chuckled, shaking his head, "I don’t know myself. An old man like me should have been the first to leave."

"Old man, my ass." Alfred crudely said, "You would still dance around most men on the battlefield." William laughed a little louder, sighing afterwards. From behind, Issac walked over and stood next to Alfred.

"I know it’s not the time, but the matter with his lands can’t be delayed much longer. Have you thought about it at all?"

"I’ve seen your candidates, but I don’t trust them." Looking behind him, he saw the people sitting. Watching Isra talk to Catherine, he smiled, "Give it to Isra. Let her control it."

"So the crown will take over?"

"No, she will. She will have her own title alongside her title as Empress consort." Alfred weakly said, "I’m sorry for making you do all that work, but I can’t let an outsider have that much power. I would have given it to Abu, but he would refuse."

"The nobles won’t like it."

"They will do what I want," Alfred said coldly. Taking a deep breath, he fixed his attitude, "Just do it. No more work now. I want to mourn him."

"Of course." Issac bowed and walked back to his seat. Alfred and William sat in silence, watching over their fallen friend. Behind them, everyone watched, knowing it wasn’t their place to go over until the two had finished.

---------------------

Constance sat at the head of the Holy Seat council and looked around the large room. The war with Lisa had started, but his role in its preparations was over. "Today I have an announcement." The council straightened up, scared at what he might say. "In this war against Ammar, we lost great men, but we lost one in particular." Constance lowered his head, clenching his fist in secret.

"I, with the authority bestowed upon me by Sol, decree that the Grand Templar Gabriel is no more. As he lived his life, he died in the service of something greater than himself. He was a man whose faith should be honoured and copied. None of us, no matter how hard we try, will ever be able to mimic his devotion. And so the history will not know him as Grand Templar but as Saint Gabriel. His statue will be erected along the other saints, and he will be honoured as they have been."

Constance ignored the conversations that broke out in the council room and looked up into the sky, clutching his necklace. "I know he gave up his chance to be in your Kingdom, but please have mercy on his soul and welcome him into your arms." Quietly praying, he stared at where the sun would be, his grip on the necklace threatening to snap it.
",1558,"2026-06-03T11:17:51.400Z","2026-06-03T11:17:48.775Z",1,"novelbin.me","8d10a0a797c1ad909c6c0d00e86c1fe062203405aec12d00d11fb84d8543997f","the-reborn-king-chapter-486","the-reborn-king-chapter-484",487,"https://novelzhen.com/images/covers/the-reborn-king-cover.jpg"]
