Both stayed silent on the way; Li Xuewu focused solely on pedaling, while Gu Ning clutched the hem of his coat tightly.

The night was dark; though Li Xuewu’s bike had a lamp, unavoidable potholes and bumps still came.

Li Xuewu’s speed varied—sometimes fast, sometimes slow—and Gu Ning, seated behind, brushed against his back a few times.

Whether from fear of falling off or fear of bumping into him again, Gu Ning placed her hands on Li Xuewu’s waist and gripped his coat tightly.

Li Xuewu noticed and said to her: “Put your hands in my coat pocket—otherwise they’ll freeze.”

Gu Ning hesitated, then—perhaps truly cold—slid her hands into his coat pocket.

Only then did she feel warmth, but their bodies were now pressed close; she felt the intimacy and wanted to pull her hands away.

At that moment, Li Xuewu, sensing her hands inside his pocket, suddenly accelerated, eager to ride faster.

Startled by the jolt, Gu Ning’s still-inserted hands clamped tightly around his waist, her face pressing against his back.
