Chapter 108: Having been caught in the rain herself, she wants to hold an umbrella for others

~7 min read 1,300 words

These children aren't troublemakers; they need strict education. Life has already worn down their edges. They know what they need, they know their own way, and how to walk it.

I will take them to the Wang Fu, I will teach them calligraphy, let them choose what they like. Jiang Yunchu looked at the twelve little ones, her eyes light, the corners of her mouth slightly raised; her words sounded as if she were speaking to herself, not to others.

How she once wished to meet a good family.

Having been caught in the rain herself, she wants to hold an umbrella for others.

Even if they……

Don't understand!

Wang Han fell silent, seeing her gaze, his heart shaken—this……

Is this really Jiang Yunchu?

The eldest daughter of General Jiang, the granddaughter of the Kang Clan, the Princess Consort of the Regent Prince's Manor.

Now, nothing compares to a name—a vivid, living soul.

Jiang Yunchu!

"Good, if they agree, Princess Consort, take them with you." Wang Han spoke, and by then his head had already turned away.

When Jiang Yunchu looked back, she did not see his expression.

Night fell, the resting place here was limited; Jiang Yunchu was arranged to stay in Wang Han's house, while Wang Han went to squeeze in with other farmers.

This place is far from Ning Jing; there's no village ahead, no shop behind.

The people of the Wang Fu rarely come—once every few years; each year they just need to deliver grain and accounts on time, and the Wang Fu never inquires further.

On the manor, there is simply no place for the master to rest temporarily.

Jiang Yunchu's stomach ached, her face devoid of color; if Su Xin or Bai Zhi were with her it would be better, but unfortunately this time she is the only woman, making everything inconvenient.

Lying on the wooden board bed, covered with her own cloak, the little fellow had changed into his own clothes, and Elder Two returned the cloak to her.

Just lift her head, and she could see the starry sky outside.

Tonight the stars were bright, moonlight spread over the land, laying a silvery sheen on houses, treetops, fields, and so on.

On a far‑away big tree, Wang Han held a wine pot, gazing far off, watching that silhouette—she sat up, looked outside, then leaned back and sat down.

Only her hand seemed to be constantly pressed against her stomach.

Today her complexion looks bad; earlier I thought it was fatigue from travel, she being a pampered Eldest Miss unused to such hardship, but now it seems she might be unwell.

Wang Han jumped down from the treetop and went to the dwelling of the twelve children.

"Uncle Wang, why are you here? Do you have something to do?"

The place where these twelve kids live is twenty meters from his hut; here there is an open field where, during the autumn harvest, grain can be dried. A few of the kids, fearing loss of their belongings, had him build a small wooden shed here; the children moved out of his house and all now live in the shed.

"Elder Two, heat some rice soup and send it to the Princess Consort." Wang Han gave this instruction.

Then he thought, "I'll send it again when I return."

In the deep night, ignoring the doubtful looks of the children behind him, he went straight to the rear hill.

After a full two quarters of an hour, he came back holding a wild rabbit—not large, but now it was dark; even with moonlight, his sight was limited, and he couldn't see far.

"Elder One, skin the rabbit, then stew it into soup and send it to the Princess Consort."

Just as Wang Han was about to leave the wooden hut, he remembered something, turned back and said, "Remember, say you hunted the rabbit, and don't mention me."

Elder One didn't quite understand, but still nodded.

"Uncle Wang, I understand."

Only then did Wang Han nod, then he leapt onto a crooked‑necked tree, gazing at the star‑filled sky, the corners of his mouth twitching upward as he wondered what pleasant thought had come to mind.

Over there.

Jiang Yunchu was in an unfamiliar place, unaccustomed; the bed was somewhat hard, Yue Yue was not beside her, her lower abdomen ached with waves of pain, she tossed and turned, still unable to sleep.

"Princess Consort, are you asleep?" Elder Two knocked softly on the door, afraid to disturb her rest.

Jiang Yunchu heard the voice and sat up.

"Is that you, Elder Two?" she asked.

Someone watches her doorway; if it were a stranger or someone threatening her, the guard in the shadows would naturally not let them in.

"It's me." Elder Two hurriedly replied.

Jiang Yunchu got to her feet, opened the door, and saw the little girl holding… a pot?

"It's so late at night—why aren't you sleeping?"

Jiang Yunchu asked doubtfully; opposite, the little maid smiled, her earlier wariness already gone.

"Princess Consort, this is rabbit stew; although the rabbit isn't fatty, there's hardly any other oil in the manor." Elder Two said with a chuckle.

Since the pot was a little hot, she placed her hand behind her back and rubbed it.

Jiang Yunchu touched the pot, her brows furrowed, then she reached out and pulled Elder Two's hand away.

She spread the girl's small hand before her own eyes.

"So hot, won't you pad something underneath?" Jiang Yunchu put on a stern face and then gave a mild admonition.

Elder Two smiled; it had been years since anyone had reprimanded him.

And it was such warm words.

"I was afraid the pot would fall." Elder Two chuckled.

"Elder One said we must drink it while hot." Elder Two recalled Wang Han's instruction; although she couldn't mention Wang Han, the soup still needed to be drunk hot.

She fetched a wooden bowl and chopsticks, but while ladling the soup, smelling the meat aroma, she swallowed a few mouthfuls of saliva.

Seeing her, Jiang Yunchu said, "You haven't drunk it, have you?"

Elder Two smiled: "Princess Consort, we're not hungry; this is specially prepared for you to drink."

Jiang Yunchu saw her blossoming smile and said softly, "Wait a moment."

Afterward, from the bundle beside the bed she took a bottle of medicine, applied it to Elder Two's hand, and asked, "Does it still hurt?"

Old Two stared wide-eyed; the hand that had just been burning with pain, the Princess Consort applied a little medicine, now it feels cool and refreshing, not painful at all.

Not painful at all.

On the little guy's face, it seemed as if he had seen something miraculous.

Jiang Yunchu drank a bowl of soup, feeling warmth spread over her body; even her stomach, which had just been sinking, now had a hint of warmth.

Her stomach hurt, not from illness but from physiological pain.

In her previous life, even though her medical skills had reached a certain level, she still couldn't cure her own menstrual pain.

Now this broken body is still the same.

"I can't eat any more." Jiang Yunchu laughed.

Old Two looked; the Princess Consort had only drunk a bowl of soup, yet she hadn't eaten any meat—who could refuse meat and not eat it?

"The youngest has been poisoned; today we let out a lot of blood, he needs to replenish his body."

"You all need to replenish as well, otherwise how will you protect your younger siblings later?"

"Take this pot of soup back; the twelve of you will share it."

Although it's not much, for the twelve of them each would get only two or three sips, but...

Saliva isn't due to hunger; it's an unconscious secretion, and children can't control it.
