Chapter 934: Dream Tendency (Thanks to Old Koller

~9 min read 1,705 words

Upon hearing Lu Mi’s words, Fu Lan Ka and the others involuntarily tensed their muscles and skin, as if they had already seen the arrival of a horrific event.

Lu Mi pulled over a chair and sat down, his gaze naturally sweeping every corner of the room as he said with a smile:

“I wonder what it feels like to be kicked out of the dream—the Major Arcana cards never explained it in detail.”

“Is it like leaping out of the deep sea onto the surface, or being kicked into a spiral tunnel with no end…”

He fantasized about how he might be kicked out of the dream, his tone light, as if describing what he had for breakfast.

Fu Lan Ka suddenly felt a pang of reflection:

“Do all you ‘Hunters’ behave like this? When facing danger, you’re not afraid—you actually joke about it?”

“Of course I’m afraid,” Lu Mi laughed, “but what good does pure fear do? No matter how terrified I am inside, I’ll always act like it’s nothing, and I’ll never show weakness with my words.”

Fu Lan Ka laughed.

“No wonder some say the hardest part of a ‘Hunter’ is their mouth.”

Lu Mi and Jianna both turned to look at Fu Lan Ka, saying nothing.

“...” Fu Lan Ka froze.

I didn’t mean to tell a vulgar joke!

She quickly added:

“In the Dream Metropolis, this is called ‘one who bears thunder within but faces like a still lake may be appointed General!’”

Thanks to Lu Mi’s antics, the team’s tension eased.

At that moment, Lu Mi smiled again:

“Being kicked out of the dream isn’t terrifying—there’s always another chance. What’s terrifying is if the Celestial Lord restricts us and sends his subordinates to kill us within the dream—then we lose everything.”

Jianna pondered and asked:

“So you mean, if we encounter something truly dangerous, we should exit the dream early ourselves?”

“Smart.” Lu Mi leaned back in his chair, pulled out his phone, slid his finger across the screen twice, then stopped, motionless for a long while.

Fu Lan Ka glanced and saw the screen displayed a WeChat friend-add interface.

“You want to use your alt account to add ‘The Fool’’s QQ and WeChat?” she understood at once.

Lu Mi gave a self-deprecating smile:

“Yeah, but I can’t find a good reason—I’d get rejected instantly.”

“Should I use ‘Do you want to know the truth of the world, the secrets of supernatural power?’ as my application message?”

“‘The Fool’—Mr. Zhou Mingrui’s current state: as an ordinary man who just drank the ‘Assassin’s’ elixir, he’s felt the allure of supernatural power but lacks knowledge of esotericism and desperately needs guidance like this.”

Anthony, who had also sat down, shook his head:

“If Zhou Mingrui himself, through certain clues, discovers you can teach him true esoteric knowledge—only at a monetary cost—he might add you. But if you actively and enthusiastically try to guide him, it will have the opposite effect.”

“Exactly,” Fu Lan Ka nodded firmly. “He’ll blacklist you immediately, maybe even call the police: ‘Officer, there’s someone here promoting feudal superstition—looks like a cult.’”

Lu Mi fell into deep thought, muttering to himself:

“Create a mysterious-themed video account, build a reputation, and wait for Zhou Mingrui to find me on his own?”

"But that risks exposing me to the Celestial Lord’s gaze—too much fame traps me, too little won’t reach 'The Fool.' Unless... targeted push?" [100] Fu Lan Ka recounted their ordeal, then asked with concern:

Fu Lan Ka’s lips twitched:

This kid is adapting to the Dream Metropolis and online society faster than I imagined!

She spread her hands:

“I don’t have that kind of skill.”

Lu Mi continued brainstorming:

“Maybe we could create small esoteric incidents among ‘The Fool’s’ friends or colleagues, then personally resolve them—let word spread through their circles until ‘The Fool’ hears of it.”

“It’s also a way to test the Celestial Lord’s surveillance patterns—but we must prepare for the person handling this to be noticed and locked onto, so they should move out temporarily and contact us through more covert means.”

“Hmm, feasible. Let’s try it.”

Lu Mi didn’t immediately assign any team member to carry this out; instead, he turned to Fu Lan Ka:

“You can send out my resume and yours.”

To the Indus Group.

“Alright.” Fu Lan Ka pulled out her phone.

She had already prepared the resumes.

She was applying for an administrative position; Lu Mi for security.

—Of the four, Fu Lan Ka was the only one with standard academic credentials, but her major was too distant from Zhou Mingrui’s to apply for the same department; she could only choose the administration department, where she could frequently interact with Zhou Mingrui.

The other three: Anthony was a retired soldier, Jianna was an art student studying performance, Lu Mi was a high school dropout who had studied martial arts.

It wasn’t that ‘Justice’ Lady didn’t want to forge online-verifiable credentials—it was that even if forged, they’d be exposed during interviews.

They couldn’t answer professional questions, maybe couldn’t even understand them!

Precisely because of this, Fu Lan Ka chose to apply herself rather than let Jianna—technically, an art student studying performance might more easily become an administrative staff member.

After submitting the resumes, Fu Lan Ka looked at Lu Mi with a smiling face:

“There’s good news—can you guess what it is?”

“Stop! Don’t change your eye color!”

Lu Mi thought for a few seconds:

“Did I win the lottery?”

The only thing that could be called good news—and could be mentioned in front of Anthony—was this one thing.

“Guess how much I won?” Fu Lan Ka wasn’t disappointed Lu Mi guessed it right away.

Lu Mi couldn’t help laughing:

“Madam, you bought so many tickets with the same numbers, and I’ve checked the minimum prize for second prize in Double Color Ball—how hard is it to guess how much you won?”

Fu Lan Ka chuckled awkwardly:

“That’s not the point—the point is, didn’t you notice anything strange?”

“When we fought the resurrected corpse, the hidden ‘Puppet Master’ didn’t act; outside Star Dream Convenience Store, someone warned us about tech-side listening devices and pinhole cameras; now, we’ve won over twenty lottery tickets.”

“What’s this called? It’s a force from beyond helping us!”

Jianna, who had already discussed this with Fu Lan Ka, added:

“We think this is a manifestation of ‘The Fool’s’ inner tendency within the dream—symbolic in meaning.”

“He and the Celestial Lord currently have no absolute upper hand—he’s stronger by day, the Celestial Lord by night—but even at night, he’s not completely powerless.”

Lu Mi slowly nodded:

“At the time, I only noticed that particular fate stream was unusual—I didn’t assume it would lead to winning. Perhaps ‘unusual’ itself is fate’s revelation.”

He actually felt Fu Lan Ka and Jianna’s interpretation needed no correction.

“Praise The Fool!” Fu Lan Ka sprang up, pressing her hand to her chest with startling sincerity, bowing.

She then said:

“Who’s going to claim the prize today?”

She had already checked the prize-claiming guide online.

Lu Mi and Jianna turned their gazes toward Anthony simultaneously; Fu Lan Ka did the same.

Sending any of the three “Witches” would require more disguise—Anthony didn’t need it.

Anthony nodded calmly:

“I’ll go.”

By ten a.m., no one on the team encountered anything abnormal; Lu Mi entered the spare bedroom to catch up on sleep.

Fu Lan Ka drove the gray sedan with Jianna, Anthony, and Ludwig, following navigation toward the Dream Metropolis’s lottery center.

As she drove, Fu Lan Ka grew increasingly restless, muttering:

“Why does every intersection have a red light?”

Jianna, in the passenger seat, thought for a moment:

“Could this be a manifestation of the Celestial Lord’s dream tendency—symbolizing our actions won’t go smoothly?”

Fu Lan Ka calmed down, drove more attentively, even using her “Witch”’s intuitive sense to avoid accidents like car crashes en route—no “Road Trip from Hell.”

Due to unlucky traffic lights and congestion, they arrived nearly half an hour late.

Before Fu Lan Ka could hand the ticket to Anthony, she saw a figure leap from the lottery center’s rooftop and crash to the ground with a thud, blood spreading.

“Do I have to be this unlucky? I only won second prize...” Fu Lan Ka was stunned.

Anthony got out voluntarily, blended into the crowd, and asked what had happened.

Soon, Anthony returned to the car and told his two companions what he’d heard:

“The man who jumped was the lottery center’s director. Fifteen minutes ago, anti-corruption officials entered the center.”

“To stop me from claiming my second prize, they sacrificed the director as an offering?” Fu Lan Ka didn’t know what expression to wear.

Undeterred, Fu Lan Ka had Anthony take the ticket into the center and ask about claiming it—only to be told prize claims were suspended for the day, come back tomorrow.

Inside the gray sedan, silence followed; then Fu Lan Ka gritted her teeth:

“I’ve never been this close to a big win—and now they won’t let me claim it!”

“Tomorrow, bring Lu Mi. Maybe we need to influence fate!”

When they returned to the rental, Lu Mi was already awake.

Fu Lan Ka recounted their ordeal, then asked with concern:

“Why are you up before noon? Shouldn’t you sleep more?”

Lu Mi smiled and said:

“I was woken up by a phone call.”

“Oh, you’ve only been on the job a few days and you’re already getting harassing calls?” Franca remarked with practiced familiarity.

Lu Mi shook his head:

“No, it was from the Intis Group—they called to ask me to come in for an interview tomorrow morning.”

“An interview call already?” Franca blurted out in shock.

Why haven’t I gotten one yet?

My resume is clearly much better than Lu Mi’s!

Lu Mi pulled out his phone, unlocked the screen, and handed it to Franca:

“Maybe that’s why.”

Franca took it, puzzled, and looked closely—she saw a news article:

“During last night’s thunderstorm, a sedan was struck by lightning, killing one and injuring three…”

“It is understood that the deceased and injured were all security personnel from the Intis Group…”
