The wooden tower erupted into flames as the men threw the burning cauldrons onto it. The cheering saw morale rise as the Kingdom’s forces became more energetic in defending the gate. Slowly they regained the ground they had lost. Looking over to the middle gate he wondered how his father was fareing. He didn’t care that he had placed him in the section facing the least threat, he knew it was simply for his own safety. He also knew it was a good time to learn how to lead.

Refocusing, he looked through the gap of the shield wall, he saw a new wave of Safrid men coming to support the gate now the wall had been lost. It was more than his forces would be able to handle and a split decision was made. In quick succession, Issac blew the whistle twice.

The men who planned to move stopped instantly. Issac stabbed his sword forward and began his countdown again. Those defending the wall quickly scaled down. Some stayed behind to deal with any ladders that tried to climb, providing support from above. They had been trained in many weapons, and although it wasn’t like the Unyielding who were taught every weapon, they knew enough. Pulling a sling from their back, they reached into side bags and loaded lead balls into them. However, large stones were ready when the lead balls ran out.

Alfred had told William about his idea for slings and at first it was brushed off, but after training men to use them expertly and seeing the damage they could inflict, it became a mandatory weapon for all soldiers, being easy to carry and cheap to produce and upkeep. Although the training took longer than a bow to make it efficient, it paid off with how effective it could be.

Issac watched as those on the walls began to use their slings, hurling projectiles at the attacking forces back. Some died from it, but the majority were only hurt. It was enough of a distraction, however. The attention from attacking the enemy in front now had to slip with defending against the attack from above.

Issac blew his whistle, falling back to the back of the line. He let out a deep breath. "FIND OUT THE SITUATION AT THE OTHER GATES! THEN RETURN!" Issac gave the command to a runner who was ready. The man nodded, leaving quickly as Issac counted down. He took a quick sip from his flask washing his mouth and spitting it out. His reinforcement arrived, and although they didn’t join the defence formation to make sure they didn’t mess it up, they stayed close enough to provide support when it was about to be overwhelmed.

Three minutes passed and the runner returned. "THE FAR LEFT GATE HASN’T BEEN BREACHED! THE WALL IS CLOSE TO FALLINGHOWEVER! THE MIDDLE GATE WAS BREACHED BUT IT WAS DEFENDED, ALONG WITH THE WALL! NO RETREAT WILL BE CALLED YET!" The runner shouted his finding in between heavy breaths as he took a step back, catching his breath. Issac nodded, returning his focus. With time to calm himself and relax a little, he thought about his old self. He would have been quick to jump into the fray to prove himself. He had to give it to his father. He took his role as general seriously and created a new way to fight. Although it focused heavily on teamwork, it was effective.

He could see the Safrid soldiers getting tired, whereas when they started to feel fatigued they were cycled to the back and given a short break. With the countdown done, he blew the whistle again, moving forward one place. His body now became a weight behind the Safrid push that was making progress by the inches. "NEW BODY!" A shout came from the front as the body of a Kingdom soldier was dragged down the line. Issac pushed it to the back taking a step forward. His rest was going to be shorter.

On the left wall, Marcus Hardly, the supreme commander in charge of the defence of the left wall, and William’s Second in Command, was struggling. The forces attacking the wall were overwhelming with the failure to open the gate by the Safrid’s and although he wanted to pull the men off it, he knew that if it did open then he had sentenced all his men to death on the wall allowing its encirclement.

He blew his whistle taking to the front. Stabbing his sword forward, it was bloodied as it pierced through the skull of Safrid soldiers. Despite this, the man’s place was quickly taken. The horde seemed endless as he felt his foot slip back. The one holding the shield in front of him collapsed as a Safrid lance pierced through the crumbling shield. Marcus clicked his teeth and took his place. "NEW SHIELD!" He sent the call down the line, as it was passed back. He had to wait.

Marcus watched his enemy. It felt like he had a view of the whole battlefield, being able to see every move made by the enemy in front of him. He refused to give an inch unless necessary. Every vein in his body popped as he fought to keep his men behind him safe. Despite this, he felt himself being forced to step back over and over. He knew the wall was lost.

With the whistle in his mouth, he blew four times in quick succession. Runners behind understood the order, quickly rushing to the other sections of the defence. Those defending the gate, slowly retreat under the command of their own individual commanders, ready to begin the second phase of the defence. Marcus and his men waited. He held for a minute, then two, then three. His body had been covered in blood, grime and wounds, yet he refused to budge until the fateful four whistles from behind sang.

He and his men slowly retreat. They closed up the defence, shields being placed on top of those in front creating a turtle. Weapons stabbed through the tight gaps created, holding the enemy at bay that charged at them. It hurt Marcus’s pride that he was the first to fall, but he knew that he made the best call.

William began his retreat as well. Although it wasn’t as hard as Marcus’s it wasn’t trouble-free. He looked at the city. His men had already created shield walls in the various choke points they had planned to hold. Spears were ready as small gaps opened to let those retreating through. The men at the gate were the unluckiest, having to be the last to fall back. Archer fire rained down on them and although shots were returned, it at most was an effective annoyance, hardly killing any of them.

William slipped through the shield wall with his men. The man in charge of defending the gate called for the retreat back. The men, a few hundred strong created a tight formation, slowly stepping back. They were organised stabbing in sync with one another to keep the Safrid attack at bay. The shield wall ever so slightly opened up letting their comrades through before shutting close to face the new enemy. The new melee that broke out was as violent as the one that had taken place on the wall but had the added effect of constant archer fire from both sides.

William watched everything take place. He saw his calvery finally come into the gate, smaller than before but not by much. It still tormented the Safrid soldiers but with less room within the city walls, they couldn’t stick around for long skirmishes only doing hit and runs. Despite this, the sight of bodies being knocked to the ground and the attention of hundreds of men having to be refocused was a good sight. He knew Nasr had lost most of his calvery during the Civil War and wasn’t too afraid of it appearing. As long he still lived they would be forced to deal with it instead.

Nasr made his way through the left gate. It had been opened for the rest of the army and he wasn’t willing to put himself in harm’s way by attacking the other two. The bodies of his men littered the floor. Their limbs were cut off, wounds everywhere and blood flowing like a river across the street. The smell of iron was heavy and Nasr knew he would see similar sights and smells all across the wall. The majority were Safrid men, but he knew it was a hard-fought victory for the front gate from the amount of enemy bodies.

He wasn’t as angry as he thought he would be. He assumed it was due to William’s reputation. If it was easy then he would be disappointed that he was so scared of the man. He pushed the thought out of his head. Charging with his men he attacked the chokepoint being held by the Kingdom soldiers. He finally saw it. The organised mechanism known as the Ammary Military. They moved as one and acted as one. It was a sight to behold and showed how outclassed the Safrid army was.

He had heard of the reorganisation that took place when he worked on his father’s council, but didn’t understand the full extend, the information being kept suppressed whilst he still reigned. After a while, he forgot to look into it until the Kingdom invaded. By then he was already out of the capital. It was so amazing that Nasr felt overwhelming respect for William, heading the change.

Issac was less happy. He knew the retreat was going to happen, but he never expected it so soon. He knew his father’s wall had held, so he assumed Marcus was the one who had to call it. He knew the man must have been suffering heavily to call it and could only follow along. His men had an easier time. Those on the wall, quickly rushed back, behind the choke point, whilst he and the others who held the gate could rapidly fall back and reorganise themselves. The pressure from the waves of Safrid Soldiers was heavy, but not having to deal with arrow fire from the walls, made the job easier.

Behind his line, Issac looked back. Behind him, the small reserve force waited; prepared for the next retreat. There were only two thousand all around, maybe less. The archers also began to hang up their bows. Although less skilled in the sword they knew their role, joining the defence. They knew what to do and the plan slowly took place. The majority of the Kingdom’s soldiers were on these choke points, and it had spread the Safrid’s thin. With no opportunity to flank, they had to throw themselves at the wall.

Slowly and sneakily, the middle loosened, opening ever so slightly. All around the city many charges believed they had created a gap and tried to charge in, not realising it was the jaws of a predator.
",1852,"2026-06-03T11:17:48.774Z","2026-06-03T11:17:51.400Z",1,"novelbin.me","22965e383e6016627b539c324f2f88ae154fed247b3773cf8fb96d4cfb8784d7","the-reborn-king-chapter-93","the-reborn-king-chapter-91",487,"https://novelzhen.com/images/covers/the-reborn-king-cover.jpg"]
