Chapter 218: We can trust others
Kang Zi Wei walked up to Jia Chuan, checked Kang Nai Xin's injuries, her body stained with blood, but…
Kang Zi Wei looked up at Jia Chuan and said, "I need to check Nai Xin's wound; could you keep watch on the side?"
Men and women must keep their distance.
"All right." Jia Chuan turned his back, staying alert to any movement around them.
At this moment, he couldn't let down everyone's trust.
Kang Zi Wei lifted Kang Nai Xin's clothing, saw the bleeding spots; although the area was bruised, it wasn't serious.
Most of those bleeding spots on her were from where the vines had scraped her skin earlier, now oozing blood.
Against her fair skin, that bloody red was strikingly conspicuous.
Kang Zi Wei covered the clothing, then lifted her sister into her arms; as she held her, she slightly furrowed her brow, the pain in her palms leaving her somewhat at a loss.
The vines were covered in fine little thorns; while weaving the net she inevitably hurt her hands, yet some vines had other effects—some caused itching, some numbed the nerves.
Kang Zi Wei only felt that holding her sister might end up injuring her.
She squatted again, pulling Kang Nai Xin into her embrace, then glanced at the battle over there.
"Nai Xin's injury isn't serious."
She shouted loudly, and her words finally brought back a measure of reason to those over there.
"The net!" Kang Zhiqiu called out urgently.
The few who had been facing the beast head‑on also gradually regained their senses, then continued to fight while pulling back.
With Kang Zhi Xia's arrival and the threat of weapons, the wild boar instinctively grew a little more subdued, and its body was already covered in wounds.
"Quick, pull the net!" Kang Zhiqiu shouted.
Everyone gripped the vine used to haul the net, watching the wild boar continually struggle inside.
They all silently let out a breath of relief.
Finally…
"How's Nai Xin?" Ning Hanmo hurried over, the others close behind.
Ning Hanmo felt a twinge of guilt—if he had paid more attention to the boar, if he had lured it a bit longer, perhaps Nai Xin wouldn't have been hurt.
"She's fine; she's probably just exhausted."
Her body is covered in bruises, which can't be fully diagnosed now, but there's no bleeding—this is already the best outcome.
"I'll carry Kang Wu; his foot is injured." Kang Wen looked at Kang Nai Xin, saw she was alright, stood up, and glanced at the people around.
"All right, two of you take turns carrying Kang Wu; the rest of us will prepare food—we definitely need to eat, but making a fire is hard." Ning Hanmo frowned; that snake they'd been carrying was meant to add to the meal, but where could they find a fire here?
"The Dean once said… we could make fire by drilling wood." Jia Chuan suddenly spoke; after he finished, seeing everyone's puzzled looks, he asked uncertainly, "What's wrong? Did I say something wrong?"
"Second brother, you didn't get it wrong!" Ning Hanmo patted his shoulder, recalling that he'd thought their mother was joking—how could drilling wood produce fire?
Even now, he hadn't recalled that.
He hadn't expected Jia Chuan to remember.
"Zhi Xia, you stay here on guard; I and little six Kang Wen will go carry the person." Ning Hanmo said.
Kang Zhi Xia glanced at the injured group, then nodded, "Take this knife with you; we're more numerous here, so if anything happens we'll come to you."
Ning Hanmo shook his head, "You have more people, but also more wounded—you need it even more."
"Let's go." He waved his hand, and Ning Qiancheng, Kang Wen, and the three of them set off together.
Meanwhile, Jia Chuan and Han Wen Jun began drilling wood, while Kang Zhiqiu and Kang Zhi Chun collapsed flat on the ground; they had only just recovered, their hearts still pounding "thump‑thump‑thump."
"I'll gather some firewood—are you still able to move?" Kang Zhi Xia asked anxiously, looking at Zhiqiu and Zhi Chun.
Kang Zhi Chun sighed, then rose from the ground, "I can."
Zhiqiu only felt her legs weak, "Let me rest a bit longer."
It wasn't that she didn't want to stand; it was that her legs seemed to have a mind of their own.
"Then rest."
"Sister, look at clearing a patch of ground for the fire later—this is deep in the mountains."
"The Dean said that when lighting a fire in the mountains, you must be especially careful not to start a wildfire, otherwise nobody will make it out alive."
Jiang Yun Chu used to teach them a lot of wilderness survival knowledge in class, bit by bit sinking into their minds, so that when they found themselves in such a setting they could recall what she had once said.
"All right, I'll take care of it." Kang Zhi Chun nodded.
For a moment, everyone on this side sprang into action.
Meanwhile, Kang Wen, leading two others, as they walked over saw Kang Wu slowly making his way toward them.
"Didn't I tell you to wait for me where you were?" Kang Wen frowned.
But Kang Wu clung tightly to his shirt, asking, "Is someone hurt? Who is it?"
He had just heard the cries and could no longer stay seated.
If it weren't a hair's breadth from disaster, the companions wouldn't have cried out like that.
"Nai Xin was flung into the air by the boar." Kang Wen's voice was soft—he felt he'd failed to protect his fourth sister.
"How bad is the injury?" Kang Wu grew more anxious.
"Third sister examined her; the injury isn't serious, she's mostly just exhausted and frightened, and has now fainted."
"How's your foot?" Ning Hanmo quickly explained, then looked at the foot he kept lifting, his brow slightly furrowed, though he said nothing else.
All along the way they'd experienced so much, as if life and death alternated each second.
"I'm fine; I just twisted my ankle. I'll be okay once we get down the mountain and straighten it out—no need to worry about me."
Seeing the worried looks on a few people, Kang Wu quickly shook his head and slung his arm over Ning Hanmo's shoulder, "Just help me walk a bit; after that fight we're all a little drained."
"What are you talking about? Come on, even if we're further drained I can still carry you." Kang Wen glared at him, then crouched down.
"Just now Elder Ning has been fighting nonstop; he's exhausted, his hands trembling. You've held out the longest, your strength is most depleted—I'll take over." Ning Qiancheng crouched down.
"I can." Kang Wu looked at the two people squatting in front of him, then patted their shoulders.
They have already experienced battle, yet they are still willing to squat in front of me; this feeling, I didn't understand before, now I only feel my eyes sore.
From now on...
He will trust others, will trust his companions.
"You cannot."
"Your foot is a big deal; you must be careful. Acting tough like this, how can we feel at ease?" Ning Hanmo looked at him, then shook his head.
"I'll carry half, Kang Wen will carry half, Ning Eldest Brother will stand guard." Ning Qiancheng directly spoke.
The young boy directly made his decision.
