Chapter 348
349. Chapter 345: Safe and Sound and Alarming and Dangerous
"Allen, come here for a second!"
Erwen poked his head out of the office door and shouted.
Allen, who was chatting with others, trotted over. "What's up?"
Since being promoted to team leader, Allen had become even more fond of working.
Of course, this situation was actually quite normal; after all, going from a member to a team leader was a huge, leapfrog development.
In the past, he always listened to others' orders to do things, but now, others had to listen to his orders.
He could pick some people from a large group of family members to work for him, whether for a long time or just once, which gave him immense power!
One must know that the core interest distribution of the Lansi family was determined by their actual work performance. Without considering other factors, only by doing more work could they earn more money.
Regardless of whether they liked this family, Lansi, Erwen, and everyone else from the bottom of their hearts, earning money was one of their goals!
If they wanted to earn more money, they had to have team leaders and cadres they were familiar with, who would often take them out to work.
Allen had good relationships with these people; he was lively and had no airs, so everyone liked being friends with him. Now that his prospects were even better, they were even more enthusiastic.
When a person found that everyone around them had become good people, they would discover the beauty of this world.
Erwen closed the office door and motioned for him to sit in the chair opposite Lansi.
"Your performance during this period has been excellent, Allen. You've proven that giving you this opportunity to become a team leader was the right decision."
"Now, there is a very special job that needs to be handed to you. It's a bit dangerous, but it will also bring you more glory. You can consider it."
Allen didn't even listen to the content and directly expressed his willingness to take it on. He stood up, looking serious. "Boss, I obey the family's arrangements. Anything at all—handing it to me is definitely the right choice!"
If it weren't for the fact that he was only a small team leader, the words he said would have made him look more like a high-level cadre.
Lansi smiled, raised his hand to signal him to sit down, and then tossed a document in front of him.
"Someone has planted a mole in our gang. Officer Lukaer and the others were brought here by this person. We've found him."
"You know, we never show mercy to those who betray the family, regardless of their motives."
"Allen, kill him, and let the Hazardous Materials Bureau lose face. Do you understand what I mean?"
"They might feel that by planting a mole and obtaining our intelligence, they've dealt us a heavy blow, so we must strike back!"
Allen's expression became slightly serious. He picked up the document, glanced down at it, and immediately closed his eyes and looked away.
He raised his hand to his forehead. "Fuck!"
He knew this person, and their relationship was quite good, or rather, he had good relationships with most people.
In Allen's eyes, this peer was very lively, often handing out cigarettes to everyone, and often treating people to meals to maintain good relationships.
In the past, he thought this might just be the guy's habit, but now that he thought about it, this person seemed to always be asking questions intentionally or unintentionally.
At the time, he even thought this guy was pretty good!
"Fuck!" he cursed again, his heart feeling unsettled.
This kind of thing was just how it was; as long as there was enough contact, it was hard to avoid having a decent friendship, plus the other party's deliberate catering.
Lansi stroked his eyebrows along their contour. "Is it very difficult?"
He regained his composure and took a deep breath. "I have no problem with it."
Lansi nodded. "He's just a mole; he was never on our side from the beginning."
"All the traits he showed were just a facade he created to deceive us, so you don't need to feel any guilt or other psychological burden. Kill him and let the Hazardous Materials Bureau know their plan has failed again. This isn't hard!"
Allen stood up. "I know what to do, Lansi."
He rarely called him by the name "Lansi," only when he was serious and earnest.
Lansi made a "feel free" gesture, signaling he could leave. "I'll wait for your good news."
Allen, who had just come out of the office, immediately saw Beinuo guarding the door. Beinuo looked a bit worried about him. Before the other could speak, Allen squeezed out a smile. "I'm fine, everything is fine!"
Beinuo just looked at him with a "you're lying" expression, which made Allen sigh. "Come outside."
The two walked out the back door into the alley. They lit a cigarette in the corner. "We have a new job; we need to deal with a traitor."
"A traitor?" Beinuo hadn't reacted yet when Allen added, or rather, described the target more accurately: "A mole!"
Almost instinctively, Beinuo's scalp went numb, and the cigarette he was holding fell to the ground.
He reacted quickly, bending down to pick up the cigarette, which allowed him to hide the change in his expression from Allen. In those few seconds of bending down, he readjusted his emotions.
However, there were still many shocked and even faintly fearful expressions on his face, but Allen didn't notice them.
"Yes, a mole." He said a name, which made Beinuo breathe a sigh of relief—it wasn't him.
But he was also a bit curious. "You... how did the company find out he had a problem?"
"Remember the day we went to watch the unloading?" Allen looked quite angry. "It was him who leaked the location of the warehouse. This son of a bitch."
"Lansi said it was him who called to notify the Hazardous Materials Bureau. He might even be in contact with Officer Lukaer; otherwise, they wouldn't have come so quickly!"
At this moment, Beinuo wasn't sure if they had gotten it wrong, because it was he who had called Officer Lukaer that day.
But then he thought about it again; there might not be only one mole. Maybe there were others.
As long as it wasn't him who was exposed, it was fine. At the same time, he felt a trace of fear because this job was too unsafe, and Officer Lukaer... was really too utilitarian!
He could have waited a few days, but he went that very night, which was tantamount to clearly telling Lansi that there was a mole here.
Fortunately, Lansi and the others trusted Allen, and they had also ferreted out another leaker; otherwise, the consequences would have been unimaginable!
"What do you plan to do?" he asked.
Allen had already regulated his emotions. "Make him regret coming into this world!"
He threw the half-smoked cigarette on the ground and stepped on it irritably, sparks flying before it went completely out. "Ask where he is."
Ten minutes later, Allen got the mole's location. He and another person were patrolling the street.
Four people drove over and soon found them on a bench by the side of the road.
"Hey, Allen, look here!"
Seeing Allen appear, the mole waved his arm happily.
Because Allen had no airs and could reach the family's upper echelons, and was also willing to spend money on everyone, everyone liked him quite a bit.
Allen's expression looked a bit unnatural. He squeezed out a smile and got out of the car. "Just in time, I have something for you to do."
He gave Beinuo a look. Beinuo walked over to the mole's partner, put his arm around the other's shoulder in an apparently intimate way, and whispered something.
At this moment, the mole didn't have eyes in the back of his head; otherwise, he would definitely have seen his good partner looking at him with terrified, angry, and incredulous eyes from time to time.
He walked to Allen's side and took the initiative to hand over a cigarette. "Is there anything I need to do?"
He looked very cooperative and even took out a lighter to light Allen's cigarette.
Allen took a deep drag of the cigarette and exhaled slowly. "There's something to be done later, the company ordered it, but we're short a hand, and I thought of you."
The mole had no guard at all. "Great, I've long been bored with patrolling. When are we leaving?"
Allen pursed his lips. "Now."
A minute later, everyone got into the car, and Allen and Beinuo sat in the back seat, with the mole sitting between them.
"Where are we going?" The mole was still lively, completely unaware of what had happened.
Allen glanced at him. "You'll know when we get there."
Perhaps sensing that Allen was in a bad mood, the mole didn't continue to chatter and just remained calm.
The car kept heading out of the city. Seeing the scenery of the suburbs, the mole finally became a bit uneasy. "Where are we going? Jinxing City?"
"We'll be there soon." Allen brushed him off and then asked, "What do you think of Lansi and the others?"
The mole became increasingly uneasy. "I don't know what you mean."
Allen looked straight at him. "I mean, what do you think of Lansi, Erwen, Morisi, Hailamu... these people, how are they to us?"
The mole was silent for a while. "They're pretty good to us."
"Yeah, pretty good!" Allen sighed heavily. "He gave us a lot of money, gave us decent lives that earn respect, gave us everything we couldn't get on the docks or elsewhere."
"Honestly, I'm honored to know them, to be able to join the Lansi family. This place is like a real family; we're all family members, just like real brothers and sisters!"
"This is a very novel experience. I've never had so many brothers and sisters. We're together every day, doing the same things, happy, sad, or whatever else."
The car's speed slowed down gradually. A small wooden house appeared not far away.
The mole was already sweating. He didn't know what this place was, but the things Allen said were too scary!
He swallowed his saliva, opening his mouth to say something, but didn't know how to say it or what to say.
The car stopped steadily. Allen got out of the car and looked at the mole. "Lansi told me we aren't on the same side because you joined the family with a purpose. Why did you do that?"
The expression on the mole's face began to turn terrified, his voice sounding a bit off-key. "I didn't!"
Beinuo suddenly punched him from behind, grabbed his hair, and dragged him out of the car.
There were four people around; the mole didn't dare to run because he knew the family's rules—as long as they were on a mission, the team leader definitely carried a gun.
He couldn't outrun a bullet, and there were four people here!
He begged bitterly while shouting, "I really didn't leak any family intelligence! Let me talk to Lansi; I've been wronged!"
Allen rubbed his face and signaled Beinuo to send him into the room.
There was a chair in the room. He was tied to the chair. Allen looked at him, his expression a bit complicated. "Say something we're interested in, and I can give you a quick end."
"Even though you lied to us!"
Death is always the unknown that people fear most. People don't know what will happen after death, so they fear it because of the unknown!
He cried bitterly and begged, but Allen remained unmoved. He looked very soft-hearted, but the softer he looked, the angrier he actually was at this moment!
He walked to the wall, took down a steel rod, turned around, and stabbed it into the mole's thigh!
"Why?!"
"Why did you betray us?!"
He didn't look like he usually did, especially the him from just a moment ago!
His expression was a bit ferocious, his face flushed, and his hand, tightly gripping the steel rod, twisted it. The mole's wound, because of being pierced and torn, made him howl in pain!
He was much more fragile than he had imagined himself to be. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry, Allen, it's all my fault, spare me!"
Allen looked at him and let go. He lit a cigarette. "How do you pass information out every time?"
The mole could only tell the truth; he didn't want to die, and he was afraid of pain!
"I write the intelligence on the newspaper and then pass the information by placing the newspaper on a designated bench..."
Every time he obtained intelligence, he would record it and then write a "code" based on the words reported in the newspaper.
For example, if the first word of the first sentence of the first headline on the first page was "we," then that would be four "1s."
If someone who didn't know this decryption method saw the newspaper, they would only see a string of meaningless numbers in the corner of the paper.
He had used this method to pass information many times, and he thought no one felt he had a problem.
Plus, his main job was patrolling the streets; sometimes it was normal to carry a newspaper when he was bored.
Allen was just about to ask who he was passing the information to when Beinuo suddenly walked over and punched the mole in the lower abdomen, just as angry as Allen. "You son of a bitch, we trusted you so much, and you betrayed us?"
Allen was a bit surprised, but soon began to soothe Beinuo. "I'm just as angry as you, but now we have to figure out some problems first."
Beinuo nodded. "Was the intelligence about the warehouse unloading leaked by you?" Before the mole could answer, he shouted loudly, "Don't quibble, we already have evidence!"
Although what he asked wasn't what Allen had intended to ask just now, it wasn't wrong either, so he didn't say anything and just watched from the side.
The mole nodded. "Yes, I leaked it..."
"Fuck!" Beinuo punched him a few more times as if he were truly angry to the extreme, before being pulled away by Allen.
He panted slightly. "What good did it do you to bring Officer Lukaer and the others from the Hazardous Materials Bureau over?"
"What did they promise you that made you willing to do this for them?!"
This question, strictly speaking, was equivalent to announcing the answer. The mole, in a state of panic and unease, now followed his words down subconsciously.
"They promised that after Lansi and the others were arrested, they would let me work in the Hazardous Materials Bureau..."
He said quite a few things, but didn't touch upon the most critical question: who was his superior!
Beinuo used a method of swapping concepts to make everyone think his superior was Officer Lukaer, and then stopped mentioning anything related to that.
He didn't say too much valuable information, and he didn't know enough about the operations within the Hazardous Materials Bureau; he simply thought that after this job was finished, he could enter the Hazardous Materials Bureau.
Although sometimes he would have feelings of guilt, he had no way back; once he embarked on the path of being a mole, there was no chance to turn back!
When the last question ended, Allen seemed to have completely calmed down.
"Please, help me bandage the wound, for the sake of my cooperation... and the fact that we were brothers before!"
"It's been bleeding the whole time, I'm going to die!" The mole looked at them and begged with tears in his eyes. The wound on his thigh, which had been pierced, was still bleeding and wouldn't stop.
Allen looked at him. Although his emotions had calmed down, hearing him say the word "brother" still made him feel angry!
He walked two steps closer and pointed at his nose. "Don't defile the word 'brother'; you aren't worthy of being our brother!"
He paused. "Actually, you know it; today we brought you here, and you have no chance of leaving alive."
"For the sake of your cooperation, the only thing I can give you is a quick end!"
He suddenly looked at Beinuo. "You hate him so much; the chance to kill him is yours."
Beinuo was a bit nervous at first, but what followed was a sigh of relief. "Good, this is best!"
He said, pulling out a dagger, and walked in front of the mole amidst his bitter crying. His lips moved slightly, and he said "I'm sorry," but only he could hear those words.
Ignoring the mole's begging, he stabbed the dagger into the other's heart, and the blood quickly drained the strength and life from his body.
In less than thirty seconds, he lost all signs of life.
They carved the word "mole" on his corpse, then did some processing—wounds, severed limbs—and handled it according to the family's methods, waiting.
The smell of blood in the room made Allen a bit uncomfortable. He didn't know if it was the smell of blood in the wooden house or some change in his emotions. He leaned against the car, lit a cigarette, and gazed at the setting sun.
His whole person looked very sorrowful.
Beinuo came to his side after washing his hands, asked for a cigarette, and the two leaned against the car body side by side. Neither spoke, just staring at the sunset.
The fiery red evening glow fell on them, illuminating them in red.
Just as fresh as blood, just as bright.
