Chapter 756: Two Spirits (Double Period—Requesting Monthly Votes)

~9 min read 1,605 words

Upon seeing the female figure emerge from the darkness, Angoulême and the others tensed their spirits sharply.

They still did not know how to make a humanoid containment object walk to the bed on its own, and could only hope the bed, itself a "Class 1" containment object, would exert its innate pull to draw other beings onto it.

Of course, the Church of the Eternal Sun could not possibly send only a Class 5 "Purifier" team to handle a transaction involving a "Class 1" containment object—there must surely be a demigod watching covertly—but if an accident truly occurred, faced with the dual assault of two "Class 1" containment objects, how many of them the senior officer could save remained unknown.

The woman, calm yet tinged with sorrow, appeared and immediately moved toward the exquisite classical bed, as if summoned or ordered to do so.

Angoulême and the others remained utterly still, as if turned into humanoid statues.

They feared their own movements might awaken the target and disrupt the trend toward a favorable outcome.

At last, the humanoid containment object, clad in a black nun's habit, lay down upon the bed.

She opened her mouth and let out a small yawn, then closed her eyes, radiating profound exhaustion from within to without.

It was the exhaustion of having drained her entire life's energy.

She fell asleep.

Several "Purifiers" stepped forward in turn and placed their colored leather suitcases on the ground.

Then, they pulled the red flannel cover over the humanoid containment object and the classical bed, concealing both beneath it.

The iron-gray steam-powered robot likewise set down the other suitcase it carried.

They lifted the bed and, following the Purifier team members, withdrew slowly and steadily from the quarry cavity.

Soon, only Angoulême and the nine leather suitcases behind him remained.

At the edge of the quarry cavity, within the thick darkness, Francine's assassin-clad figure emerged.

She did not speak to Angoulême; she passed the Purifier officer and walked to the suitcases, opening each one to inspect its contents.

Eight of the suitcases were either filled with gleaming gold bars or packed with vast quantities of gold coins, all heavy enough to make Francine's gaze feel disturbed, her pupils drowned in pure gold.

I've never seen this much gold in two lifetimes… too bad it's not mine… Francine felt a pang of regret and disappointment as she placed the 1. million Fiel gold, suitcases and all, into the Traveler's Satchel.

The other suitcase contained the primary and auxiliary ingredients for the "Pleasure" potion and two folded documents.

After confirming everything was correct, Francine nodded to Angoulême and spoke in the cold, detached tone of mere collaborators:

"You've kept your promise. I will continue providing you with intelligence."

"Praise the Sun—you are the God of Covenants!" Angoulême opened his arms slightly, attributing all glory and credit to the deity.

Francine immediately left the quarry cavity, circling repeatedly and using her "Witch" abilities to erase all traces, countering any possible divination or prophecy.

Seven or eight minutes later, she met Lu Mi in a hidden tunnel beneath Triel and was transported away via "Teleport."

…………

Apartment 702, No. 9 Aoluosaijie.

As Francine handed the "Pleasure" potion materials and the suitcase to Jianna, Lu Mi sat on the single sofa, reading the reorganized containment object dossier—unformatted and not following standard structure.

"Designation: 1—147

"Original name: Clémence Atana.

"This containment object was born into the family of a land judge in Spam Village, Zamut District, Upper Honachis Province. Upon adulthood, she was sent to the Zamut Female Convent; two years later, she entered Suhit University to study paleobiology, graduated, remained on faculty, and received a teaching position.

"In paleobiology, she focused on seeking traces of legendary creatures to prove their existence. At age twenty-nine, she abruptly resigned, returned to her hometown, and locked herself in her room for an extended period.

"Over the next two years, her family suffered a series of tragedies:

"Her father drowned after falling into a cesspit while drunk; her mother, overcome with grief, went mad and hanged herself; her brother murdered his sibling in a dispute over inheritance; her sister vanished while returning home to intervene and was never seen again…

"The villagers of Spam believed she had brought misfortune and sought to expel her. Soon after, a strange spiritual plague erupted in the village. By the time the 'Purifiers' noticed the problem, it was beyond salvation—they could only purify all the infected…

"Subsequent research concluded that Clémence Atana's body contained two spirits, her soul stitched together.

"It is likely one spirit orchestrated the family's massacre and the village's infection, while the other, unable to accept it, became dazed, fought instinctively, and eventually went mad…

"She bore another contamination, distinct from her mind- and spirit-manipulating powers.

"The origin of this contamination remains undetermined—whether it occurred before her return home or after her parents' deaths…

"Containment achieved two years and four months ago."

"Just sealed not long ago—its designation must be among the latest in all 'Class 1' containment objects," Francine said, having appeared behind Lu Mi without his notice, elbows resting on the sofa back, having finished reading the entire dossier.

Lu Mi fell silent for a moment, then smiled faintly and murmured:

"Perhaps one day, this will be my fate."

He could faintly sense Clémence Atana's struggle and resistance, yet she ultimately failed, becoming a monster.

Francine opened her mouth, unsure what to say.

After a few seconds, she patted Lu Mi's shoulder and said:

"Think positively—in the long run, we all die. What matters is what we do along the path toward death."

Lu Mi folded the dossier, nodded gently, and said solemnly:

"Until death!"

…………

At 10 p. ., inside the ancient, decaying palace of the "Kingdom of Night."

Members of the "Fuzzy Baboon Research Society" materialized one by one in various locations.

Francine immediately spotted "007" wearing the lion mask; she pulled her hood lower and moved closer, curiously asking:

"We received our reward—what did you get?"

"007" Angoulême replied with complex emotions:

"I may now command a 'Class 1' containment object with relatively minor negative effects."

"Whoa—pre-demigod status!" Francine exclaimed enviously.

She immediately thought of Lu Mi—he too possessed a "Class 1" containment object with minor negative effects, making him a pre-demigod as well.

Yet before Lu Mi embarked on the "Path of the God," "007" had already been a Class 5 adept; he simply had too much work and didn't want to become vice-chair of the "Fuzzy Baboon Research Society," so he never told anyone.

Thinking of this, "007" wasn't so enviable after all.

"007" glanced at Francine and said:

"I once dreamed of ascending to Class 4, becoming a demigod. But as I've handled more and more supernatural incidents, I've begun to think it's not necessarily a good thing. Alas, fate has already pushed me here—I must keep moving forward."

"Yes," Francine said, deeply empathetic. "I have something very important to announce."

"What is it?" "007" couldn't help blurting out.

What important news could "Dagger" possibly have now?

What could it be this time?

So far, every piece of news she brought had been crazier and more shocking than the last!

"You'll find out soon," Francine sighed.

She then turned her gaze to "Muggle" Lu Mi, clad in a wizard's robe and black hood, walking toward the "Academy" group's gathering spot.

Lu Mi, now in Aurora's form, gave Francine a slight nod.

Seeing most members of the "Fuzzy Baboon Research Society" had arrived, Francine walked straight to the massive stone chair.

Nearby stood "Gandalf," dressed in a simple white robe, towering like a half-giant; he asked quietly:

"Are you going to warn everyone about the 'Mirror Man'?"

"No," Francine glanced at "Hela" standing on the other side, then conjured a simple speaking horn from ice.

"Ladies and gentlemen, I have an announcement," Francine's voice echoed through the ancient, decaying palace.

Members of the "Fuzzy Baboon Research Society"—"Isotope," "Bear," "Three-Headed Hound," and others—turned their gazes toward the palace's depths, recognizing the speaker.

A sudden unease gripped them.

"Dagger"'s past announcements were never good news!

Though they had helped purge internal saboteurs, establish more reliable protocols, and prevent foreseeable harm, the overwhelming tide had left every survivor with lingering dread.

Seeing all conversation cease and every eye fixed on her, Francine cleared her throat and began with rumors of Revival Island, continuing until she described encountering a man with an Eastern face from her original world deep within Triel's underground catacombs.

So it's about that… it has a follow-up? "007" relaxed slightly.

A low hum spread through the ancient palace as members of the "Fuzzy Baboon Research Society" began whispering among themselves.

For most of them, reality had long been accepted; they had adapted to their current lives, even developed new pursuits—yet now someone told them "crossing over" might still hold secrets, perhaps even a way home!

Then Francine revealed that Harrison, a resident of Revival Island, was entangled with death and darkness, searching for certain things across the Northern and Southern Continents—but she omitted "Devil Wizard" Boulman, as it would too easily connect to the great adventurer Louis Berry.

In the sudden silence of the palace, Francine voiced her and Lu Mi's conclusion:

"Revival Island may be a nexus where the two worlds intersect.

"We must find Harrison and extract information about Revival Island from him!"

Having finished speaking, Francine's gaze shifted slowly from the stunned faces of the crowd to "Hela" nearby.

She noticed a flicker of indescribable emotion within the dark pupils behind "Hela"'s black lace veil.
