Chapter 240
Lu Mian sat at the entrance of the alley across from the MP's office, mingling with a group of homeless people.
Through tracking and observation, he had roughly figured out the whole thing:
Someone in the MP's office had found a trusted police officer in advance, telling him to pay attention to cases of death in the jurisdiction due to strange diseases, suppress similar matters, not report them to the corresponding official Beyonders, and take away the evidence found, sending it to the MP's office.
This also showed that the unhealthy young man who spat phlegm into the handkerchief and discarded it knew very well what consequences his actions would lead to. Otherwise, if he hadn't mentioned this matter, the person in the MP's office would never have gone to the police headquarters to ask for help!
Lu Mian stared at the earthy-yellow four-story building, his hands clenched into fists at some point, but in the end, he didn't take any extreme actions.
After a long while, he exhaled slowly.
At this moment, he saw a somewhat familiar figure walk out of the main entrance of the building where the MP's office was located.
The man wore a silk top hat, held a dark walking stick, was dressed in a crisp black formal suit, had a thick brown beard around his mouth and chin, and had slight wrinkles around his deep blue, almost black eyes.
He was Benoît Goodwill, the owner of the Goodwill Chemical Factory. Last night, he left the celebration banquet earlier than the Savard Party boss, Gardner Martin, and his photo occasionally appeared in the news of certain newspapers.
Lu Mian withdrew his gaze and waited for another while until the Chief Inspector walked out of the MP's office alone and returned to the police headquarters. Only then did he get up and leave the alley entrance where many homeless people were lying, found a random cafe, and had a simple, late breakfast.
Near 11 o'clock, he knocked on Forsyth's door again.
"How is it? Did the official Beyonders take over?" Forsyth was already up, having changed into her favorite white ladies' shirt and light-colored breeches.
Lu Mian shook his head:
"No."
As he walked into the apartment, he explained further:
"It was suppressed by a Chief Inspector at the police headquarters."
"Those people in the MP's office also know that spitting everywhere will cause problems!" Forsyth understood what was going on as soon as she heard it and couldn't help but sneer.
Lu Mian found a seat in the sofa area and recounted everything from the police coming to investigate the scene to the Chief Inspector walking into the MP's office.
Forsyth looked into his eyes and pondered for a few seconds:
"I know you're not reconciled, and I know you might be harboring a bit of anger inside. Actually, I can understand. Although that couple had nothing to do with you, you did try hard to save them, only to meet with failure, and most people can feel sympathy for such tragic encounters.
"But I still have to tell you: patience, patience, and more patience. You cannot be impulsive, and you cannot take extreme measures to retaliate yourself. Those are people around an MP. If something really goes wrong, the matter will blow up, and it's not something you or I can bear."
Seeing that Lu Mian didn't refute her and didn't show any other emotions, Forsyth breathed a sigh of relief inwardly and said:
"I'll say it again: leaving this matter to the official Beyonders to investigate is the best choice. I will let them know about this case through my channels later and point out the identity and characteristics of the suspect.
"Although by this time, the important physical evidence should have been lost, and the corpses have probably been sent for cremation through a fast-track process, as long as the official Beyonders know that there is extraordinary ability outside the normal channels in the jurisdiction and set their sights on the person I divined, they will sooner or later discover his problem."
Hearing this, Lu Mian nodded slowly:
"Let's do that."
Forsyth felt relieved and thought:
"I will hide the specific details and only say that a strange disease causing full-body festering has appeared in the Market District, suspected to have come from a handkerchief wrapped with thick phlegm by a staff member in the MP's office, and that similar matters have been suppressed by the police headquarters.
"If I don't do this, the official Beyonders might suspect that the source of the information is you and conduct a detailed investigation on you."
Lu Mian said "Hmm," indicating that this was no problem.
After saying goodbye to Forsyth, leaving White Coat Street, and walking toward the Breeze Dance Hall, he ran into Jenna.
"Yo, isn't this Cherie?" Lu Mian greeted her.
This "flamboyant girl" was now wearing a very simple gray-blue long dress, her brown-yellow hair half-pinned up and half-hanging down naturally. There was no makeup on her face, making her look very clear and beautiful, no longer having that decadent allure.
Hearing Charles call her real name, Jenna gritted her teeth and said:
"You'd better call me Jenna!"
Lu Mian looked her up and down:
"Were you beaten by your mother with a broom? Preparing to quit the underground singer circle?"
"Fuck! You just hope nothing good happens to me, right?" Jenna spat. "My mother is such a gentle and reasonable person, how could she hit me with a broom?"
Having said this, her expression showed a bit of pride:
"At first, she opposed me singing in the dance hall, thinking it was both dangerous and likely to lead to my corruption. But after I told her how much I could earn every week now and that I didn't have to sleep with any men, she wasn't so determined anymore. She said that after work today, she would come to the Breeze Dance Hall to watch my performance. Fuck, what should I do?"
"If your mother sees you wearing a low-cut dress, deliberately lifting your legs high, and singing 'He's very good with his fingers,' what will her reaction be?" Lu Mian asked deliberately.
"She'll come straight onto the stage and beat me to death!" Jenna rubbed her brown-yellow hair.
She thought for a moment and said:
"It's not like I have to wear those overly revealing dresses. Didn't I try wearing a small evening gown to sing last time? The response wasn't bad. Hmm, it's been a while, I can try again. The rest is the problem of picking songs. I'll discuss it with Forsyth; she has great taste and even composes music and writes lyrics herself, but they are all quite strange..."
Lu Mian smiled and said:
"If it really doesn't work, I can have René hold a themed night event.
"The theme of the Breeze Dance Hall tonight will be 'Love'."
This can be paired with some less vulgar love songs.
"Good idea!" Jenna's eyes lit up.
She looked at Lu Mian and thanked him somewhat awkwardly:
"Your brain is quite flexible, uh, fuck, thank you!"
Not waiting for Lu Mian to respond, Jenna instinctively looked left and right and lowered her voice:
"I also told my mother that I'm good friends with the 'Red Boots' of the Savard Party and have received her protection, which is why I'm singing at the Breeze Dance Hall and have been well protected. I went to find you that day to ask for a raise in my singing fee. Because of Forsyth, you agreed.
"If my mother comes to ask you, just answer like that."
Lu Mian nodded and mocked:
"This is called colluding."
"This is called a white lie." Jenna responded happily, "At least I have to wait until I sing for another year, save enough tuition, and pay off my debts."
Lu Mian looked at this performance apprentice and asked thoughtfully:
"Have you considered finding a way to get the accident compensation you deserve?"
"How do I get it?" Jenna opened her eyes wide, looking puzzled, "The court hasn't made a final verdict yet."
Lu Mian smiled:
"Why wait for the court? Paying debts is an act protected by the 'Commercial Guardian'; we can go ask for it ourselves."
"That factory owner didn't say he wouldn't pay; he keeps appealing only because he has objections to the division of responsibility and the amount of compensation..." Jenna looked at Lu Mian suspiciously, "You want to force him to compensate us? That's illegal!"
"Illegal?" Lu Mian looked amused, "As a gang leader, I break the law every day. Didn't you want to assassinate Margot to avenge your friend before? At that time, why didn't you think it was illegal?"
Jenna's words stalled, and she muttered:
"Margot is a gang leader, and he has done many bad things, every one of which is enough to send him to the gallows."
"So you want to punish him on behalf of the law?" Lu Mian laughed, "That factory owner might have done many bad things too. We cover our faces, sneak into his house, tie him up, and force him to compensate everyone, or just make him hand over the money directly, and you can split it privately to avoid being suspected in subsequent investigations."
Jenna showed a difficult expression:
"I'll think about it, I'll think about it."
Charles is worthy of being a gang leader; he talks about illegal and criminal matters as easily as eating meat and drinking wine.
Lu Mian didn't persuade her further. Since Jenna wasn't in a hurry, there was no need for him to be in a hurry for her.
…………
Near evening, Lu Mian sat in the cafe on the second floor of the Breeze Dance Hall, waiting for another night to come.
He had nothing to do for the time being, just waiting for Forsyth or the boss to help him find the auxiliary materials for the "Pyromaniac" potion to officially impact Sequence 7.
"Boss, what do you want to eat tonight?" Louis saw the sky darkening and leaned over to ask Lu Mian.
Lu Mian was about to answer when he saw Jenna walk up.
This "flamboyant girl" had already changed into the rose-colored long dress from before, the hem supported by a hoop skirt, like a drooping flower.
Her brown-yellow long hair was simply pinned into a bun, with most of it hanging down very smoothly. The makeup on her face was very light, mainly to highlight her original skin and clear features. A black mole was stuck in the middle of her right cheek, and she held a folding fan with exquisite patterns in her hand.
This left Louis and Sarcota stunned, unable to believe this was "little bitch" Jenna.
Jenna asked Lu Mian somewhat nervously:
"Is this okay?"
"It's quite good." Lu Mian didn't discourage Jenna again.
Just then, a loud boom came from afar, the earth shook noticeably, and the cafe's glass windows rattled.
"Fuck, what happened?" Jenna looked out the window in astonishment.
Lu Mian stood up, reached the window, and looked outside, finding all the pedestrians puzzled and a bit panicked.
He looked into the distance and found that conspicuous black smoke seemed to be rising in the south.
"Go find out what happened." Lu Mian instructed Louis.
After Louis went downstairs, Jenna leaned next to Lu Mian and saw that it was the southern part of the Market District emitting black smoke, becoming nervous and worried, very restless.
After a while, Louis returned to the cafe and reported to Lu Mian:
"Boss, it's an explosion at the Goodwill Chemical Factory."
With a slap, Lu Mian turned his head and saw the fan in Jenna's hand fall to the ground.
Jenna seemed to lose her soul instantly and mumbled:
"My mother, my mother is there..."
