Chapter 4209
Zhang Chongshan shook his head and said, "I wouldn't dare to show off my meager skills in front of you. You created the 'Baozhou Miracle' back in Baozhou, and now that Linshan City is in your hands, you will surely be able to create a 'Linshan Miracle' as well. If we don't work hard, who knows when you might surpass us."
Just as Su Xinghui was about to say something, there was a knock on the dormitory door. Su Xinghui called out, "Please, come in!"
The dormitory door was pushed open, and several middle-aged men with beaming smiles walked in. They introduced themselves; it turned out they were also students attending this short-term training class for municipal party secretaries, all of them powerful regional leaders. Su Xinghui and Zhang Chongshan hurriedly invited them to sit down. Since there weren't enough chairs, they had to sit on the beds.
Among them were Yan Junfeng, the Municipal Party Secretary of Jinxi; Fu Minzhong, the Municipal Party Secretary of Tiandu; Wu Geng, the Municipal Party Secretary of Lingao; and one more who had come from Hudong Province, Bao Chengzhi, the Municipal Party Secretary of Xiangzhou.
There were seven or eight of them in the group, and each one exchanged pleasantries with Su Xinghui and Zhang Chongshan with a beaming smile. Of course, anyone could see that they spoke more to Su Xinghui. This was understandable to everyone; with Su Xinghui's deep background, who wouldn't want to get on good terms with him?
Bao Chengzhi, in particular, said that he and Su Xinghui were fellow townsmen. Furthermore, when Comrade Lu Zhenghong served as the Mayor of Xiangzhou, he had been one of Lu Zhenghong's old subordinates, so he insisted on getting close to Su Xinghui.
In reality, Xiangzhou and Shangjun were hundreds of kilometers apart, and Lu Zhenghong's tenure as Mayor of Xiangzhou had been twenty or thirty years ago. At that time, Bao Chengzhi was just a young man in his early twenties. How could he claim to be one of Lu Zhenghong's old subordinates?
However, since Bao Chengzhi could forge such a connection with Su Xinghui, he naturally wanted to make use of it. Su Xinghui, unfazed, smiled and said that he and Bao Chengzhi were indeed fellow townsmen.
This short-term training class for municipal party secretaries had a total of twenty-eight students. Excluding those who hadn't yet reported, only about a dozen were living on campus; the rest lived off-campus in their own accommodations.
These municipal party secretaries were all powerful regional leaders who were accustomed to a life of luxury. How many of them were used to living in a double room? Living here was also inconvenient in many ways, so more than half of them chose to live off-campus.
Among the dozen or so who stayed, besides Su Xinghui, who genuinely hoped to live on campus for the sake of convenience, the others likely had their own agendas. For instance, Zhang Chongshan and Bao Chengzhi were likely staying on campus to build a relationship with Su Xinghui and have more opportunities to interact with him.
Now that everyone was gathered together, they chatted and laughed, exchanging contact information. Although they valued Su Xinghui more, everyone who could attend this training class was no ordinary person, so this was also a good opportunity to expand their network.
Classmates at the Party School are classmates nonetheless.
Su Xinghui also collected their phone numbers and saved them one by one in his phone book.
Just as he was saving the numbers, his phone rang. He checked the number and saw it was Liao Xiaoyan calling again. He stepped out of the dormitory and answered the phone in the hallway. However, after saying "Hello" a few times, he didn't hear Liao Xiaoyan's response; instead, he heard the sounds of Liao Xiaoyan and other girls giggling.
Su Xinghui guessed that Liao Xiaoyan had accidentally dialed his number. He hung up, but to be safe, he immediately called her back.
After the phone rang a few times, Liao Xiaoyan answered. Her voice was a bit breathless, but she still said cheerfully, "Uncle Su, are you looking for me?"
Su Xinghui asked, "Why did you call me just now?"
Liao Xiaoyan replied, "I didn't call you."
Su Xinghui said, "Your number clearly called me just now, but when I answered, you didn't say anything."
Liao Xiaoyan said, "I don't know... let me check my call logs. Oh, it really did call! Those girls have ruined me; they were messing around with me and must have accidentally hit your number. I'm so sorry, Uncle Su!"
Su Xinghui smiled and said, "It's alright, as long as you're okay."
Liao Xiaoyan asked if he had reported for the class yet. Su Xinghui said he had. They chatted for a few more moments before hanging up.
Su Xinghui entered the dormitory and heard Zhang Chongshan say, "Let's go out for dinner this afternoon. It's my treat."
Yan Junfeng said, "Let me treat instead."
Bao Chengzhi said, "Don't fight me on this. I'm happy to have met Secretary Su, a fellow townsman, here. Today's meal is on me!"
In truth, none of these municipal party secretaries couldn't afford a meal. What they wanted was the opportunity to build relationships with their fellow students. After some bickering, Bao Chengzhi ultimately won the chance.
Bao Chengzhi laughed and said, "I accept your concession. Thank you all for giving me face. The time is about right, shall we head out?"
Everyone stood up and walked outside. Bao Chengzhi called his secretary to book a room, and the other secretaries also called their drivers to pick them up. There were only a dozen people, yet nine cars showed up. Since Su Xinghui hadn't brought a driver, Zhang Chongshan had him ride in his car, as Su Xinghui would be drinking and couldn't drive afterward.
