Chapter 914: Tracking
Lu Mi stared at the gray, dull shards of the mirror on the ground and, after sensing with his spirituality for several seconds, said:
“It’s the Messenger’s corpse that’s gone wrong, but I don’t know why.”
Franca asked uncertainly:
“Now that the mirror is broken, has the Messenger’s corpse fallen into the depths of the Mirror World, lost in its chaotic currents?”
Every mirror corresponds to a mirror-realm behind it; these realms are connected by illusory, dim tunnels, forming together the Mirror World.
Once a mirror shatters, its corresponding mirror-realm immediately collapses; any object placed there that fails to escape swiftly via the spiderweb-like tunnels will be swallowed by the Mirror World’s chaotic currents, dragged into its depths—where the environment and hidden dangers are lethal to non-divine beings without a complete mythic form.
—When a mirror breaks, it essentially becomes many smaller mirrors, but mystically speaking, as a whole it has been destroyed, its original symbolism and function entirely lost; the new shards require time to evolve their own mirror-realms and connect to the vast Mirror World, becoming mirrors with full mystical definition.
That means, for a period, these shards cannot be used to reflect enemies, transmit curses, or traverse the Mirror World—but this does not hinder the “Soul Wraiths” from using them to perform mirror-jumps.
Of course, Lu Mi destroyed the mirror with “Fire of Destruction”; the shards, in mystical terms, were utterly annihilated and cannot evolve mirror-realms, preventing any possible enemy from locating or locking onto Lu Mi and the others’ exact positions.
Lu Mi considered and said:
“The Messenger’s corpse has indeed been carried away by the spatial currents of the Mirror World. Even an Angel would struggle to penetrate deep into the Mirror World to find and retrieve it—unless it’s an Angel of the ‘Door’ Path like ‘The Magician’ Lady, or a ‘Witch’ Angel with deep mastery over the Mirror World.”
“But that doesn’t mean the Messenger’s corpse will drift forever in the Mirror World’s depths until torn apart and erased by its dangers. There’s a chance it will one day be ejected from the Mirror World, emerging from some random mirror.”
“Mr. ‘The Fool’s’ dream world is primarily this city—if the Messenger’s corpse emerges from a mirror, can we find it and determine what went wrong?” Jian Na understood what Lu Mi meant.
Lu Mi smiled:
“Yes.”
“Let’s wait patiently until our spiritual intuition gives us a sign.”
The Messenger Daniz’s corpse was hidden by him and maintained a tight mystical connection.
Franca nodded, pulled out her phone, scrolled through trending topics, sometimes laughing aloud and sharing the joy with Lu Mi, Jian Na, and Anthony, sometimes discussing whether a particular news item carried symbolic meaning or related to Mr. ‘The Fool’s’ current state.
When Ludwig finished his sixth bowl of noodles and was also scrolling through his phone, occasionally smiling, Lu Mi lifted his head and said gravely:
“The Messenger’s corpse has likely exited the Mirror World.”
“Then quickly use ‘Magic Mirror Divination’ to confirm its exact location,” Franca said, pulling out a mirror.
Lu Mi shook his head and chuckled softly:
“No need for such trouble.”
He turned his gaze toward Ludwig.
Ludwig shoved his right hand into his mouth, fished around, and vomited up a small clump of charred yellow hair.
“Using the Messenger’s hair with follicles allows direct location determination,” Lu Mi explained.
“When did you sneak some hair from the corpse into Ludwig’s stomach?” Franca asked in shock.
Lu Mi smiled and replied:
“Last night before bed, while Anthony was on watch.”
“The Messenger died so suddenly and strangely—I had to prepare for his corpse reanimating. Hiding some of his hair inside Ludwig’s body creates a counter-divination, counter-prophecy shield.”
Saying this, Lu Mi picked up the slightly damp clump of charred yellow hair and stood up:
“Let’s go.”
Almost simultaneously, he burned part of the hair and smeared the ash onto the surface of a mirror.
As the ash seeped in, the mirror shimmered with dark, watery light, revealing a scene:
Walls stained with grease, a vast space, a floor littered with dust and rat droppings, a large, filthy glass window—and the Messenger Daniz’s corpse lay on the ground before the glass.
“Looks like an abandoned factory—the machines have been removed…” Franca glanced and said.
“In the suburbs, less than ten kilometers from us,” Lu Mi added more details.
“Teleport there?” Jian Na asked.
Lu Mi could use “Mirror Travel” to directly reach another mirror within ten kilometers that he had locked onto—he now had the glass window that ejected the Messenger’s corpse locked; even without prior positioning, he could sense all mirrors within five hundred meters and leap between them.
Besides, his “Teleport” still worked, but was limited: natural positioning only within one kilometer; beyond that, he needed to have visited the location or possessed correct positioning, with a maximum range reaching the edge of the dream world.
Lu Mi nodded slightly, gestured for his teammates to grab hold of him, and stepped with them into the mirror Franca had placed on the table.
Through a dim, illusory tunnel, they suddenly plunged into the depths of the Mirror World—toward the locked glass window.
Amidst Anthony’s dizziness, the five figures simultaneously appeared on the filthy glass of the abandoned factory.
Lu Mi did not pause; he quickly sensed other mirrors within five hundred meters and leaped to them.
They appeared on the rooftop of the office building beside the factory, away from the glass window acting as the mirror, each hiding themselves and gazing toward the target.
From this angle, they could clearly see the Messenger Daniz’s corpse.
“Don’t bite it—just hold it,” Lu Mi handed Ludwig a lollipop to keep him quiet.
Franca and Jian Na were carefully examining the Messenger’s corpse; it showed no signs of decay from being hidden in the Mirror World, but its pallid face, frozen terrified eyes, and other details confirmed it had been dead for over ten hours.
“Nothing unusual…” Franca muttered silently.
Lu Mi stood motionless, patiently observing.
After nearly five minutes, the corpse’s fingers suddenly twitched in their line of sight.
Fuck, brilliant—is it coming back to life? Franca, startled, instinctively “admired” it inwardly.
The Messenger Daniz’s corpse first moved its fingers, then raised its arm.
Finally, it slowly stood up, expression blank, its deep blue eyes devoid of any emotion.
Really reanimated? Jian Na’s arms broke out in goosebumps.
The revived Daniz corpse walked toward the exit of the abandoned factory, at a steady pace.
It passed through the empty factory grounds and stopped dully by the roadside.
Soon, an empty green taxi passed by; the corpse raised its right arm and signaled.
When the taxi stopped before it, it slowly opened the door and sat in the back seat.
Franca rubbed her cheeks with both hands:
“Feels even more horrifying than the real world…”
“Is the ‘Death’ Path manipulating the corpse?”
Lu Mi did not immediately follow the taxi, because the mirror infused with Daniz’s hair ash still displayed the corpse’s current state.
Franca and Jian Na attempted “Magic Mirror Divination” to determine how the Messenger’s corpse had revived.
“No luck—all the known, relatively safe entities didn’t respond. None of them exist in Mr. ‘The Fool’s’ dream!” Franca realized she could only perform the basic version—asking her own spirituality.
Jian Na confirmed her finding:
“Yes, my ‘Magic Mirror Divination’ also failed.”
Lu Mi thought for a moment and said:
“In Mr. ‘The Fool’s’ dream world, the targets of ‘Magic Mirror Divination’—besides one’s own spirituality—should only be true gods who can directly project into it, but only if the corresponding projection exists at the moment of divination and the invoked title is perfectly correct.”
“Asking other local spirit-world entities might be equivalent to asking Mr. ‘The Fool’ or that Celestial Lord—it might yield the best insight, or get you instantly ejected from the dream. Hmm, we don’t even know the correct descriptions of those entities.”
“Who’d dare ask a true god…” Franca whispered.
Lu Mi suddenly laughed:
“There’s still another option—the most accurate one. The Major Arcana cards mentioned it: it’s a magic mirror belonging to Mr. ‘The Fool.’”
“We’re not at that point yet…” Franca resisted strongly.
Lu Mi grunted, his gaze fixed on the mirror showing the Messenger’s corpse.
Over twenty minutes later, the taxi stopped outside a hospital with lush greenery and highly designed architecture.
Lu Mi and the others immediately recognized the hospital’s sign:
“Mushu Hospital.”
“Mushu Hospital… Is the Messenger’s death connected to the ‘Tree of Desire’?” Franca murmured in confusion.
Lu Mi did not answer her. He watched as the revived corpse of Daniz pulled out a phone with multiple missed calls from its pocket, scanned a code to pay the fare, and slowly walked toward Mushu Hospital’s outpatient building.
The moment the corpse passed through the entrance, Lu Mi’s mirror rippled with water-like waves, darkened, then returned to normal—no longer showing the Messenger’s current location.
“I want to teleport near Mushu Hospital and follow to see where the Messenger’s corpse goes,” Lu Mi said, withdrawing his gaze.
Franca muttered under her breath:
“Shouldn’t a corpse go to the morgue?”
Jian Na said to Lu Mi:
“You’d better change your appearance before entering. Inside Mushu Hospital, you’re more likely to be exposed—you can’t risk compromising your current identity. Hmm, ‘Lies’ alone might not be enough.”
Lu Mi paused briefly, then wasted no more time:
“Alright.”
As he spoke, his black hair began to lengthen.
